  1. No sweat. Just Trunk’s site allocation is gone. It is up for preorder at a number of places, mid July I think. I’m just spinning the Vocalion LP for first impressions on differences and interestingly they do sound different. More spacious sound with the Vocalion. Possibly also Dave Green comes out clearer in the Trunk. Or maybe it is completely my imagination ! Noticed a bit of tape bleed through in the quiet bits which is present in both versions.
  2. Trunk Records reissue. Sounding good and the sleeve is definitely an improvement on the Vocalion.
  3. Ha - that’s funny. I’d forgotten that I’d commented in this one. Good to be reminded of details now forgotten.
  4. I went there once too about 20 years ago. Bought a Mosaic at discount from Scott at his stand (the O’Day). I recall the drive to the location being a bit on the unnerving side.
  5. Soft Machine - excellent gig up in York. John Etheridge, Theo Travis, Fred T. Baker and Asaf Sirkis. John E. confirmed that John Marshall and Roy Babbington had now taken well earned retirement (60 years of gigs for Marshall !), now replaced by Sirkis and Baker respectively. A nice mix of ‘old classics’ and recent material was featured in the two sets. Etheridge seems ageless !
  6. Not the greatest thing the CBBB ever did but very enjoyable and Gitte sounds fine on it. I have the reissue CD and a vinyl copy on German Hor Zu/Columbia, 70s reissue. I’ve not heard any of it but believe that she has done more jazzier stuff in recent years. Not a Schlager fan, it is up (down) there with C&W in my book !
  7. Beats me what it offers over and above the good Dutton Vocalion CD and LP reissue of some years back. Better sleeve, perhaps.

    Ari Brown

Saw him with Elvin - I think it was back in ‘79 (seems like an eternity ago). Next tour though he had Pat LaBarbara on tenor.
  9. RVG Edition - sounds pretty good. Conn CD Not in the Mosaic
  10. Some interesting new CD issues have appeared of late. Jazz In Britain has a very interesting Barbara Thompson release with early big band broadcasts from the early 70s and a prototype ‘Jubiaba’ from 1972 (George Chisholm alongside Ian Carr in the trumpet section !) British Progressive Jazz has a release by Kenny Wheeler Big Band which is reputedly the earliest Radio broadcast by this band. Some real finds now coming out of the woodwork ! I’m interested too !
  11. 1066 here - significant number in this neck of the woods !
  12. A bundle of nice Stan Tracey reissues on the Resteamed site. Nice sale currently on there.
  13. The ‘Breaking Point’ session. That disk sounds fabulous.
  14. Early days yet. My last Mosaic shipment took several months with the tracking lost but it did eventually get here. The Horace Tapscott took less that a week !
  15. Reminds me of seeing them at Fairfield Halls, Croydon circa 1980. Monkman was in the lineup I think. The only time I have seen John Williams live. In terms of the quality of music contained, this is one of the most revelatory of Mosaic sets I think. Phenomenal. Once you can get round the use of Bauer’s wire recorder on some of the tracks. Lennie T. Has been sorely under-rated. Imagine my surprise to walk into Tower Records, Santa Monica to find Scott and co. doing a free live appearance to promote their latest CD. Scott was friendly, bought the CD. Good times !
  16. I picked up a nice MPS reissue of this in Germany back in the early 2000s (in fact I was in the store, Vinyl West Stuttgart, with fellow board member Aggie). Also have that MPS CD twofer with ‘Happy Girl’. So will pass - but good that it is back out again. How about a reissue of ‘Happy Girl’? Nice one. Maybe I should buy it again !
  17. That Hodges Mosaic is good ! Liberty
  18. I have to say, based on the lineup announced, only The Cookers and Ron Carter stirred my interest.
  19. Sad news, RIP. I have always enjoyed his Blue Notes.
  20. Just noticed that this was recorded at El Camino College. Saw Chick Corea there back in the day.
  21. Wish we could put the clock back and have them appearing live at Ronnie’s next week !
  22. It’s a fair way off yet but just booked for The Cookers in Cadogan Hall, London in November at the LJF. Sure to sell out I think and would hate to miss it. Last time I saw this group was with our late friend JohnS about 10 years ago. This will be the first time I have caught George Cables live, all being well. Third row centre seat - should be good !
