  2. Yes, the LP does have a harsher sound than BN's of that era (Dick Bock production I guess). Just picked my Liberty PJ copy of this out of the rack and will give it a spin this afternoon. A nice version of 'Stolen Moments' on this LP, although the version of 'A Train' is a bit throwaway. I see that Ervin insisted that pianist John Hicks be flown in from NYC especially for this session.
  3. Isn't it 'Micheline Pelzer'. Her father played host to many visiting jazz stars in Liege, Belgium and I think that's how she got the invite to do the recording with Wayne. There's an interesting section on this in James Gavin's 'Deep in a Dream' book. Just been playing Dizzy Gillespie 'Perceptions' Verve deep groove pressing. Lovely stuff - superbly orchestrated by JJ Johnson. Followed up with Rhoda Scott 'The Thad Jones Mel Lewis Orchestra With Rhoda Scott' (Japanese Barclay). This one smokes !!
  4. Of course, 'Structurally Sound' was recorded out on the West Coast by Pacific Jazz so some of that 'vibe' may be a factor.
  5. Too much excitement this time of the morning..

  7. Those Rearward reissues are fantastic ! That's just about my favourite reissue label. The LP sets in particular are outstanding - great packaging, great sound. I wish just wish they would reissue a few more rare Campi CBBB sides but so far, very happy with Rearward. I have the Black Lion 'November Girl' LP. A bit crackly in terms of sound but I'll stick it on the VPI to see if that improves it. If not, I'll stick in an order for the Rearward. The Karl Drevo is also worth checking out too, along with all those cool Italian jazz issues.

  9. Don't play this one enough. I'll spin a couple of the Q-LPs later tonight..
  10. Interesting that Steve Turre wasn't in the lineup that night. The group at Ronnie Scotts I caught those two nights (which had Turre) played many of the same numbers. 'You and The Night...', 'Katrina Ballerina' and 'Organ Grinder' bring back very fond memories. Looking forward to this !
  11. Miles Davis/Michel Legrand 'Dingo' (WB) This one was significantly better than expectations....recommended !
  12. Just noticed from Amazon that this one is about to be reissued in CD over here in Europe: Gitte Haenning With The Clarke/Boland Big Band Recorded with Danish singer Gitte Haenning back in 1968 I believe. One of the few CBBB recordings I haven't yet heard, looking forward to checking this out.

  14. Followed up with 'Miles In Berlin' (German CBS) Both this and the Tokyo album sound spectacular !

  16. I've been looking for that Uptown 'Baron Mingus' over here but so far without luck..
  17. Miles Davis 'The Man With The Horn' (CBS)
  18. In the middle of the scrummage at the CD counter perhaps? B-) (I wonder if he will have the forthcoming Dutton Vocalions in stock?..) Cheltenham was a bit manic for me I'm afraid. Didn't stay there, hopped back South each evening so it made for quite a bit of driving. Worth it though. I would have liked to have seen the Ingrid Laubrock and F-IRE on Saturday but I see that they are playing Bath so that's good.
  19. $721 is a great price for the 3 sets. Someone got a pretty good deal there.
  20. It looked like he was genuinely moved by the reception. Great stuff ! The two guys from 'Vinyl Vault' (great store B-) ) who manned the vinyl stand at the festival by the way mentioned that they had got to meet Ornette backstage and got a signature or two as well. Very nice approachable guy by all accounts. Only spotted their stand on the Monday but it came up trumps with the nice Miles items. How did I get to miss it on Sunday? ( ).

  22. I was in the audience for the Hilton Ruiz 'Live at Birdland' CD, recorded by Candid. Alan Bates was at the very next table. As there were only about a dozen of us there when the recording was done, I can recognise my applause quite distinctly.
  23. Good sentiments - I'll second that. Like all of the MD box sets, I find that this one is indispensible. Informative booklet too !
  24. evan - there's very little of McNair available on CD I'm afraid and the vinyl is in huge demand amongst the DJ fraternity of 'Gilles Peterson- clones/wanabees'.. However, all is not lost ! Stand by for the new Dutton Vocalion reissues which include one of McNair's best. John Cameron's 'Off Centre'. I agree with you that McNair is a very fine and under-rated player. Hugely prominent as a session player over here in the late 60s/early 70s. His playing was heard by 10s of millions every week on BBC TV as the flute lead on the 'Top of the Pops' cover version of 'Whole Lot of Loving' (I think that's what the tune was called). There were quite a few UK jazzers in that group (including Cameron drummer Tony Carr, I think). I wish someone would reissue 'Harold McNair' (RCA), which has 'The Hipster' on it. 'Flute 'n' Nut (Island) has also not been reissued on CD. Never heard it but apparently that has a larger group doing covers of 60s tunes. 'Affectionate Fink' on Island with Izenzon and Moffett from around 1965 is also rarer than a rooster's nashers and is incredibly expensive (and in trashed condition ) when it comes up on ebay. Hope this helps !
