  1. That seems about right, though if I were paying that much, I'd want cleaner labels than those.
  2. Embryo are hit-or-miss, certainly. What I've heard with Mariano has been live concert recordings, which didn't faze me as much as some of the stuff they recorded without him in North Africa, Turkey, and the Near East - ethnic shit with troupes of local musicians. Embryo's Reise, for example. There's also one hell of a 2LP set that comes enclosed in a cardboard box, and was for a time available by mail order through the band. It's phenomenal, but not so easy to get these days... Surfin' is not so great, though. Some of their work, ironically, reminds me a bit of the Don Cherry ethno-jazz material, which fernando may get a kick out of... Organic Music, Ankara, Blue Lake, even the orchestral shit. Soft Machine are a good call, but I'd steer more in the direction of Five than Six. Just my personal preference, though - it's more "free fusion" than anything I guess.
  3. ICP 006 - Groupcomposing - Mengelberg, Bennink, Brotzmann, Parker, P. Bennink, Rutherford, Bailey! Nice to have some all-over activity while posting -erm- writing...
  4. Ray Russell's Rites and Rituals is a heavy side, "fusion" or however you want to classify it... a lot of his material is pretty mind-bending free jazz/noise rock gloop that's somewhat hard to classify. It's great, though! I'd like to check some of that OM material on Japo as well, so thanks for the reminder. What about Embryo and their work with Charlie Mariano?
  5. I'm not a huge fan of organ jazz, but Think! is something that has been on my BN LP wish-list for some time. The AOTW I've passed by a number of times, but maybe I'll nab both of them the next time I see 'em.
  6. Hiroshi Tanno Reasonable prices on many of what you seek...
  7. Just finished with a bout of solo Cecil: Cecil Taylor Solo (Trio Japan) Indent (Unit Core) Which also means that I made it through the first two layers of "Indent" in one sitting! Such a beautiful piece, too...
  8. Considering how fucked-up their thinking was (and still is) on the Sam Rivers material... I wouldn't hold your breath. But if it means scuttling another groover, I'm all for trying!
  9. I failed - bad - when I sold that Thelonious Monk for considerably less to Fred Cohen at the Jazz Record Center several years ago Yeah - that Monk has gone for nearly that much for quite some time, too!
  10. Alex von Schlippenbach - Globe Unity- (MPS France, not that I mind...) and what a band, indeed! AVS, Schoof, Brotzmann, Hampel, Berger, Dudek, Breuker, Neibergall, Kowald, Liebezeit, Neumeier, and even the great Dutch altoist Kris Wanders (plus a few other left-field weirdos)!
  11. Is she related to Jackie?
  12. Are they doing a Conn of Natural Essence? I have the LP but would, of course, buy the CD to get some insane extra material...
  13. Yes, daaahhling! I believe we can!
  14. What about the "avant-garde train wreck?" I'm still waiting for that one, even a bootleg.
  15. Dudu and Hugh? Odd, but believable - I might be able to conceive of Dudu as sort of an Afro-pop version of Robin Kenyatta, sort of a parallel existence as free jazz hatchet-man and a crossover sensibility in spades. But then, I've skipped on Kenyatta's work after the ECM record, as well as a lot of Dudu's non-BOB-related work. Just playing the disinterested card here, but I could be swayed the other direction with some mega props!
  16. I've never heard that claim, but it's possible. From what I remember of the record, it's got a strong "calypso" vibe to at least a few tracks, and I've passed on it for as little bread as $40. But... there are some interesting characters on it, at least, wherever it is on the Britjazz continuum. Now, the Garrick reish and the upcoming Japanese MPS CD of Decipher (Taylor/Laurence/Levin) get my undies in a bunch!
  17. One of the best movies I've seen in years, Brokeback. But there is another thread over in the Politics Forum, if you really wanna know...
  18. Prince Lasha and Sonny Simmons - Firebirds - Contemporary yellow-label stereo, and a classic!
  19. How's that Gregorio? Not one of UMS's big-sellers, but the idea of Argentinian Fluxus is indeed intriguing.
  20. Shit, most of my record collection is stored with my parents while I'm in Austin...
  21. We believe you! Only really spent much time with Astral Weeks.
  22. I haven't heard it adopted - but would sure like to hear an example if it exists...
  23. I don't think Concord is really selling this to "us" anyway. Sure, if you're lucky enough to have a SO who could make a compilation with, like, Sunny Murray's rendition of "This Nearly Was Mine" (great!!!) or something, then it's unnecessary to buy these things. And yeah, most people don't really move on to the entire Miles Prestige collection after buying a PFL. But at least it's getting some good music out there - nothing on these collections is bad stuff, it's just not what we would choose. That's different. I bought my (now ex-) girlfriend Destination Out because I knew she would enjoy "Love and Hate," and that was the first of several jazz CDs she got in her collection. But the music on that Jackie Mc record is no better or worse than Coltrane's Ballads or even Brubeck and Desmond gettin' mellow. Yeah, I'd rather fuck to Archie Shepp, but that's me... just don't try and fuck to Trevor Watts. Trust me, it doesn't work.
  24. I prefer liquor in my punch bowl, so if anybody can provide that, maybe we'll all enjoy Pavone's playing a little better! He's not the first person I think of in terms of contemporary bassist-composers (Barry Guy or Mark Dresser...), but he's still done some nice work. Shodo, which AFAIK is not on CD, is a very strong recording.
  25. I don't know if I agree with that entirely - there are surface similarities, but like Monk, he is damn near impossible to imitate. I fail to see, for example, motivic similarities between Cecil and say, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Irene Schweizer or Matthew Shipp (admitting not as much familiarity with Shipp as with the others). Not just in terms of solos, either, but the way Cecil would feed structural fragments to Jimmy or Ramsey Ameen or Cyrille or Oxley is quite different than a lot of these other players work. But that's probably for another thread , I'd still like to see this film even though I don't have Comcast.
