Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low
sidewinder replied to miles65's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Yep, case in point the Duke Pearson Select, which has two LPs per CD. Makes it quite a good value listen in my book. Makes me shudder just rereading that ! Fortunately, was able to fill in most of the gaps but never did pick up the Dinah Washington. -
Looks like some of these are worth picking up - I don't remember seeing too many of these around over here back in the day, domestically some were issued/pressed by Pye I think. I have the Helen Merrill 'Mixes' twofer in that version. The likes of Pete Yellin and Charles Williams, I don't think I've seen before. Picked up that Harold Land 'New Shades..' on vinyl some years ago and it is predictably good. I find the Mainstream recordings a bit thin and 'gloopy' in the bass though.

Thumbs up for both the Boogie Woogie box and the Pass. Both very nice.. -
RIP - What a great innings he had. I remember sitting right in front of him once by the stage as he did his act at Ronnie Scotts (alternating with Cedar Walton, I recall). I was right in the firing line as he proceeded to target members of the audience. Makes me squirm thinking about it. Ronnie Scott was stood on my left, enjoying every minute. Fond memories ! His outfit that night included black tailcoat, boot lace tie, levi jeans and sneakers

Couple of films I have heard Grant Green and Lee Morgan!
sidewinder replied to andybleaden's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
The moment the Morgan appears as a DVD my order will be placed. Rarin' to see it.. Here in the UK it got a couple of showings by the BFI Southbank as oart of the London Jazz Festival at the end of last year. Richard Williams in his blog posted some thoughts on it. I think at least one of the showings was a sellout. -
Nice collection but if I ever get to this stage I will shoot myself... Interesting story re: the Lithuanian 'Discussions'. Those 99 copies (minus the Chris Wellard stock losses) get everywhere !

Is that Herbie and Ron Carter doing the Mutley impressions whenever Miles responds to Teo?

I went into Rays and Fopp in London today and came out empty handed and not over fussed. A first ?!

I certainly remember her and her stories were quite amazing. Remember her mentioning about Miles Davis and Sonny Clark. -
What live music are you going to see tonight?
sidewinder replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Last night - drummer Magnus Ostrom's group as part of their UK tour. Terrific performance, they gave it 100% in two engrossing sets, with much of the music from the recent 'Parachute' CD release. Obvious echos of E.S.T. but with strong influences from Mahavishnu Orch. and PMG too. This will go down as one of my top gigs this year, I think. Happy Birthday Benny Golson ! A jazz survivor in every respect - is Benny the last from the 'Great Day In Harlem' photo still with us?

There was a very good thread on there about British Jazz but it imploded in acrimony after a few years, too bad. Artists such as Graham Collier also posted and provided fascinating insights. The earlier years on that site were the good ones. -

Have to say that I disagree re: the Nelson set. It is one that I spin regularly and enjoy. The 'Kennedy Dream' and Pee Wee Russell stuff is very enjoyable. -
Actor John Hurt has passed away
sidewinder replied to sonnymax's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Not to forget those fantastic TV performances in 'The Naked Civil Servant' and 'I Claudius' either, amongst others. One of the very best.. -

That is really sad news to start the day off with - he was a brilliant actor. Three film performances really stand out - 10 Rillington Place, Elephant Man and Midnight Express. RIP, he will be missed. -
Best Wishes and Good Listening !

Good one - with added bonus that you can view the same lineup and tunes on the 'Jazz 625' Ellington tribute show. Ian C. has a nice flugel feature on 'I'm Beginning To See The Light'.

Exactly my reaction too.. -
Nice to see mention of the late Miles Kington in that 'Times' 1970 review. He was the inventor of the language 'Franglais', much spoken by us Brexit Brits () and great fan of jazz. Recall seeing him perusing the racks on occasion at the now sadly lamented Jazz CD shop in Bath..

Charles "Bobo" Shaw (September 15, 1947-January 16, 2017)

Sorry to hear this - first heard of him from 'The Flam', amazing to think that it was 40 years ago now. RIP. -
'Jazz Journal' in August '77 mentions the Montoliu Trio at Scotts (no date given but presumably June) with Peter Ind on bass and Bill Eyden on drums (presumably subbing for Drew). Also on the bill was Elaine Delmar accompanied by pianist Pat Smythe. Apparently, the attendance at this gig wasn't great. Can't find any reports on the Jan 1977 gig. That Coleman/Montoliu duet LP on Timeless got good local writeups around that timeframe though. July 1979 edition of 'Jazz Journal' has a Scotts advert showing the Pass/Montoliu duo for 1 week from July 9th then Montoliu as solo act from July 16th for 1 week. Right before these gigs, Scotts had the LA4 for 2 weeks then Earl Hines Quartet with Marva Josie for 2 weeks. Those were the days ! Unfortunately, I don't have ready access for the moment to 1978 copies. Its a shame that the 'new' Ronnie Scotts took down the entire online archive of the 'Jazz At Ronnie Scotts' house magazine, which could have thrown additional light. They went down in my estimation as a result of that..

plus Larry Young 'Contrasts' and Clarke/Boland 'Golden Eight' I think.
