Agree would have like to have more on Melvin Sparks but I also really enjoyed the Richard Evans piece. Looking forward to reading the ones on Creed Taylor and Harold Tapscott. I don't pick up every issue but its a high quality magazine, the paper, the graphics etc.. They have a niche target audience and I think they treat them very well. The bad thing for my wallet anyways is that I now want to track down records by people I have never heard of before like Dorothy Ashby, Lymand Woodard and Stonephace.

While I don't think there will be any big upsets in this round like the Lakers or Cav's losing the Rockets and Hawks will put up more of a fight. Both series will be fun to watch. The Hawks are entertaining already so with LeBron it will be a good one. Lets see which Ron Artest shows up? The one that was talking trash to Kobe as Kobe was lighting him up earlier this year may want to stay home.

Recent Down Loads And Additions From E - Music

Lost in the shuffle of the all other new stuff hitting emusic I just noticed that the Pirouet label is back with the Marc Copeland's. I was bummed last year when it went away. -
I will be near Foligno (Umbria) at the beginning of June when the Enrico Rava Special Edition plays. Does anybody have any info on the rest of this band? ENRICO RAVA SPECIAL EDITION Enrico Rava (trumpet) Mauro Ottolini (trombone - tuba) Daniele Tittarelli (alto sax) Dan Kinzelman (tenor sax) Giovanni Guidi (piano) Claudio Quartarone (guitar) Stefano Senni (double bass) Zeno De Rossi (drums) I think some of them play with Gianluca Petrella's band but I am not sure. Thinking of booking a room there that day so I can catch the show. Looks like a cool venue

Hey Dan, Sorry I didn't get to post my answers, it was a combination of too much work at work, too much new music which I haven't been able to get to and other life stuff (putting aside time for just listing has been tough the last few weeks) so I didn't get to post my usual "I have no clue, but it reminds me of" which usually winds up not even being close. I did have notes going when I was able to listen to this and while I had no clue of the song or album I did guess correctly that it was Baby Face Willette on Track 3 (I recognized his organ touch instantly) and Freddie Roach on track #7 which I own. I was really hopping you would put up the Baby Face Willette song that you had mentioned before so I am grateful that I got to hear it and get to own it, at least in mp3 form. I also loved the Otis Rush and Junior Parker tracks but guessed completely wrong. How could I miss Otis Rush? I know its not the point of the BFT but if its a small consolation looking at the list of tracks I am even more interested in giving its deserved attention, again it was more bad timing on my part then that there was anything wrong with your BFT.

Dylan has a new album out soon, "Together through Life"

Wasn't planning on watching it. I got the deluxe just for the Theme Time Radio Hour disc which I enjoyed immensely. Plus with the sale on it, it was the same price as a single cd. -
Clearing Our Streams - Alex Cline - Continuation. This track and record blew me away this week.

One spin through, sort of half listening, while the song structures are pretty basic it has a cool breezy sound, in addition to the Guitars I love the Accordion on it. Again, I haven't spent much time with it but so far the first song and the second half stood out. Am I crazy or on on a couple songs his voice actually sounds pretty good? -
The only other Bio on Mingus is the one by Brian Priestly titled "Mingus: A Critical Biography". Its a pretty good resource with some good theory breakdown, quotes and antidotes. The discography is extremely thorough, however the writing is awkward/dry at times and the book is short at 230 pages. Worth checking out but I think the definitive bio on the man is still waiting to be written.

New Freddie Hubbard coming out on Blue Note
WorldB3 replied to ghost of miles's topic in New Releases
I guess since they had such good success with the Monk/Coltrane at Carnigie and Mingus at Cornell might as well keep going with the ugly covers because the music is so great. I guess I would say this cover is the best out of three. -
Objection. We earned this. And believe me, the real fans understand how precious, and likely short-lived, this is. Well I would hope so, you have to be both very good and lucky to win a championship. But I can't recall in my lifetime where Boston didn't have at least one team in the post season between basketball, baseball and football in any given year and I am 40. Meanwhile, over in loser land in the bay area the Giants blogs are blowing up because their closer Twittered form a night club in Arizona at 1 am in the morning, which is fine except that he blew a 3 run lead in the 9th and the Giants lost the game later that same Sunday.

Rays had the same record at this time last year, too early to get to up or down on your team. Red Sox are doing what was projected however, I will be rooting for the field vs the Red Sox. Boston fans are the most spoiled in all of sports.

the only two times I have seen him were both Miles Tributes. One right after Miles passed with the remaining members of the Miles Quintet and he sounded great. The last time was last year with the Miles From India product and while he sounded good the leather jacket and sunglasses holding the trumpet just so bit came off a bit Vegas Elvis/Miles impersonator so I think he brings that on himself. I kind of think the whole Miles From India project was just to make money so, bottom line he got paid and he entertained. If your looking for a young trumpet player doing a fresh take on the Miles 60's quintet vibe check out Jeremy Pelt and his excellent record from last year titled November.

Mulatu Astatke _ The Heliocentrics - Inspiration Information 3 (Great!, more of a modern take on his work but well worth it if you love Ethiopiques, Vol. 4) Alex Cline - Continuation (album of the year so far) Mississippi Fred McDowell - Best of Al Green - Im Still In Love With You, Call Me -
I just grabbed this off emusic and I also highly recommend it. In fact its amazing, if something comes out this year that I like better it will be a great year. Thanks Bill, without your post I would have missed it, hopefully it will get the press it deserves so others will get the chance to experience it also.

I would like to welcome all struggling teams to come to Oakland where your hosts will have the distinction of being too old, slow and completely lacking in the hitting and defense department with the added benefit of having a pitching staff that is too young and inexperienced. There won't be any fans to watch you sweep but hey a win is a win. Maybe when they are done with the movie Billy Ball, Brad Pitt can just stay in as a permanent replacement as Beane. At least it might be fun to go have a drink with Angelina and look at her instead of the crap that is on the field.

Its a good one, I think you will really like it. He has a new one coming out next month called Kind Of Brown. It's a return to him leading a straight ahead Jazz band, I have the advance and it sounds good so far, I have only given it one listen. If you looking for something new with him on that is a slam dunk it I highly recommend the record Watts by Jeff "Tain" Watts, Terence Blanchard, Branford Marsalis, and Christian McBride. The swing/grooves on it is ridiculous. More than lives up the hype.

hard to top that one. my pick: Egberto Gismonti - 1. Dança Das Cabeças - Part 1

There is a nice remastered compilation of the studio sides with Ron Carter and Tony Williams titled Objects Appear Closer. I would grab that and the live at the Village Vanguard sides.

you know you suck when you can't even get the name right on your jersey

Before we get carried away regarding the new Yankees stadium also in the top four on the list for most home runs hit in opening week at a new ball park is Pac Bell Park. Aside from being a useless stat we all know where the Giants play is not a band box. I thank as soon as pitchers know where the safe places to pitch to are it will be fine.

While the posts regarding education, gigs, mentoring ect are all true I think it also depends on how much time you want to spend absorbing the new stuff. I try and support/listen the best I can by at least getting a few records and attending shows of some of the newer well-known players. While I may not have that instant recognition of say a Monk, Trane, Bill Evans, Wes or Grant Green but I can for the most part not mistake Chris Potter for Josh Redman, Sefano Bollani for a Brad Mehldau or Jason Moran or Kurt Rosesnwinkle for a Adam Rogers or Steve Cardinas. I can’t speak for everybody coming up and the lack of their individuality but for the people I am familiar with that are considered the new and notable I have no trouble differentiating them from each other.
