I remember seeing Ray Russell in that Gil Evans orchestra during one of their weeks at Ronnie Scotts. He fitted very nicely into that lineup (along with Surman, Don Weller and co.) I believe that after that tour Gil returned to Europe to play in Russell's group at the Montreux Fest, so they must have got along pretty well. 'Dragon Hill' was originally put out on CBS Realm I believe..

I have a copy of this which I picked up many years ago around 1980 at a Mole Jazz sale, without the box and booklet and with LPs in plain sleeves. Sounds OK, nothing earth-shattering. The Bergenfield LPs sound significantly better though, if you can find them in good condition.

'Peeping Tom' was banned for many years in the UK and Powell's career never recovered - tragic. I remember seeing it at about 4am in an all-night student film show. About the only outlet here at the time to see it.

My 1978 vintage Zerostat is still going strong. I think it cost about £5 at the time !

Certainly exists - but rare. There was one on ebay a short while back. I suspect that the stereo of this one sounds the better, based on the 'Liberty' vintage.

Second that opinion on 'New Wave'. It is a strong date by Dizzy with his early 60s group. I have this one on a Philips LP.

Re: the sound quality of CDs and LPs. In my opinion it is not clear cut, there are some instances where the LPs sound to me clearly superior (e.g. early BN LPs in good condition) but other occasions where the CDs shine. Case in point I have just 'AB'd a first pressing Pacific Jazz Gerald Wilson 'Moment of Truth' with Mosaic set CD1. The CD version sounds better to me, more dynamic range, more depth - most suprising. Possibly a byproduct of some fiddling around I have been doing with the connectors on the Naim CD power supply, which may not have been optimally set up previously. The very fine mastering on the Mosaic is also clearly a significant factor. End result is that the Mosaic CD sets are taking on a whole new life..

Funny, the initial thought that came into my head when I saw this thread was Reuben Wilson 'On Broadway'. I had absolutely no idea what the artist, other album and the connection might be !

Have been having a good jaugh at Philip Larkin's 'All What Jazz - A Record Diary'. Some pretty obscure stuff managed to get reviewed in this one, including Earl Anderza 'Outa Sight' and Ronnie Ross's 'Cleopatra's Needle'. Good entertainment !

Listening a bit earlier to disk 5 of the Duke Ellington 'Reprise' set. This is one Mosaic that grows in stature with every listen. The 'Symphonic' stuff on disk 4 an Afro-Bossa on disk 2 are particularly good.

Great groove on 'Backlash' and Spaulding kicks ass

The box design sucks but can't quibble at the price for these sets. All of them worth having in one form or another, I think. Too bad though that Zweitausendeins don't seem to be doing all those Fantasy box sets any more (all those amazing deals for the Monk, Tatum, Pepper, Montgomery, Coltrane etc. boxes seem like a golden era now).

Wasn't 'Blues In Trinity' recorded in North London and not Paris? The story was that Tony Hall (producer) put out the Paris story as subterfuge in light of the Musicians Union ban on Americans recording in Britain at that time.

The TV series was reshown on the BBC towards the end of last year. Absolutely magnificent - the suspense as they run through the Straits of Gibraltar then get attacked by the destroyer is something else. I recall when that series first came out and was shown on TV here - must have been around 1985. Around the same time there was another excellent German series called 'Heimat' which told the story of a family through WWII and beyond in an area that I seem to recall was called Hunsruck. One of the best TV series of the 1980s - I wonder if it is available on DVD with subtitles?
