  1. Good little writeup on the set in the latest Marc Myers blog. As for the early 1980s - At least one NorthSea Festival had Hank listed as due to appear. I recall the adverts for it in the European jazz press (mentioned in small print). Never made it.
  2. This was (deservedly) one of their best sellers, I think.. Nice group photo of a fine team !
  3. Ray Avery cover photo !
  4. The first I got was Ack Van Rooyen ‘Homeward’. Always liked that one. I like the Dauner/Mangelsdorff duets and the Volker Kriegels too. Plus UJRE !
  5. Now there’s a familiar name - pretty sure I saw him with Elvin but not quite sure exactly where or when ! Uldated - a bit of research says it is highly likely to have been Sept 1979 at Ronnie Scotts. Ari Brown, Marvin Horn on guitar and Andy McLeod on bass. I have vague memories of them doing ‘Three Card Molly’.
  6. Saw that version of the Messengers in early 1983 (Feb?) too. It was Johnny O’Neill on piano, who plays very regularly these days at SMALLS and Mezzrow. Jean Toussaint liked the UK so much that he stayed, much to the benefit of the local scene. The lineup I saw before that had Wynton and Branford.
  7. First time I’ve played it for at least a decade but enjoying it. Very much of its time (circa 1990).
  8. Interesting timing - might have been late 1979 or into 1980 that I saw the group at Ronnie’s. Not entirely sure if it was Ponamarev on trumpet or Bill Hardman on a return stint but the rest of the group were as listed. Wish I had kept a diary ! Thinking about it, I can always check the gig report in Jazz Journal.
  9. Same here - first time I saw Blakey.
  10. Didn’t know that - on my list... One of his very best.
  11. Delighted to see in the booklet (up to Mosaic standards) Art reminiscing about his performance at Capital LJF 1980 of ‘Over The Rainbow’ backed by John Lewis, Slam Stewart and Roy Haynes. He brought the house down - and I can recall it to this day. Freddie Hubbard preceded him with this trio and Dizzy G. took over afterwards. They don’t make concerts like that any more.
  12. Not to forget Bill Holman !
  13. 10 years after it came out I finally got this great Pure Pleasure release. Sonics are superb, you could almost be in the club. Didn’t catch this particular Ronnie Scott engagement but I did catch Art as part of George Wein’s London Fest that same Summer season, so it all has great personal meaning. Better late than never. It blows the Mole Jazz LPs out of the water !
  14. My first reaction seeing that photo and where it was taken was ‘Bogey’ Gaynair too.
  15. Not to forget either his fantastic leadership and work with the United Jazz and Rock Ensemble (UJRE). That was a pioneering international group put together originally for a German youth TV show and put out many good recordings on his MOOD label which were fairly recently remastered and issued in Germany on CD. I do miss the days when you could order Dauner’s MOOD label catalogue from zweitausendeins..
  16. CD2 - well up to standard
  17. Same here - but with Herbie Lewis on bass. As discussed in previous threads.
  18. Just got a message that my Herman and Mobley sets are about to ship.
  19. Personally, I think ‘Hipnosis’ is a good session. Deserves a reissue. The King LP wasn’t around for long when it came out and probably only 1-2 UK outlets stocked it.
  20. His early work on the SABA label was particularly excellent. Recorded in HGBS’s lounge, I recall.
  21. Also on a (superior) King LP.
  22. Naturally - given the lineup !
  23. UK Vogue Jazz Double reissue from the 1970s - bought by me back in the day. A really excellent reissue series.
