  1. Enjoying the first bit of the Horace Silver Memorial Broadcast (with Phil's verbal diversions). Great resource.
  2. More Rollins on Esquire - 'Worktime'.
  3. Another really good Beehive session and I need to dig that Mosaic out !
  4. Mosaic 'The Complete Verve/Clef Charlie Ventura & Flip Phillips Studio Sessions' - First 3 LPs of Ventura material. Very rich sounding, glad I went for the LP option all those years ago when it was on 'last chance'. The Ventura tracks are interesting and full of beans !
  5. Not for many a year now, sadly. Nor were they ever available in any significant quantity, especially the earlier ones. I don't remember seeing any if these in Ray's, although I do recall they held a warehouse load of Dial 78s and the like but that would be in the 1980s. Playback quality usually trounces Prestige originals as (unlike Prestige) they don't use recycled vinyl.
  6. Ronnie Ross 'Cleopatra's Needle' (Fontana Jazz, stereo) Another one in 'the book' !
  7. Correct. Too easy for someone living in this country !
  8. Eric Kloss 'To Hear Is To See' (Prestige blue label, stereo)
  9. Yes, Tony Levin (also of Tubby Hayes Quartet fame). Now- album and track?
  10. Correct. The drummer is... (hint - a 'Tony' but not the one Jsngry had in mind !)
  11. Charles Earland 'Black Drops' (Prestige)
  12. Yeah, it's really good. One of those albums which looks diabolical on paper but which really works. Tribute to Leadbelly.
  13. Not Ian Carr or anything to do with him ! Agree that the rhythmn section is really good. All regarded very highly over here. Soulpope (I think) would recognise the bassist.
  14. Yeah, good point. I'll probably end up buying it. The one banjo exception I have is that Clifford Jordan 'These Are Our Roots' on Atlantic. Surpasses expectations.
  15. I was thinking of picking up the reissue - but your words here have raised my caution too. Not a great fan of harmonica either, especially in a Hutcherson/Land context. What next...banjo?
  16. @mjazzg - Correct on the tenor player. Only someone familiar with the scene over here would likely identify that very fine and underrated player. Now the rest..
  17. @Eric - Is that Oliver Lake on alto?
  18. Not Billy Harper ! Not Alan Skidmore ! Not early 70s, not Cobblestone, not Tony W. The bassist is most definitely an underrated master.
  19. Sonny Rollins Quintet 'Plays For Bird' (Esquire)
  20. No probs. Since getting this set the Sonny Clark LPs have been getting not too much play, always a good sign.
  21. Sonny Rollins 'Perspectives' (Esquire) A masterclass in how to condense it all in 3-4 mins per track.
  22. Just had a look at the booklet - there seem to be half a dozen or so which were previously issued only on CD. Some of which were alternate takes. Incidentally, the CD sound on the set is very good indeed.
  23. I did my 'landing' as a Canadian permanent resident in Detroit, back in the day - heading in from Windsor, ONT. Tried to find the Motown Museum but without success. The whole thing was an 'interesting' driving experience.
