  1. 'Not the Messiah - but a Very Naugthty Boy'. I will miss Terry Jones no longer being around. He was always a witty and informative presence in more recent years on terrestrial TV covering historical/classics matters (in which he was expert), until his sad final illness kicked in. A very kind man too, by all accounts.
  2. Sad news - Mr Creosote and 'Two Sheds', RIP.
  3. Hotep Idris Galeta? When I saw them in the mid 90s Rene was still in the lineup along with Steve Davis. I think it was one of Jackie’s ex students (Alan ...forgot the surname) on piano.
  4. Not many who were better than him in arranging for mid-sized groups either. A master at getting a quart out of a pint pot.
  5. R.I.P. - I remember seeing him with Gillespie Alumni orchestras on several occasions.
  6. Such sad news - but what a great life ! Saw him a number of times in the 1990s/2000s and each time he played like someone half his age. Very under-rated and an important player on tenor and soprano. R.I.P.
  7. Same crew appeared in London, without Arkestra - I have a copy of the London poster (different) as well.
  8. Just the one too - older set and it has always been like that.
  9. Prefer not to have the expedition in and out of the jungle.. I did make the previous London Strata East thing at the Barbican but would prefer to stay clear of the metropolis. The Cookers did Turner Sims, Southampton a few years ago so hopefully they might sign up Mr Tolliver. Will email them !
  10. Hopefully UK included and hopefully - locations outside of London too !
  11. Astonished at just how good it was - a pressing with tremendous presence and clout. Plus of course it is a stealth Hank Mobley record and Hank plays very nicely indeed. Maybe press the mono button on your amp?
  12. I think I paid about £70 at HMV. A useful set - mix of gems and ‘curate’s eggs’.
  13. The last track has a beautiful Wolfgang Dauner performance - R.I.P.
  14. Just got shipping confirmation ! That second verse of the poem needs to be read with ‘pipe and slippers’ deployed.
  15. My first Blue Notes were cassette deletions of Sixth Sense and Caramba. Grand total of 50p each !
  16. Sounds like a very plausible theory. I remember that downstairs ‘Blues and Roots’ dept. but don’t think I ever went down there by choice. I do recall that there was always a sonic battle going on between the loud bluesy stuff belted out of the downstairs speakers swamping out the subtleties of Bird and Tristano etc. from the ground floor system. Didn’t the book say that Ray’s friend Charlie Watts bought a load of those Parker 78s?
  17. That’s right - the DeeGee label too. Collets of course the direct ancestor of ‘Ray’s’. Didn’t realise that they lasted to 1998 (!) but there again, I wouldn’t have seen them as I never checked out the 78s. Must have a re-read of the Garth book..
  18. I remember a huge shipment of Savoy 78s on sale at one of the London stores (Collets?) in the mid 1970s. A veritable time capsule, by all accounts.
