  1. One of the newspapers over here the other day had a good cartoon of a certain ‘artiste’ tinkling the ivories to that one and the piano falling apart.
  2. A junior school buddy of mine had one (at least, his father did) and I can remember spinning MOR stuff from that collection (e.g. very cheesy Hawaiian stuff such as Wout Stenhuis) on that quadraphonic music centre. Seemed the bees-knees at the time. I think the records were stereo though.
  3. Believe it or not, it was a Poetry show, so they did some jazz and poetry ! Should be in the BBC archives. I had a ticket to see a subsequent broadcast they did at BBC Maida Vale Studios but sadly, couldn’t make it.
  4. I actually saw the Garrick ‘Home Stretch Blues’ lineup back in the 2000s. It was for a BBC broadcast and pretty sure that all of the lineup were still then present. Sadly, Don Rendell and Michael Garrick are no longer with us but the rest of the band are still active.
  5. No doubt another good little racket for Royal Mail !
  6. Some very good material on those samples. That Neil Ardley ‘Olympic Studio’ material recently put out by the excellent ‘Jazz In Britain’ operation is a real find - early NJO demo and a prototype run of ‘Greek Variations’. Also some fine and rare stuff put out by Gearbox. Really like That 2LP Alan Wakeman Octet set that they have put out.
  7. The proof of the pudding (for me at least) will be future orders from JazzMessengers. Otherwise - don’t care !
  8. I once found a bundle of these sets at £30 to £40 each in very good condition and including the Basie Live Roulette and in a major London store too. So - it does happen. Mainly CD versions but the older ones were vinyl. That day was like birthday and Xmas combined.
  9. I have a quadraphonic ‘Bitches Brew’. Never heard it in other than stereo. My Impulse LP of Sam Rivers’ ‘Crystals’ is playable quad as well.
  10. Wading into this box.
  11. And almost sabotaged by those idiots at Yodel, as I recall..
  12. Fair enough - UK Jazz Journal are counting the Hayes as a 2019 release in their 2020 ‘round up’ as well.
  13. The Tubby Hayes Fontana Box would be hard to beat in any poll - it came out in 2019 I think though.
  14. Claude Williamson or ‘Fiddler’ Williams?
  15. CD2 - Mindblowing !
  16. It was interesting to read the text with regards to what it says about the ‘Memphis...’ album, namely that BN ‘nearly released it 2 times’ back in the day.
  17. I had a ticket for the Colston Hall performance on that tour but couldn’t make it - snowed in !
  18. Very sad news. I saw him just over 10 years ago as part of Charles Tolliver’s Big Band and he looked in good shape at that time. He was doubling on both baritone and tuba. Yes, his work on Mobley’s ‘Slice’ album was great, as was his work with Gil Evans - RIP. First albums I heard with him I think were Shepp’s ‘Mama Too Tight’ and the Evans Hendrix tribute.
  19. I remember paying about $90 in Canada for that box nearly 30 years ago. Seemed like a fortune and a total extravagance back then. Now - a bargain.
  20. Personally then (and I speak for my own main system with a good CD player and even better vinyl source) the MM would win hands down. Both of them very acceptable though.
  21. No contest - but it would depend on your source i.e. a great CD player playing TOCJs would be superior to an inferior deck playing the MMs.
