  1. My goodness, words fail me. I see that BB was 80 at time of death so I guess he had a good run though. This is really sad though as I really like his work with the CBBB. I'll have to put 'More Smiles', 'Fellini' and the Rearward 2LP on right now in recognition, really liked his flugel playing. Sadly, I never did get to see him play. RIP - may he rest in peace. A true ambassador for US jazz in Europe.
  2. Here's a cipped image of one from my vinyl vaults - Alan Haven 'Live at Annie's Room' (Fontana). Recorded in the 60s at Annie Ross's London Club. Some greasy tunes/titles such as 'Cod and Chips Twice' ( ). Big John Patton it aint, though..
  3. So the B*******s are now purveying Trojan Horses?
  4. That happened to me once. The 'heavy metal' track on Pat Metheny's 'Imaginary Day' was playing at the time..
  5. Big mistake !
  6. I'd fancy one myself but it's breakfast-time here..
  7. I wonder what sort of tax-payer's grant they were awarded to build that crap..
  8. My Turrentine Mosaic set has just arrived and so far it's sounding great - a definite for this one. I went straight to disk 5 for the 'Another Story' material and - wow - how come this session is so obscure? Stanley's solo feature on 'Stella By Starlight' is just beautiful, one of his best ever ballad features I think. The front line with Thad is a very compatible pairing. Another good example of Mosaic taking a logical grouping of undeservedly obscure sessions as a vehicle to feature particular aspects of the artist in question and add new 'focus' to his legacy. Sound quality sounds AOK to me too, although I've yet to check the first couple of disks. The usual great session photos in the booklet too, thanks to the Francis Wolff archive. So far, so good !
  9. This set is is typical of all that is best about Mosaic. Take some classic but undeservedly obscure music, restore the production mistakes of the past, provide the music in complete form and present with a definitive booklet packed with valuable photos from the session. One of their best !
  10. Spinning some newly-purchased original vinyl: Jack Bruce 'Songs For A Tailor' (Polydor) Colosseum 'Daughters of Time' (Vertigo 'Swirl' label) John Surman 'Westering Home' (Island) John Surman 'Live at Woodstock Town Hall' (Dawn)
  11. Oh no, what terrible news to wake up to. At least Percy lived a good long life. RIP and condolences to the family, I'll spin some MJQ today in memorium. These past 2 weeks have been unbelievable in jazz-RIP terms..
  12. Indeed. I've actually got a bit of BBC video with Slim Gaillard interviewing Percy at the Northsea Fest (back in the early 1990s I guess) and the subject of the WW2 service comes up. Percy is unbelievably modest in his response to Slim. Incidentally, I think Brother Jack McDuff and Milt Jackson are also on this particular interview.
  13. Oh no... I've only got Vol 2
  14. Some new Miles vinyl, to accompany my reading of the new 'Last Miles' biography (an excellent read, by the way): 'You're Under Arrest' (CBS) front cover but nice inner sleeve art doodles. Heard much of this music live during the 1985 European tour, brings back fond memories. 'We Want Miles' (CBS 2LP set) 'Siesta' (WB, with Marcus Miller)
  15. I was looking at a copy of that 'Flight Path' album in a store today with the picture on the back of the guys standing right in front of the Twin Towers. Gave me the shivers just looking at it..
  16. I think I saw mention on a notice that Lonnie was playing a gig in Vancouver, BC yesterday. I see that they are reunited for a gig in NYC in June. Gotta see it.. B-)
  17. Basie 'Complete Live Roulette' Mosaic LP 2 to be followed up with: Hank Mobley 'A Slice of the Top' (BN 'Wally' Edition) 'Complete Blue Note Grant Green/Sonny Clark' Mosaic LPs
  18. I'll put the vinyl in my listening pile for the next few days and post thoughts when I have re-digested. The Japanese pressing sounds typically good by their standards, so strange that you mention poor sound quality.
  19. Wow ! That bad, Jim R? OK, its not up there with the esteemed group of 50s Norgrans and Verves but I rate it a most pleasing listen. What don't you like about it?
  20. Mike - I picked up a near-mint copy of that very same Verve LP just a couple of months ago and I agree, it sounds terrific. It's my only Tjader LP.
  21. Thanks for the reminder, I nearly forgot. I'm not sure if I will be actually in the UK on the 17th, all depends on the timing for my hols. If I'm around, I'll be there !
  22. Excellent album and superbly recorded. I've got a Japanese CBS vinyl copy. Tal even does a 'funk' number ! (last track on side 2, most interesting...)
