  1. I've been looking for that Uptown 'Baron Mingus' over here but so far without luck..
  2. Miles Davis 'The Man With The Horn' (CBS)
  3. In the middle of the scrummage at the CD counter perhaps? B-) (I wonder if he will have the forthcoming Dutton Vocalions in stock?..) Cheltenham was a bit manic for me I'm afraid. Didn't stay there, hopped back South each evening so it made for quite a bit of driving. Worth it though. I would have liked to have seen the Ingrid Laubrock and F-IRE on Saturday but I see that they are playing Bath so that's good.
  4. $721 is a great price for the 3 sets. Someone got a pretty good deal there.
  5. It looked like he was genuinely moved by the reception. Great stuff ! The two guys from 'Vinyl Vault' (great store B-) ) who manned the vinyl stand at the festival by the way mentioned that they had got to meet Ornette backstage and got a signature or two as well. Very nice approachable guy by all accounts. Only spotted their stand on the Monday but it came up trumps with the nice Miles items. How did I get to miss it on Sunday? ( ).
  6. Harry South Harry Barris Barry Harris
  7. I was in the audience for the Hilton Ruiz 'Live at Birdland' CD, recorded by Candid. Alan Bates was at the very next table. As there were only about a dozen of us there when the recording was done, I can recognise my applause quite distinctly.
  8. Good sentiments - I'll second that. Like all of the MD box sets, I find that this one is indispensible. Informative booklet too !
  9. evan - there's very little of McNair available on CD I'm afraid and the vinyl is in huge demand amongst the DJ fraternity of 'Gilles Peterson- clones/wanabees'.. However, all is not lost ! Stand by for the new Dutton Vocalion reissues which include one of McNair's best. John Cameron's 'Off Centre'. I agree with you that McNair is a very fine and under-rated player. Hugely prominent as a session player over here in the late 60s/early 70s. His playing was heard by 10s of millions every week on BBC TV as the flute lead on the 'Top of the Pops' cover version of 'Whole Lot of Loving' (I think that's what the tune was called). There were quite a few UK jazzers in that group (including Cameron drummer Tony Carr, I think). I wish someone would reissue 'Harold McNair' (RCA), which has 'The Hipster' on it. 'Flute 'n' Nut (Island) has also not been reissued on CD. Never heard it but apparently that has a larger group doing covers of 60s tunes. 'Affectionate Fink' on Island with Izenzon and Moffett from around 1965 is also rarer than a rooster's nashers and is incredibly expensive (and in trashed condition ) when it comes up on ebay. Hope this helps !
  10. Does Lonehill come into this category? (I also avoid these but funilly enough I also have just the Navarro set. Damn ugly packaging and visual eyesore, among other things).

I second that recommendation on 'jazzcds', evan. A great source of UK jazz. If you value the health of your wallet, stay clear of the Kenny Wheeler section though.. B-)
  12. I occasionally see 2nd-hand video copies of those programmes over here, on the 'TCB-Publishing' imprint. When I see them I invariably pick them up. The 'Jazz Crusaders' and 'Amy/Bolton' sessions are particularly good.
  13. Adam's parents (his mum anyway) live/lived not too far from there so I guess that's where he got the inspiration.
  14. Dan McCafferty of Nazareth Ronald McDonald Crusty
  15. Captain Bly Captain Sensible Reckless Eric
  16. I just caught the first BBC radio broadcast of the 'HHG' on the drive back home. Didn't recognise the episode but it had Zaphod failing to pay his bar bill with Amex (I'm sure this wasn't on the original series - maybe Adams wrote some additional episodes?) Anyway what was uncanny was that the plot featured Arthur Dent being dropped off after hitching a ride on a space ship on the A303 road in Somerset. I was driving along that very same stretch of road at the time
  17. You're sorted ! Just spinning a UK original of Miles' 'Star People' (how did this one pass me by, especially when I caught this band live playing much of this stuff ). Followed by a German original of 'Miles in Berlin' and the CBS-Sony of 'Miles in Tokyo'. Both in tip-top mint.
  18. The BBC are currently repeating the original 1980 show and I think the radio series is also being re-broadcast.
  19. I've got the feeling that it's been shortlisted for issue on a Mosaic Select. Don't know about any cardboard sleeve format reissue. Not to gloat on this ( ) but I've got it on the King vinyl.. A very nice session, certainly one of his best from the 1970s. Sort of reminds me of 'Cirrus' in terms of overall groove - but even better. The group lineup includes Thurman Green and Oscar Brashear, who fit in very nicely. Great Harold Land on here too. Of the tracks 'Cowboy Bob' on side 1 is a particular fave and there's a reprise version of 'Roses Poses' on side 2.
  20. Albert 'Tootie' Heath Edward 'Grocer' Heath Maggie Thatcher
  21. I've got a Jap LP copy of the Rhoda Scott with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. Pretty good as I recall, will have to dust it off tonight. I also saw Barbara Dennerlein live over 10 years ago now when she was still in her 20s. 'Hot Stuff' inded ! That 'Hot Stuff' CD has quite a few potboilers but there's also a couple of more reflective numbers which cover this 'quieter' aspect of her playing. The German Baroque church organ influence creeps in quite a bit on these tracks.
  22. A great haul of Miles vinyl picked up recently, for a very reasonable sum. All near-mint originals: 'Star People' 'Man With The Horn' 'Dingo' 'Aura' 2LP set 'Miles In Berlin' (German CBS original) 'Miles In Tokyo' (Japanese Sony original)
  23. Thurman Green The Jolly Green Giant Pete Jolly
  24. Greasy Luigi Pope Alphonso III Odeon Pope
