  1. That's the one I was thinking of.
  2. Lou Donaldson 'The Natural Soul' (BN NY USA mono original). A bit noisy this one but the VPI record cleaner has improved it immensely.
  3. Would that be the SME's 'Karyogin' (I think that's what it's called). Never heard it though. The 'People Band' is also new to me (not that big on free I'm afraid..)

    Ronnie Ross

Here's the John Cameron, Tooter. signed Sherlock.... B-)
  5. I'm only familiar with him from his work on one of those Metronome All-Star sesions from the late 1940s. The rest of the band were boppers, so he was somewhat the odd man out. Fitted into the lineup very well though, I recall.
  6. Glad to hear it. My set is still 'in the mail' with the Amos Milburn LP set and I had been wavering over ordering the set as a result of some of the reservations over sound. Frankly, anything Mosaic issue with Stanley's name on the front of, I'm going to buy. Can't wait to hear this one B-)
  7. Yes, 'On The Corner' it is.
  8. $130 is a great price for the Clayton set. I've seen it go for over $300 on quite a few occasions. Hugely enjoyable sessions and that great 30th St studio sound. How can you lose?
  9. Followed up with Shake Keane 'Dig It ! (Decca Phase 4 stereo original). MOR session but interesting..
  10. Yes, great story Jim. Didn't Shari Lewis pass away not too long ago? She used to be a 'regular' on UK TV talk shows back in the late 60s/early 70s so all of this takes me back very much to my childhood. That 'lambchop' was quite a character - amazing what you can make out of an old sock. What I do remember about Shari was the length of those crazy false eyelashes she used to wear. A great pro, for sure !
  11. I always think of 'Tender Moments' as one of his very strongest Blue Notes, but there again I guess it's down to personal taste. A very good session IMO.
  12. I'm booked in for his Cheltenham Festival appearance next weekend and looking forward to it. Sounds like it's going to be unmissable, from these reports.
  13. I've always wanted to hear that one, too. Cover and band look great, and I have a feeling it might be 'free'. Yes, I think it is. I have a feeling that Evan Parker and/or Trevor Watts are on this one too.
  14. For this Sunday morning we have: Clifford Jordan Glass Bead Games (Strata East original 2LP set) Thelonious Monk Complete Blue Note Mosaic (LP 4) Freddie Hubbard 'Hub Tones' (BN NY USA mono, DG one side) Sam Rivers 'Contours' (BN NY USA mono version) Wayne Shorter 'Night Dreamer' (BN NY USA mono version).
  15. That's very sad news - thanks for posting this. I'm certainly a fan of the LP with JJ. No news of this on the media that I can see here in the UK but maybe it will feature in the press tomorrow. RIP Bob Farnon. A terrible week for jazz-related fatalities. It will be good to see the back of this one.
  16. Monk Blue Note LP set, side VII..
  17. Art Blakey and the Afro-Drum Ensemble 'The African Beat' (BN NY USA stereo original) Wayne Shorter 'The Collector' (King BN Japanese pressing)
  18. Anyone know when the next (eagerly awaited) batch of 'Impressed Repressed' from Universal will be hitting the UK High Street? (No doubt it will be the same week that Dutton Vocalion offload their booty )
  19. Another recommendation for the Dynaudios. I've used Contour 1.8s for some years now and in addition to looking great they sound superb, very pleasing on the ear. The 'Audience' series is probably the one for you to check out, as has been mentioned.
  20. JJ Johnson 'JJ !' RCA Dynagroove original - JJ with stellar 1960s big band.
  21. Apparently, I used to wander into the house next door when I was about 4 and bash away at the keys of the upright piano a la Cecil. The lady who lived in that house used to fume inwardly when I did this but bit her lip and didn't say anything - only in England ! A few years after that I got my first record - 'Sounds of aircraft from World War 2' (or something like that). Engine sounds of Messersmitts, Spitfires, Hurricanes, Heinkels - it had them all. It's shocking for me to think now that WW2 and the blitz was less than 20 years in the past, at that time ie. still recent history. From that aircraft noise EP, it was an entirely logical step to collecting Mosaics and rare British jazz ( ).
  22. Nice session. I have the 1970s UK Philips budget release (1974/5 ish). 'Big Leg Mary' is the standout track for me.
  23. The Three Sounds 'Vibrations' (NY USA mono, Liberty cover). This one gets slagged off a lot in the reviews but I rather like it.
  24. Very sad news. Fond memories of seeing Arnie with Louis Bellson's orchestra back in the 1970s. May he rest in peace..
