If you folks aren't checking out Daedalus from time to time, you're missing a good bet. I just placed an order for 12 cd's at 5.98 a shot. From Ben Webster to Bechet, plus a few at 2.98 and 3.98.

forgive me if I repeat myself here, but these simple words define Wynton to me: Good lip, No ideas.

In NY it used to be Hebrew National but in recent years they've been cutting down on the garlic flavoring so now I agree that best is Sabrett's. -

A consideration for theologians: My wife's cousin went to Lourdes, where she fell and broke her hip.My question: "Is there a conservation principle at work here?????" -
I just received from Daedalus a Proper 4 cd collection of Dinah, but haven't played it yet. For about 20 bucks, it was irresistible. I can't review it yet, but you birds ought to know it exists anyway.

Ok--I'm an ignorant geezer but I don't understand the bit about Peter North. I've never heard of him before, let alone heard him play. Please enlighten me. I was going to say something negative about Chet Baker but I had second thoughts. I remember looking at lp albums of his, one when he was a young guy just starting out, and another close onto his death. There is such a marked change in his face that it can't be due to aging alone, but due to what he did to himself with drugs, that I can't say a rotten thing about him or his music. The only comment it seems fair to make is , tragic.

I just realized that I hadn't heard or read anything of Joe in quite a while. Does anybody know anything at all about him??

Unless you already have the DAT you'll find that the new Sony MD's are just as good and a lot cheaper, going for a couple of hundred to 3 or 4 hundred. Hitching it directly into the audio system seems like the way to go, if you can get the musician's permission. Good luck. -

Did that really happen. Almost that same scene was used as the beginning of an episode of "Six Feet Under" on HBO earlier this year. -

A buddy and I were at Condon's uptown, when a well dressed guy at the next table turned to us at the end of a set, and said, quite clearly, out of the blue "You know, Bud Freeman's the only saxophonist who can play this music" (Bud had just played a hot solo} My buddy said to him, "Well there's always Eddie Miller" He looked at us and said, "You're right, but that' s all. Bud Freeman and Ezzie Millrum, Ezieb Millrum, ees right" , and collapsed forward on the table, banging his head. I'd seen people pass out due to drink before, but I'd never seen anyone go from a state of complete sobriety to complete inebriation in the middle of a sentence. -
I'm older than most of you guys and grew up in the swing era. My friends and I knew the names of the sections of Goodman's band, Ellington's, and Dorsey's and Miller's. But when I heard my first record of Sidney Bechet, "Muskrat Ramble" I was a gonner. From there to Coleman Hawkins, Don Byas and the rest was but a step, as was the transition from swing to jazz. You guys made it over a much wider gulf.

Thank you people, all of you, for making me aware of these records you've been discussing. Do any of you, perhaps,, know of the fate of Fat Cat records and their jazz library? I've been on the hunt for some of them for years.

I gave up playing the sax because I sounded like Braxton.

I'll say it out loud and await the tempest to come. There are now and there have always been better trumpet players than Miles. Irwin Stokes and Nicholas Payton are two of the best. I decided to admit the emperor had no clothes during a Miles concert where he was dressed as a dervish or something, turned his back as usual on the audience and allowed electronics to take center stage, rather than jazz. And when the audience lit up their reefers in appreciation my wife and I walked out, to the superior taunts of the fans nearby, I gave up on Miles and went home to listen to some records by Louis and Warren Vache. So if theres some Miles that you don't really care for, it isn't your fault. Face it. He recorded a lot of shit. Believe your ears.

Mostlly I just lurk in this site, but occasionally something really activates my innards. Like the name Art Hodes. I've been a collector of his stuff for years, and an admirer ever since a friend of mine, a clarinetist who had played with him, tuned me in to him. My favorite, strangely enough is an lp of Christmas songs and carols, and I'm not a religious type of guy. A terrific record, and I can't find it, dammit. He also has a jazzoloogy lp of gospel tunes, but I prefer the Christmas stuff, also on Jazzology I think. I agree that the Mosaic Bluenote stuff is top of the line,if you can get it. In no particular order, I recommend the following: Art Hodes and Milt Hinton "Just the Two of Us" Muse MR 5279 AH "Selections from thte Gutter" Storyville SLP4057 AH "ART of Hodes" Euphonic ESR 1207 "Albert Nicholas Quartet" with AH Delmark DL207 AH "Pagin Mr. Jelly" Candid 9037 All of these are LP's and probably hard to find, but you want to know what of Hodes is superb and these get my vote. IMHO. To me, there are no bad ones. There are many more and I haven,t included any cd's . He recorded a great deal for Jazzology, and they have been putting a lot of their early stuff on cd. Later stuff I guess is all on Sackville.

Obscure records you love which never get a mention

I doon't think I even own this anymore because raccoons got my old 78's. Dates back to old big band days, but don't scoff until you've heard it. Bobby Sherwood's "Elks Parade". Features the best trumpet solo Sherwood ever did.(Bet most of you guys never heard of Sherwood, wot?) -
I have been out of the speaker market for so long I wouldn't attempt to recommend a particular brand of speaker. I do however, given the fact that you live in Manhattan, advise that you go to upper end hifi shops with a CD of your own, one with which you are already familiar. Make it one that covers the entire audio spectrum and which is one of your best hifi cd's. I don't mean by that one of the loudest. Have them run it through their best systems with different speakers on A=B tests and let your ears be the judge. I'd also recommend you take a look at the website of CAMBRIDGE SOUNDWORKS. They have occasional sales and free shippings. Just a thought. I've had good stuff from them for secondary speakers.

Thank you for the information. It just seems that technology has passed me by.

I moved up in 1960 to a 1958 Volvo 444 with twin carbs. One hell of a car. I later switched to Saabs and now I'm driving a 1970 Model 99 Saab. Got to keep up with modernity. B-)
