I think Don Lanphere toured the UK back in the late 70s/early 80s. Will have to check Jazz Journal - remember him being interviewed.
’Trumpet at Tempo’ - still have the Spotlite LP, will dig it out.
That Esquire 45 is a second edition I think. I think it was Clunky who said he had a 78 of the ‘Wailing Wall’.
If there is one set of vinyl that gives a fond and instant reminder of undergraduate days of yore it is both volumes of this. Especially that nuclear rock concert through big woofers, 2nd vol. I think. Plus Marvin sashaying from left to right speaker.
Look’s like they have used the original cover for this version. Maybe I’ll opt for this CD version - had been thinking of picking up both volumes on vinyl but have rarely seen good copies.
Same year, 1991 I think but at the other side of Canada. It was during the Jazz Festival season so I guess she and the band must have traversed the country. It was at the Yardbird Suite in Edmonton.
I think it was Licorice Pie Records. With a name that daft, who can forget it !
Camberwell rings a bell as well so quite possibly that other store was Dixons. I remember that they had a very nice copy of Elmo Hope’s ‘Sounds From Rikers Island’ but it was very pricey.
I’ve got loads of the Prestige/Milestone/Fantasy twofers and I still pick them up when I see ones I want. The pressings, especially UK and US, are usually very good.
The Gillespie is one that I have just recently discovered. It is sublime !
He also left music for an improbable second career as a Software Manager. Could never fathom that out at the time it was announced but in light of the reported medical condition, it now makes more sense.
First time I saw him was with the 70s Woody Herman Herd. He was a major contributor to that line-up, must have been around the time he started recording with Metheny.
