  1. July - Arun Ghosh, Tim Garland and Art Themen Quintet at Swanage Nov - The Cookers, Turner-Sims
  2. How about Evan Parker on this one..
  3. Yep, some of the grocery stores ove here had budget labels in rotary racks such as MFP, Embassy, Marble Arch. Woolies, for sure.
  4. It must have been 1979 when I saw her, likely not long before she and Keith Ingham headed for the States. Like BillF, it was at Ronnie's. She seemed confident and upbeat on the stage as I recall, a fine performer. Some good vocalists featured at Ronnie's during that period - Elaine Delmar, Marian Montgomery and Salena Jones come to mind.
  5. I remember seeing McCorkle with Ingham's trio around the time that LP came out. They were the opposite group to either George Colemen or Cedar Walton I think. Not totally sure if Moss and Fairweather were in the lineup or if it was just the trio.
  6. There is film out there with Scott backing Tony Crombie's early rock & roll combo. They preceded Adam Faith etc. and never really caught on. Talking of which - critic and baritone saxophonist Benny Green was on this one..
  7. Jazz Crusaders 'Lighthouse '69' (King)
  8. It's just the Guardian pandering to their hipster constituency. Set to 'ignore'. Give it 5 years and these berks will be discovering CDs.
  9. Great 2LP set. Glad I picked up that one plus the other Wewerka compilation whilst they were available.
  10. Kenny Wheeler and John McLaughlin on trad/mainstreamer Sandy Brown's 'Hair at its Hairiest' session for Fontana. Freddie Green sounds like he is wondering if he is in the right studio on this one !
  11. Are those the tracks recorded at Puttnam Central in Brooklyn?
  12. How about Tubby Hayes with John Stevens and Trevor Watts in the 'Splinters' group?
  13. Hank Mobley 'A Caddy For Daddy' (BN NY USA, mono)
  14. Another gem from the archive, with very good sleeve notes by Charles Fox.
  15. Intriguing ! Presumably the Gil Scott-Heron album is 'Winter In America', track being 'Peace be with you brother'. Good sentiments..
  16. Amazing to think that Stan Sultzmann has been a great presence on the UK scene since at least 1971 and John Taylor's 'Pause and Think Again'. Not sure if this was his debut on record but if so, a very fine one.
  17. Aha - Les Tompkins recordings. Valuable as these are, the sound on all of the sessions I have heard has been passable at best. Still, good that this is out there. Spinning this one for the first time in over 20 years. Good Winter music !
  18. Clifford Thornton Frank Thornton Mrs Slocumb's Pussy
  19. Track one - no idea ! Track 2 - Sounds like Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson on Strata-East. Track 3 - Regina Carter on Verve? Track 4 - The tune is Jimmy Heath's 'Far Away Lands'. I think this version is from his 'Love and Understanding' session for Muse. Curtis Fuller on trombone. Track 5 - Sounds quite a bit like Azar Lawrence on tenor. Would this be from his 'People Moving' LP on Prestige with Patrice Rushen? Track 6 - Tenor/trumpet with big band, familiar tune. I need this one ! Would that be John Stubblefield with the Julius Hemphil Big Band? Rassul Sidik on trumpet? Track 7 - Thought for a moment it might be Empirical with Nat Facey on flute. Sounds more like Bryan Carrott on the vibes though. Track 8 - I have this one, great album. Grachan Moncur III with 'New Africa' from 'Exploration'. Billy Harper on tenor. Fine work from Andrew Cyrille on drums. Track 9 - Lively fusion track. Sounds like it might be Carlos Santana. Track 10 - Balkan influences here? Bela Fleck and the Fleck-tones? Track 11 - Herbie H's 'I Have A Dream'. That sounds very much like board member David Weiss on trumpet so must be by his 'Point of Departure' group on 'Venture Inward'. Track 12 - More Gil Scott-Heron/Brian Jackson. Nice. Track 13 - Short solo piano ending, no idea on this one but a nice finish. Very nice selection and enjoyed listening to it. Must get hold of Track 6 ! I drew a complete blank on the bonus. I guess there must be a Trump connection?
  20. I had to return a copy of the Garrick 'Sillouette' which was very crackly but the rest seem to have been OK.
  21. Wow - surprising considering the kit that Gearbox have and their usual excellent QC.
  22. Interesting - the one time I saw him was at a Charlie Parker London tribute in 1980 I think. Around the time he recorded 'Fire and Filligree'. Huge tone, I recall.
  23. Much as I like Yusef, if the sound is so-so then absolutely no point splurging on vinyl for this one from my perspective. Especially for such minimal running times.
  24. No doubt after dumping tons of waste on our shores - polluting heap o' crap !
