  1. Never knew it was on there ! Jonny T. must have done it as one of those 50p specials and I guess the royalties period has now passed. It will be interesting to check out the remaster (needle drop? ) but I have to say, the mono vinyl sounds exceptional.
  2. Recall that I did see him once with his quartet in the mid 2000s. I think the venue was Cheltenham.
  3. What about the avatar version where Lou takes the ‘sannich’ and shuffles off with it..?
  4. A very good and not very well known LP on the Lansdowne Series. Starts off with a suite by Johnny Scott with strings, then some Shake Keane Quartet material followed by material from Ray Prebru’s group and the Alan Clare trio. Beautifully recorded by Adrian Kerridge. I believe that many of these ‘Tete a Tete’ performances were done on a regular basis at the Festival Hall and broadcast by Beeb radio. This copy of the LP personalised with nice message and signed by Mr Burman himself !
  5. Very sorry to hear this - RIP.
  6. Makes me feel like Zelig. Must have a beer sometime !
  7. I was a few rows behind, in the middle !
  8. Saw ‘Sons of Kemet’ several years ago at Swanage. Low key gig in the Methodist Church but they virtually blew the pulpit away with the 2-drums lineup ! Where were you sitting? I bought the 2LP from the guys after the gig and got to chat and they signed it for me. Friendly, enthusiastic guys. Evan P. was great that night (but isn’t he always..)
  9. There’s some good stuff coming out of the UK at the moment with these guys prominent but also the likes of Shabaka Hutchings, Yazz Ahmed, Empirical, board member Alex Hawkins and Phronesis, which I’ve seen and can vouch for. It all bodes well for the future.
  10. Yes she was - performed in the second half of the show along with Evan Parker and Byron Wallen, just as on the album. She’s obviously influenced by Alice Coltrane but I felt that she also drew quite a bit on the Welsh harp folk-based tradition.
  11. I’ve heard them and met them ! Saw ‘Journey To The Mountain Of Forever’ in performance. Sterling stuff.
  12. Yes, it is out on Equinox/Northway and has had very favourable reviews. I’ve also got the Graham Collier bio by Duncan Heining on order too, also put out by Northway so some good reading coming up. Must get hold of the Peter King. I still have that Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Vanguard Orch. tome to read too !
  13. Also caught Don Rendell a few times (the last time was at Ian Carr’s tribute concert) as well as both Traceys in various Stan Tracey groups on quite a few occasions. I’ve also got the Stan Tracey bio by Clark on order. Have seen Alan Skidmore a few times too but I don’t think I ever saw his Dad. Kenny Graham way before my time but I can remember seeing performances by Humph’s group where he announced a Kenny Graham arrangement. That group had Kathy Stobart, a superb and very under-rated tenorist (not unlike the present day Karen Sharp in style).
  14. Short deluge earlier this morning - not before time. Much more comfortable over here today.
  15. Kenny Graham, Don Rendell etc. ‘Tenorama’ (Nixa DG mono)
  16. He is fantastic in solo recital. Seen him a couple of times at Bath. The first time was in the Georgian splendour of the Assembly Rooms about 30 years ago, with wine served by the glass during the recital. A hugely civilised event in every respect and he played an absolute blinder ! If my memory is correct, tickets were about £6 and the wine was about £2 a glass !
  17. Calling in at the local HMV store this afternoon, I noticed that every single Kamasi release (including the EP) was on the wall display, alongside Adele et al, all on ‘special’. No surprise there. What was the surprise was to see a whole stack of Coltrane ‘Both Directions’ CD sets directly underneath, also in the charts and also on special ! I bought one of course (the Coltrane, that is).
  18. Not far off my thoughts either. Compare the impact that, say, Max Roach or Booker Little can achieve on a 30 minute Candid, with profound statements made and compare with the sprawling ‘covering all the bases’ 3CD behemoth. Or maybe I’m just getting old !
