  1. The group are also coming over to Europe (in May I believe) with 3 London gigs, one of which will be with orchestra. I'll be checking out their quartet gig (with Gary Thomas) in Poole.
  2. For any vinyl-heads reading this thread, a good vinyl of this one to get hold of (and very cost-effective) is the 'Blue' label Liberty/UA. I've checked this one against a NY USA stereo original and it holds up extremely well, soundwise. No distortion on the cymbals - always a concern when listening to any session of that vintage with the esteemed Mr Williams on drums.
  3. 'House of Flying Daggers'. That title sounds like most places of employment..
  4. 180-190 sounds like 'Running Low' so wonder why they put it in 'Last Chance'.
  5. suspect that they might have done this short tour as a bit of a favour for Soul Brother and in order to publicise the Anthologies. I sure never thought I'd ever get the chance to see Eddie Henderson doing his 70s material so this was a great bonus. The Exeter gig was a last-minute addition to the itinery and not given great publicity so really glad to have caught it. Also great to have caught Gary Bartz live and at close range. He has an extremely personable stage presence and is in GREAT playing form at the present time.
  6. Gary Bartz 'Anthology' 2LP set, Soul Brother Records.
  7. A Bennie Maupin Anthology would indeed be great ! Bennie actually got a namecheck at the gig by Eddie H when introducing 'Amoroso' as 'written by our good friend Bennie Maupin'. Just spinning the Bartz Anthology right now (specifically 'I've Known Rivers'). It's a great listen and Gary has signed the cover 'Music Power... Gary Bartz'. Cool or what ! B-)
  8. I saw her band with Watkins and Anderson in about 1992/93 when they were on a short North American tour. There's most definitely a European touch to her playing - constant practicing of Bach in her youth most definitely comes through and there's that choral/folk heritage that I hear also in people like Mike Westbrook. She comes across as an extremely dedicated and those Enja albums are good stuff. Particularly like 'Hot Stuff !' with Andy Sheppard in the lineup. She looks great too, which is a bonus !
  9. Saw Eddie Henderson and Gary Bartz last night at a one-off gig at the Exeter Phoenix, after their 2 shows at Jazz Cafe, London over the weekend. The gig was set up by Soul Brother Records and much of the material was drawn from the two anthologies of these guys put out by this label. Astonishing stuff. Bartz was playing with incredible drive and groove. Henderson was in fine 'Mwandishi' form with wah-wah pedal and delay lines in action. Quite a bit of stuff played from the 'Capitol' anthology ('Amarosso', in particular, being superlative). Both of these guys can really deliver on this stuff. Soom good vocals from Bartz too, on 'I've Known Rivers', 'Celestial Blues' and several others. Soul Brother also had a trade stall set up, where you could buy autographed copies of the 2LP or CD format 'Anthologies'. Great stuff !
  10. I'm curious to know what you think of this one, having just seen this particular group on an old TV recording.

Not sure what the tracks are on this one, Tooter, but may be of interest.

    Ronnie Ross

Tooter - Ronnie made a sterling short appearance on the Beeb last night. I wasn't expecting it but the Bill Le Sage 'New Directions In Jazz' unit were featured on that Duke Ellington 70th Birthday 'Love You Madly' tribute (from 1968 ish) along with Stan Tracey's Big Brass. Absolutely wonderful show - after total chaos with my video recorder failing initially to record BBC4 off Freeserve and totally losing the 'Ronnie Scott at Coconut Grove' , I cracked it with 1 minute to go and I think I've got the Ross recorded. We'll have to look at transferring this to DVD for you. Ronnie took just the one solo but it was a nice one !
  13. Larry Young 'Contrasts' (Liberty) Lew Tabakin 'Rites of Pan' (Disco Mate, Japan)
  14. Ahem.... Blue Parrot
  15. The lineup on these sides looks too good to miss. Touff, Kamuca, Perkins, Al Porcino, Bill Perkins and arrangements by Holman & co.; not an easy set to pass on. I guess Mosaic are nearing the time limit on this set and don't want to order a new pressing, hence the leap-frogging to 'Last Chance. I wonder if we'll see quite a few sets of the circa-2000 vintage (Roach, Wilson, Stitt?) do that this year.
  16. Yep, identical to mine.

Don't have the LP I'm afraid, Tooter but glad that this was of service By the way check out the BBC4 Jazz Britannia lineup - looks like the 'Jazz 625' show may have some footage of that Bill Le Sage/Ronnie Ross group. I thought that stuff had been wiped over by the Beeb years ago
  18. This was all over the West of England news today. Caused a whole load of guffaws around the office
  19. I've pre-ordered along with grabbing a Herman set. Looks stonking !
  20. British tradder Harry Gold (of 'Pieces of Eight' fame) used to play the bass sax.
  21. Whoaah ! 'Kenny Wheeler Big Band' rec 1977 from 'Omnibus' and the Tubby Hayes Big Band from 'Jazz 625'. Not to mention Rendell/Carr in the 'Duke' tribute.
  22. Indeed ! My video recorder will be in continuous action. Lots of great stuff to be broadcast over the next few weeks, including a couple of hours of 'Jazz 625'. Check out some of the listed bands - I'll have to give Tooter a heads up about the LeSage so that he gets some rare Ronnie Ross footage in the bag.. Jazz Cup Runneth Over On The Beeb.. Its 'fill yer British jazz boots' time
  23. Never thought I'd ever see it ! Harriott Pic

Don't think this one is on your list Tooter but I'll post it in any case (Tony Kinsey RFH, 1954).
