Thanks for the advisory. My usual 'alladin's cave' also has a mintish copy of this going for £5 so I'll snag it when I'm in there next.

'Galaxians' cost me a whole mountain of 10p pieces at the pub. I remember when that ping-pong tennis came out too. Seemed miraculous at the time in that distant analog past. B-)

Excellent stuff ! I think quite a few people have mentioned the Elmo Hope Quintet sides so this one is going to make a fair number of people happy. I'm delighted to see the 'Quebec 45s' on the list. That's one OOP Mosaic I can now forget about.

I've got the feeling that the Scotts engagement might have been 1980. Suspect the lineup (my memory is a bit hazy) was probably Coleman, Sal Nistico, Mario Rivera, Frank Strozier, Harold Mabern, Clint Houston and Billy Higgins. Great band in any case ! I'm also racking my brain as to who the supporting band was. Might have been either Elaine Delmar or Susanne McCorkle I think I paid a couple of pounds to get in as a student mid-week and for sure got a very good seat courtesy of the 'house' policy of the time (big thanks to Ronnie for that..)

I'm trying hard to recall who else was in the band. Mario Riviera I think on baritone. The gig was at Ronnie Scotts (where Coleman did some great engagements back in the 1970s).

You're right, it's a terrific LP. So good in fact, that the obsessive-compulsive I am will snatch it up if I ever see it on CD. Great versions of "Green Dolphin Street" and "Frank's Tune" in particular, which reminds me that Frank Strozier is also on the date. I saw that octet when they toured the UK back in 1979 I believe. Strozier was certainly on alto. I see the 'Big George' LP quite va bit in second hand racks over here (wasn't it on Affinity?)

Either 'Agharta' or 'Dark Magus' with the volume cranked up full. The inner sleeve of 'Agharta' would be suitable reading matter..

The 'trust Mosaic' factor is definitely important. It's unlikely that I would have gone for full sets by Charles Brown, Amos Milburn and T-Bone Walker but the Mosaic 'seal of approval' and scholarly treatment definitely influenced my purchase. I'm very glad it did, as these sets have given great pleasure and broadened the taste from the hard-bop stuff that forms the core of my collection. Ditto the New Orleans Atlantic set.

I'd love to see a good book written about Tubby Hayes, up to the same sort of standard as the excellent bio of Joe Harriott. I believe Simon Spillett's currently working on one A bio of Woody Shaw would be real cool...

Wow! This one was news to me. Was that album with LaPorta and co. originally done for Debut or for some other label? Interesting to read that he taught Pat Martino in his early years.

Booker Ervin 'Structurally Sound' (Pacific Jazz) To be followed up with: Booker Ervin 'Back From The Gig' (BN Reissue Series twofer) and Jackie McLean 'Right Now' (BN NY USA mono)

Just revised my opinion significantly upwards on the Ervin version of 'A Train' after giving it another listen. Booker plays superbly on this - as indeed he does throughout the session. He's both very fluent and overflowing with things to say. John Hicks on piano is a major plus factor for the date.
