  1. The next stage after that is booze flying off the shelves. Noticeable increase of that here after the pubs shut up shop.
  2. It was always a highlight of gigs by Eastern Rebellion and Cedar’s trio when they played ‘The Maestro’. Bob Berg was pretty adept on the changes to that tune.
  3. Indeed, it is an incredible classic. I was hoping to see Mike’s current and excellent big band next month down in Torquay, sadly now overtaken by events. I recommend ‘Last Night at the Old Place’ as a supplement to this one. Fidelity not the greatest but covers much of the material from this period, inc. ‘Release’. Probably put it down to the ‘norms’ of the time, I guess.
  4. Worrying font.. Time to crack open the Tubby box set again.
  5. Bill Birch’s ‘Keeper of the Flame’ book about modern jazz in Manchester 1946-72. Should keep me going until Xmas !
  6. Also mentioned on the radio news over here. I’d forgotten all of those big hits he’d had back in the day, duets with Dolly Parton etc.
  7. Spinning Commodore Vol 2 - starting with the de Paris brothers.
  8. Typical ! No, just a profile pic of Mobley. Can’t believe how much detail is captured in there. Pretty well every significant gig over the period must have been covered. Some superb photos too. Never realised what would have been Beaulieu 1963 was held in the Belle Vue grounds. I once did a gig there too (scout band ). Were you at the Duke Ellington Free Trade Hall Concert? (19 Jan 1963) There is a crowd photo of that one with Duke in the foreground.
  9. Is that ‘Airmail Special’ the one with the Ernie ‘Bubbles’ Whitman intro? Some great Navarro on that one.
  10. Further perusal of content confirms that this is a fantastic book and absolutely definitive. BillF - you were spoilt for choice back in the day. Very interesting to see the pic of the ticket for the Hank Mobley gig there back in 1968 plus a photo of the man himself at that location. Probably back at the time it was just one of many gigs so of no great note, I guess.
  11. I’m already home-working now for the foreseeable future. Will be initiating grocery home deliveries too, to avoid the scrum in the bog-roll aisles.. Last visit to the local supermarket they even had a few rolls in stock. Record Store Day looks iffy without further delay I guess.
  12. My Bill Birch book arrived today (with the postie placing the package next to my door and not handing it over, made me feel like a leper ). Looks like a great book - bags of detail in it. Brand spanking new as well - a great deal for £10.
  13. Selected London Underground stations closing as of today. Quite a progression from just the hand wash and distancing advice of a few days ago. London lockdown imminent I guess. Hang in there porcy !
  14. ‘Athanor’ sounds like it might be a character in Lord of the Rings. or maybe this..
  15. On one occasion I saw Teddy with his arm in a sling, unable to play but directing his group. That was unmissable too !
  16. Spinning the LP set and enjoying Roswell Rudd’s notes.
  17. I have it on Concord CD too - bought around the time it came out.
  18. A damn wood pigeon crapped all over my windows this morning.
  19. I wouldn’t hold your breath for June and suspect July might also be a gamble too. Glastonbury over here is likely toast. Suspect that my favourite jazz festival at Swanage may be impacted too.
