Right -- Joe Henderson's Page One is not my favorite of his records, but it's got some enduring compositions and it was one of the first jazz albums I bought, so I have a soft spot for it.

Sad news to report from the Hudson Valley: vibraphonist, pianist, author, and Creative Music Studio founder Karl Berger has passed at age 88. Saw him quite a number of times over the years with various ensembles, both up here and down in NYC. Nice man and a generous spirit -- we had a very engaging phone conversation many years ago when I was working on a Don Cherry article. Condolences to his wife, Ingrid (vocalist and CMS co-founder), family, and many friends and collaborators. RIP sir, and thank you.

got it. Yeah, the Murray has quite a bit of extra material, I think -- have the full concert somewhere in addition to the LP release. I don't have the Christmann, but should get it.

Both this and the Mitchell are superb. Not sure if they ever ended up on CD (too lazy to look). Isolation is great. Tenor, bass clarinet, and corn-pipe I believe. The passage with him overblowing on that instrument is nuts!

Journey to the Song Within is one of my favorite Galaxie Dream Band LPs.

Yes, that is an excellent LP. Have the Danish Steeplechase version.

Sad news -- excellent musician indeed. Swinging Macedonia is a favorite, of course, as is It's About Blues Time. Bobby Jones, yeah, not sure if it was lung cancer or emphysema but something of that sort took him too early. Fantastic saxophonist.

Kidd was great -- a kind man, generous spirit, and hell of a saxophone player. I saw him play many times in New York, Chicago, and Texas. One Texas situation also involved Kidd leading workshops with a class of children (maybe junior high?) and I watched him explore scales with the students and talk about developing sound through practice and rigor. He was very much no-bullshit, like, I couldn't imagine any youngsters getting away with inappropriate behavior, but he was obviously a great teacher. And then of course he proceeded to blow the roof off that night in Houston. RIP Kidd, and thank you.

Urge is the shit. Haven't dug out my vinyl copy in a few years or more. Need to do that again.

I've had that duo on LP, and one needs to have a super crisp copy to ensure that the dynamics are there and the quiet parts aren't full of crackle. I have a rip from a CD and that'll do until a NM++ copy lands in my lap!

Yeah, I passed on Rhapsody and Exchange (with Haruna Miyake). Maybe that's my mistake but if I'm going to dive into solo or duo 20th century recitals by Japanese pianists, there are other interpreters I'd listen to first. Speaking of piano duos, the Satoh-Takahashi duo on Columbia is pretty cool.

Killer one. I like the Decoding Society LPs on Moers and About Time. The recording quality varies but musically they're all super.
