  1. That's very sad news - thanks for posting this. I'm certainly a fan of the LP with JJ. No news of this on the media that I can see here in the UK but maybe it will feature in the press tomorrow. RIP Bob Farnon. A terrible week for jazz-related fatalities. It will be good to see the back of this one.
  2. Monk Blue Note LP set, side VII..
  3. Art Blakey and the Afro-Drum Ensemble 'The African Beat' (BN NY USA stereo original) Wayne Shorter 'The Collector' (King BN Japanese pressing)
  4. Anyone know when the next (eagerly awaited) batch of 'Impressed Repressed' from Universal will be hitting the UK High Street? (No doubt it will be the same week that Dutton Vocalion offload their booty )
  5. Another recommendation for the Dynaudios. I've used Contour 1.8s for some years now and in addition to looking great they sound superb, very pleasing on the ear. The 'Audience' series is probably the one for you to check out, as has been mentioned.
  6. JJ Johnson 'JJ !' RCA Dynagroove original - JJ with stellar 1960s big band.
  7. Apparently, I used to wander into the house next door when I was about 4 and bash away at the keys of the upright piano a la Cecil. The lady who lived in that house used to fume inwardly when I did this but bit her lip and didn't say anything - only in England ! A few years after that I got my first record - 'Sounds of aircraft from World War 2' (or something like that). Engine sounds of Messersmitts, Spitfires, Hurricanes, Heinkels - it had them all. It's shocking for me to think now that WW2 and the blitz was less than 20 years in the past, at that time ie. still recent history. From that aircraft noise EP, it was an entirely logical step to collecting Mosaics and rare British jazz ( ).
  8. Nice session. I have the 1970s UK Philips budget release (1974/5 ish). 'Big Leg Mary' is the standout track for me.
  9. The Three Sounds 'Vibrations' (NY USA mono, Liberty cover). This one gets slagged off a lot in the reviews but I rather like it.
  10. Very sad news. Fond memories of seeing Arnie with Louis Bellson's orchestra back in the 1970s. May he rest in peace..
  11. Nick Brignola/Pepper Adams 'Baritone Madness' (Beehive) Wow !!!
  12. I used to see that 'Gardens of Harlem' LP on JCOA in the bins all the time back in the 1970s. There were LPs by Leroy Jenkins and Grachan Moncur (which I've got) also put out around the same timeframe (1975/76?). Wish I'd picked up the Clifford Thornton. Similarly, 'The Panther and the Lash' was fairly readily available in London. Wasn't Cliford T. involved with the Black Panthers, or is that just heresay?
  13. 'The Essential Miles Davis' - French CBS 3LP set with 'velveteen mock Indian restaurant wallpaper' cover on the box. Also includes a 45rpm of 'Great Expectations'.
  14. A very happy birthday !! :rsmile:
  15. Makes up for those $120 Commodore Mosaic sets we miss out on ..
  16. I recommend the set - it's a fascinating selection of material. In fact it was one of the very first CD box sets I ever bought (at 20% off, if I recall correctly B-) ). Some of it of its time, perhaps, but an important chunk of Joe's discography. I find some of the more obscue material in this box e.g 'Canyon Lady' and the Luis Gasca tracks to be some of the most enjoyable listening. Overall, the 'Power To The People' material is probably the strongest. That session is well up to 'A1' Blue Note standards of the era.
  17. Well I'm half-Canadian so I have an excuse I guess !
  18. 'Gerry Mulligan Meets the Sax Giants Vol 2'. (UK Verve). This was the very first jazz LP I ever bought in 1974 and I haven't played it in years. Amazingly, it is still in mint ! Great work by the late Stan Levey on the Mulligan/Getz tracks. Will follow up with more LPs from the Mosaic 'Complete Roulette Basie Live' set
  19. Well, I for one am crazy about the Ardleys. The whole lot right through to 'Kaleidoscope of Rainbows'. Must check out 'Harmony of the Spheres'. I don't have 'Symphony of Aramanths' and am looking forward to the reissue when that comes out. Anyone catch that feature on Ivor Cutler that was on BBC4 last week? Robert Wyatt hinted on that programme to a 'jazz connection' with Cutler. The 'Black Marigolds' by Michael Garrick does have several tracks of poetry on it. Superb solo work by Joe Harriott on one of those tracks. The ensemble pieces on this album are tremendous, particularly 'Ursula' (which is featured on the Gilles Peterson compilation). There are also several Argo LPs with the Poetry and Jazz. One of these 'Poetry and Jazz 250' is a 2LP box set.
  20. I was just reading the writeup on him in Val Wilmer's book 'As Serious As Your Life'. Born Philadelphia, 6 Sept 1936. Apparently drummer JC Moses was a cousin. 'The Panther and the Lash' must figure in the list of significant albums.
  21. Would have gone for much more if it had been available for shipping worldwide. I'll have to get a US postal address !
  22. The vinyl of 'Gerry Mulligan Meets the Sax Giants Vol 2' on Verve is just going on the deck. That one has some of my favourite Stan Levey.
