  1. Have really enjoyed the Mobley 63-70 over the past few days and although all of the music was very familiar to me, it got me to think again about the development of the music, the interaction with Billy Higgins (a highlight of the set) and some all star walk on parts by the likes of Andrew Hill. I’ll be ‘in’ for the Lee Morgan too - also assuming that Malcolm Addey does the remastering.
  2. Remember seeing Swainson’s group with Fuller but alas no Henderson and Shaw. Not 100% sure on the rest of the group but hazy memory says Pat La Barbera and Don Thompson. Agree that that is a very nice CD with excellent work by Shaw and Henderson.
  3. Yeah - can’t go wrong with Dynavector. Elvin’s ‘Genesis’. What a great choice - that one really burns. Whenever I play the Mosaic set it is that session I invariably head to, with the volume cranked up. Great vinyl version put out by Music Matters as well. Very nice in the vinyl edition.
  4. A wheely trolley comes in useful !
  5. It helps being an Electrical Engineer . I even have to do RFI separation of bundles on my rats-nest.
  6. Fair enough - and a very good position to be in. First spin for this one on Gearbox Records - new copy picked up in a sale last week.
  7. Yes, if you are anything like me there is a tradeoff now between the annual deterioration of hearing and how much you are prepared to spend on future upgrades. One reason I like Dynavector cartridges is that they give you quite a good trade in discount when renewing. I am thinking of putting IsoAcoustics Gaia isolators to replace the Contour spikes but that is probably me done !
  8. Yes - He was of the same era as Ronnie Scott, early UK bebopper (I think he might have been involved with Club Eleven). Not sure if ‘Benny’ was his real first name or if it became his inevitable moniker.
  9. Amp-wise I switched up to Naim NAP 300 DR last year firing into big Dynaudio Contour 60s. Very happy with that, likely my end game switch as NAP 552 with 500 DR would bankrupt me, not even considering the Statement option.
  10. Did I say Stan Tracey on drums? Silly me - piano of course. There was also a Brit ‘Benny Goodman’ who played drums in this era. Or maybe Jackie Sharpe?
  11. I always remember a good record store porcy ! My vacations are highlighted by what vinyl shops I called in at.
  12. I hope that isn’t the one I remember visiting. It was in an old building in a hip cluster of shops and I had the feeling that it had been a running concern for many years. The owner was European I recall and he had some nice SABAs on display. I picked up the Sadi ‘Ensadinado’ there and also the Neil Ardley ‘Greek Variations’ Aussie version, which was at a very reasonable price. There was also a store I visited further out in a more suburban location which was megabucks but offered genuine rarities, mainly in the classic rock idiom. Outnumbered by you fancy Brinkmann guys - old traditional fart here running sprung mattress Linn deck with Naim. No bass and treble controls in this household.
  13. More from the Mobley ‘63-70 box
  14. It was more easily done in times past. Got the Contemporary nearly 20 years ago at a quite reasonable price, pretty well mint too. The Vogue was more recent - in great nick and I got change from £30. Misterioso - I see you are from Melbourne. I recall a really nice vinyl outlet on that long street in a trendy area, on the way out of downtown with the trolley busses (sorry, can’t recall the name of it). Not cheap but I picked up a few nice offerings when I was there.
  15. Well - you know what the answer is then. Pay more tax individually and corporate and implement an effective safety net for all.
  16. From the Mosaic.
  17. I have an original Contemporary stereo and the Vogue mono. That will do me fine ! No interest in getting hold of the new Masserati Edition or the Craft Slices box.
  18. Against all expectations it looks according to their website that JazzMessengers still have it in stock (as of this moment).
  19. I always viewed it as the other side of the coin in the way that the system is run. Low tax economy with more responsibility on the individual, less of a safety net.
  20. Not for much longer (at JazzMessengers) I guess. Yikes ! This reminds me of the time the Donaldson set and all those Selects went AWOL. Hopefully this gets corrected soon. Cracked open the contents of my set today and a couple of CDs in its a big plus on the sound quality. Malcolm Addey has done his usual exemplary job.
  21. The new Mobley ‘63 to ‘70 set. Went straight to CD7 ‘Reach Out’. Lovely crisp mastering - excellent ! And what a great picture that is !
  22. I think I paid less than 1/20th of that for my Vogue UK orig. It had better be good !
