.... if you know a five ounce bird could not carry a one pound coconut and to maintain air-speed velocity, a swallow needs to beat its wings forty-three times every second, unless its an african swallow. I grew up a latch key baby and spent one summer where I think I watched the Holy Grail 20 times. Back when Showtime first premiered in the 80's on cable I think the only programing they had was the Holy Grail, Blazing Saddles, Hannah And Her Sisters and the Jazzercize exercise show. hmmm.. -

bumping this tread to recommend: What a wonderful surprise, wasn't expecting a swinging/Brazilian/Marimba based record with great acoustic guitar playing on it. I think everybody who reads this thread with an emusic account would love this. I can't stop listening to it. -
Fed for sure will win another US Open, its almost a home court for him at this point. Its crazy how fast Nadal has improved all areas of his game. Its been awhile since Tennis has has two players with such complete games and an aura of greatness. Agassi and Samprass were amazing but these two guys for some reason are more fun to watch and root for.

Reg: Yeah. All right. I'll grant you the aqueduct and the sanitation are two things that the Romans have done. Matthias: And the roads. Reg: Well, yeah. Obviously the roads. I mean, the roads go without saying, don't they? But apart from the sanitation, the aqueduct, and the roads-- Commando: Irrigation. Xerxes: Medicine. Commandos: Huh? Heh? Huh... Commando 2: Education. Commandos: Ohh... Reg: Yeah, yeah. All right. Fair enough. Commando 1: And the wine. Commandos: Oh, yes. Yeah... Francis: Yeah. Yeah, that's something we'd really miss, Reg, if the Romans left. Huh. Commando: Public baths. Loretta: And it's safe to walk in the streets at night now, Reg. Francis: Yeah, they certainly know how to keep order. Let's face it. They're the only ones who could in a place like this. Commandos: Hehh, heh. Heh heh heh heh heh heh heh. Reg: But apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh-water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us? Xerxes: Brought peace? Reg: Oh, peace? Shut up -
Nice article on Fed and the open in the local rag. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?.../SPJB15LKUM.DTL "God, this is killing me," said Federer, who then began sobbing, and he could not stop. True enough, he had been physically outplayed by Nadal, whose elements of desire and endurance border on the supernatural. But now, Federer's mind was blank. He seemed to sense that his reign is over, that a 14th major title (Pete Sampras' record) seems somehow unattainable, that Nadal (at 22) is five years younger and improving his game in every respect, that Sunday's fifth set was a lamentable mismatch, that things will get only worse at the next Grand Slam stop, the clay courts of Paris. "Let's be honest, the guy (Nadal) is in his head," broadcaster Patrick McEnroe said after Sunday's match. "Roger basically folded in that fifth set, couldn't handle the pressure. It's going to be difficult for him to come back from this, and he definitely needs a coach. He's never had to adjust to something, because he's been so talented he could go out there and figure it out. All of a sudden, there's a guy he can't do that against."

I don't think you can have asked for a better game. Overall it was better than last years where the first half was a dud, not that I don't like a good defensive game but game didn't really define itself until the fourth quarter, this one had a lot of twists and turns through out. The game winning TD pass to Holmes was a thing of beauty and perfection. Even better than Montana to Taylor, and this coming from a huge Niner fan. After so many years of boring Super Bowls were are lucky to have back to back great ones.

While I don't think this applies to most of the Trio recordings with Jarrett I can feel where your coming from and every artist should live by those words. However I don't I think Jarrett is always coming from this angle but that a lot of his fan base tends to over intellectualize his work, for years I associated him with the bierkenstock smoking jacket types, don't get me started on what I thought of deadheads (funny that I become one). I think you pointed it out perfectly with this in regards to Chris Potter and how until his Underground band came out why his records disappointed when it was obvious that he had tons of talent. Good post and points as always.

I said it before but I will say it again, the sequence of going to the 8th deuce in the 4 set when it was 2-2 was epic. Just because it didn't have the great finish like 08 Wimbleton didn't mean it wasn't a great match. Won't happen but if Fed can win the French vs Nadal....

I woke up at 3:30 for some reason last night and I thought hey the tennis game is on. Saw the 3rd set tie break, glad I was up for the 2-2 break point back and forth in fourth set which was epic. Some of the best tennis I have ever seen in my life. These two guys never cease to amaze me.

The Jarrett vinyl I ordered is back ordered, not sure why I guess ECM wasn't anticipating the demand for new vinyl releasees. Luckily the Rava on CD came right on time and I have to say its great. Deceptive though. The first song could be on the last two Rava records but then we get an improve number on track two and then track three gets a little free. If your expecting a sedate ECM session you will be nicely surprised how it at times it moves away from that. While there was certianly nothing wrong with his last record the Words and The Days this record has lot more push/pull/free improve and tension to it. Mark Turner plays Wayne Shorter to Rava's Miles Davis at times with the way his lines follow Rava's. Grenadier and Motian are great and Bollani well, you have to hear for yourself, as always he seems to bring the best out of Enrico Rava. Wonderful record.

Good points, at first I was agreed with Allen, I totally get what he is saying on that. But listening to the ECM touchstone release of Look Out For Hope which is from the early 80's its evident that Frisell just didn't decide to do country with the Willies and Nashville in the 90s with the soul purpose of being a NPR darling, his own brand of adding elements of Country in a Jazz fashion is evident way back then. While I understand the cry's of sell out if your fan of the John Zorn and early Paul Motain Trio recordings on Black Saint he hasn't changed all that much. Sure he has mellowed off the heavy over drive pedal but he for the most part he has stayed true to his vision. It took me awhile but getting to go back to his early work with his 80's ECM stuff and the Paul Motian trio on emusic I now get BF and really appreciate his work. I already loved him just for his work on Angel Song and I Have The Room Upstairs.

Didn't we go through all this in the 70"s? The big 3 fought against having to put seat belts in cars, why would they compromise on emission standards. I hate to see people lose jobs but enough with their bs. -
That's sad, so young at 60 though he did live a rough life for while. Solid Air and Live At Leeds were two of my favorite records. A little mix of Jazz, Folk, Blues with some World stylings in there and more. "love is a lesson to learn in our time won't you please won't please won't you bear in mind for me may you never lay your head down without a hand to hold may you never make your bed out in the cold"

wow, no mention of the Baby Face Willette version with Grant Green. Its been OOP for awhile, the new RVG will be worth picking up. Great session.

And I'll have to agree with him. Of course, when it comes to Sandberg, he can kiss my ass... I kind of agree, the Hall should be for the greats, Sandberg was borderline great. Hard work and consistency should be rewarded but where do you dtaw the line, you might as well let Fred McGriff and Harold Baines in to the Hall.

Make sure to check out the Quest by Mal Waldron (same band for the most part with Dolphy) and The Seagulls Of Kristiansund, Mal’s other great band. -
Ladies and Gentlemen the Grateful Dead (live 71 with Pig Pen) Europe 72 Dicks Picks 1,14, 19 (from my favorite year the jazzy1973) Dicks Picks 12, Grateful Dead Movie (can’t beat 74) Dicks Picks 3 (77, considered by some to be their best year) Dicks Picks 5, Reckoning (add a little Brent to the mix form 79 and as stated already the acoustic Reckoning from 80 is a must have) I don’t own it but the So Many Roads Box set is a nice overview of live material, plus my friend wrote the liner notes.

The retirement of Jeff Kent brings up some interesting thoughts on HOF voting. For the most part Kent was considered clean (I am not sure myself, but that’s just my opinion) but even so his stats benefited greatly from steroids. His best years and the ones that should/will get him into Cooperstown were with the Giants and hitting in front of or behind Bonds. How many down the middle fastballs did he get so he wouldn’t get walked in front of Bonds? How many more RBI opportunities did he have because Bonds was always walked in front of him? To Kent’s credit he delivered when the opportunity was there but its an example that I hope writers take the steroids arguments out of it when looking at players that played in the steroids era.

What's it like? Johnson and Baron are a mean team. I've listened to this record only one time so far, but what I've heard so far is another extraordinary recording of this group. ooh.. will grab that as soon as I refresh. I loved the Live In Japan release by this trio I just downloaded the two live Village Vanguard Mal Waldron Quintet recordings with Rouse,Shaw, Workman and Blackwell. The Get Go and The Seagulls Of Kristiansund. Amazing. -
Well it would be crazy to fire a coach and get rid of a QB that brought you to the NFC Championship game but I at the same time ( I say this not as an Eagles fan) it has to feel like the team under achieved all year. I think Philly fans are in their right to put pressure on ownership to make changes. The Steelers secondary is one of the best I have ever seen, I think the SB will be a blowout but I said the Cardinals would get blown out against the Panthers and Eagles and I was wrong, good thing I don't bet on sports anymore.

I lived in SF during that quake but I have to say I am pretty offended that you think it only affected people in SF, there was massive damage in Oakland and all the way down to where I grew up in Santa Cruz.
-
The earthquake happened BEFORE Game 3. The A's won the first 2 games by a combined score of 10-1. Now I'll grant you that many teams have come back 0-2 in a series. But you said the Giants were peaking before the series. Yet they dropped the 1st 2 games of the series. I think it's safe to say that they were no longer peaking. And finally the last 2 games were played at Candlestick. You have a fascinating ability to reinvent history. Sometimes Giants fans come up with the argument that the A's threw their #1 and 2 starters twice in that series in Dave Stewart and Mike Moore but forget that Bob Welch won 17 games with a 3.00 ERA and Strom Davis won 19 (era low 4's) though he benefited by being on a great team. The Giants had Robinson, Garrelts, Reuschel and LaCoss. The starting lineups between the two were no contest as the A's were loaded 1-9 even though Will Clark and Kevin Mitchell were two of my all time favorite players. The A's should have won 3 world series during that time, not just the one in 89. Of course now if the A's came even close to getting to the World Series I would be happy.
