  1. More hype than substance. Overall, it's ok, with disc 2 being much better than disc 1. The problem for me is that the music does not have any "sustained heat". That and the fact that I'm not crazy about McBride's electric bass playing. FWIW, I believe that the Return to Forever reunion is a much better listen. Oh well. Corea is still a standout musician, but, and I hate to say this, McLaughlin may be on a steep downward spiral, especially considering his last few solo releases. Thanks for this, they are playing in the bay area and it looked like it was too good to be true but on the other hand it also feels like a money project. I haven't heard it but I think I will pass on the live show as McLaughlin hasn't been his self in recent years and for what ever reason McBride's electric bass playing disappoints. Mostly due to how much I love his acoustic stand up bass playing.
  2. Will Bernard John Medeski Andy Hess Stanton Moore Friday, March 20, 8PM Great American Music Hall Will was a local bay area kid I have been following for years and I get the bonus of seeing Medeski and Moore in a small venue. Looking forward to it. It's also one of those shows where I can get some friends to go with me. For so many jazz shows I find myself going alone.
  3. Will you post again when it hits the newsstands so I remember to go get one. I buy it on occasion but only when the content ratio is more on the Jazz side or artists I am familiar with as its on the expensive side. The Sly Stone, Jimmy Clif and Ahmad Jamal issue was a good one.
  4. I checked again, and the game is listed, I must have passed over it. Sweet, it should be a nice game to watch. I don't get it in my area via Comcast unless I want to pay and extra 160.00 for the year and its not even in HD. I hate Comcast.
  5. Cool, After giving Apti a few spins over the last couple weeks and based on the reviews here I think I will grab Kinsman.
  6. A good starting point for the later years would be the compilation "The Original Jam Master Ain't It Funky Now Vol 1". People can rip on the album Carryin On all they want but you won't find a better solo then the one on Ease Back or a better grove than I Don't Want Nobody to Give Me Nothing which are both on the comp along with a great live version of Its Your Thing. The problem with the later stuff isn't so much Grant but the band and the tunes were not up to the earlier stuff. However when Grant is soloing over a Idris Muhammad drum beat like on the live album "Live at Club Mozambique" all is right in my world. The organist Ronnie Foster is pretty good on that one also.
  7. I saw the term a couple years ago, basically what I get is its a term for people that have a taste for more underground hip hop acts with a lighter style of rap, more up beat. In addition to the Roots, groups like Blackalicious, Black Star, De La Soul, Jurasic 5, Mos Def, Pharcide. I would say my taste in hop hop would make me a "backpacker". Originally it was a slang term from the 1980s for a graffiti artist who always wore a backpack containing his music collection.
  8. I rarely listen to hip hop anymore (in fact never these days) but I use to absolutely love the Roots. My recommendations would be: For the early stripped down "backpacker" stuff: Do You Want More. For the more Miles fusion based jams and funky popish songs: Phrenolgy. For a heavy current events based tunes (like Funkadelic) and great production: Game Theory. The critics pick for the neo soul elements is Things Fall Apart. My two personal favorites are Do You Want More and Game Theory.
  9. Get the box set. It's pretty cheap if you order from Cadillac direct. http://www.cadillacjazz.co.uk/index.html Edit: Actually... do you have "Very Urgent" ?? I would get that first. I'll check that out, thanks.
  10. Are there any albums/ compilations he did with the Blue Notes that someone can recommend that are still in print?. Chris McGregor has been on my to check out list for a while.
  11. interesting, thanks for the link. He was one of my all time favorite writers, I was bummed out for weeks after his passing. Such a tragic loss.
  12. Any update on when the vinyl will be out?

    Ralph Towner

Happy B-Day Mr. Towner! Not that I need one, but its a great excuse to spin Batik and Solstice today.
  15. Chris, I am sure you know but your mentioned on page 14 in Joe Boyd's book White Bicycles. He felt your radio show of Jazz and Blues out of Philly in 1960 was a revelation and for the first time he felt that he was not alone in his love of that music. This led to him setting up his first gig by tracking down Lonnie Johnson. We are all lucky to have your here on this forum.
  16. I love how the Dodgers are doing their best to hold firm. No other team can afford him here or in Japan. The remarks by the owner about how they won't bid against themselves are hilarious. I think this a battle of chicken they can win. One potential problem is if they do indeed sign him that he'll then not try hard because he's "only" getting $25 a year with whatever else he gets. True, all the Giants are doing is making sure the Dodgers are bidding against themselves. The Giants have no intention of getting Manny and Manny won't come to SF.
  17. Good time to revisit one of the the greatest record reviews of all time by Lester Bangs on this record. http://personal.cis.strath.ac.uk/~murray/astral.html
  18. Thanks for the info, keep posting and welcome. As for the new One Step Beyond RVG the sequence of the first two songs doesn't bother me as much as the thought that they may have just taken the McMaster version and cranked up the volume. I would have to the hear the tracks on the Mosaic to compare.
  19. Thanks Jazzbo and DMP. I will look for it, I am bit concern about the sound but it sounds likes its worth it just to have Extensions in a digital format and to pick up Naked City which is new to me.
  20. I second that part of the emotion ... $25 - $30 per "high quality" LP seems to be normal these days... Mosaic's pricing is not unique. I agree, I didn't mean to imply that they were over-charging, just that in these harsh times is there really a demand for this kind of item at this kind of price??? I know the "It Club" double cd set might be slightly difficult to find in certin countries but it's available online for around a fifth of the price, you would have to really love this set and be a vinyl nut to spring for this bad boy. Maybe the can a do re-issue of the original double vinyl that had all of the bass and drum solo's removed at a budget price? Just kidding. However, as great as Rouse and Monk play on this the bass and drum solo's might not be missed by most.
  21. Dead.Net just put up the pre order for the Hartford '77 show. "To Terrapin". I love May 77, this should be a good one.
  22. Palmetto is a great label, in addition to the Bobby Previte's the Frank Kimbrough and Ben Allison releases are wonderful.
  23. Excellent! The track Guitar and Vibes came up on shuffle this morning on the way to work so I decided to just go with the whole record as I enjoy it so much. With my recent free downloads for getting a friend to join I picked up more great Black Saint/ Soul Note releases: Paul Bley - Memoirs w/ Charlie Haden and Paul Motian) Kenny Wheeler - Butterfly Flutter By and this wonderful gem: Jack McDuff - The Honeydripper
  24. Yes, you definitely hear the outro portion of Saturday and Sunday at the beginning of Frankenstein. I don't see myself playing the disc and not those two songs together but they still should have got it right. The fourth track Ghost Town is my favorite.
  25. Neat: April 7 is the season opener for most teams and Game 7 of the World Series, should it go that far will be on November 5. All because of the World Baseball Classic, which ends March 23. Bud can add a World Series canceled due to bad weather on his watch to add to his resume. Knowing him he will move it to a neutral location so we can have World Series Week in Miami or Phoenix to please the corporate sponsors.
