I remember hearing him talk about early jazz and blues on CBC radio back in the early 1990s, when the Jeff Healey Band was pretty big. His knowledge was certainly impressive, a real enthusiast in the best sense !
I have the Roulettes on vinyl and they are both magnificent (see separate thread about 'mint' Live set just sold on ebay for nearly $600 ). I'll hold off on the Clef for the time being but will buy this one in due course. The Roulette material is just timeless and a great tribute to Teddy Reig, as well as Basie himself. The booklets for both sets are particularly informative too.
tooter - 'Off Centre' is a quartet album with Harold McNair. Its a fine session - I have the Deram vinyl. Soon to be reissued on CD on Dutton Vocalion (see separate thread on British Jazz).
Don't know what happened with my cut-and-paste tooter but looks like you sorted it out.
I wonder what the music is like on this one? If its just jazzed up lite-classics with Ronnie accompanying then not worth the punt I guess. If its half-way up to the standards of the follow-up album 'Off Centre' then it definitely would be.
Maybe we should all pool resources and buy it? B-)
Would that be the SME's 'Karyogin' (I think that's what it's called). Never heard it though. The 'People Band' is also new to me (not that big on free I'm afraid..)
I'm only familiar with him from his work on one of those Metronome All-Star sesions from the late 1940s. The rest of the band were boppers, so he was somewhat the odd man out. Fitted into the lineup very well though, I recall.
Glad to hear it. My set is still 'in the mail' with the Amos Milburn LP set and I had been wavering over ordering the set as a result of some of the reservations over sound. Frankly, anything Mosaic issue with Stanley's name on the front of, I'm going to buy. Can't wait to hear this one B-)
$130 is a great price for the Clayton set. I've seen it go for over $300 on quite a few occasions. Hugely enjoyable sessions and that great 30th St studio sound. How can you lose?
Yes, great story Jim. Didn't Shari Lewis pass away not too long ago? She used to be a 'regular' on UK TV talk shows back in the late 60s/early 70s so all of this takes me back very much to my childhood. That 'lambchop' was quite a character - amazing what you can make out of an old sock. What I do remember about Shari was the length of those crazy false eyelashes she used to wear.
A great pro, for sure !
I always think of 'Tender Moments' as one of his very strongest Blue Notes, but there again I guess it's down to personal taste. A very good session IMO.
I'm booked in for his Cheltenham Festival appearance next weekend and looking forward to it. Sounds like it's going to be unmissable, from these reports.
I've always wanted to hear that one, too. Cover and band look great, and I have a feeling it might be 'free'.
Yes, I think it is. I have a feeling that Evan Parker and/or Trevor Watts are on this one too.
For this Sunday morning we have:
Clifford Jordan Glass Bead Games (Strata East original 2LP set)
Thelonious Monk Complete Blue Note Mosaic (LP 4)
Freddie Hubbard 'Hub Tones' (BN NY USA mono, DG one side)
Sam Rivers 'Contours' (BN NY USA mono version)
Wayne Shorter 'Night Dreamer' (BN NY USA mono version).
That's very sad news - thanks for posting this. I'm certainly a fan of the LP with JJ. No news of this on the media that I can see here in the UK but maybe it will feature in the press tomorrow. RIP Bob Farnon.
A terrible week for jazz-related fatalities. It will be good to see the back of this one.
