Yep, they were very good at Swanage back in July. Ant Law was playing his custom guitars back then too. Jason Rebello playing particularly well at the moment. Sirkis flew in from Paris especially for that gig. Dedication !

Yet another opportunity for me to boot myself in the *ss for not picking up that £10 copy in Mole Jazz - even though the dust and crud on it would rigger asthma at 1000 yards.

I'm quite a fan of those Sanchez Columbia CDs. OK, some of the tracks seem to be aiming at the MOR market but there is some solid stuff in there as well, particularly when Edsel Gomez is in the lineup. I guess it helps if you are a fan of the Puerto Rican style. Incidentally, I caught Sanchez with Hilton Ruiz at Birdland the night they were recording the Candid 'Live at Birdland'. Not one of Sanchez's better nights, perhaps. There were about 15 of us in the audience and Alan Bates was on the next table ! Remember seeing him on baritone in George Coleman's Octet ! Have to say that the Bobby Watson & Horizon releases of this era (maybe slightly before it) are a standout. The Blue Note releases in particular.

The Monk 'It Club' vinyl 3LP set seems to have been resurrected in 'Last Chance' !

No problem. With regard to the step up/down, the convention is source to destination for voltage so for powering 115V rated devices in the U.K. it is step down.

The converter for European use would be a step down converter (as in step down transformer). The front panel usually has a bank of (female) North American type sockets. The power lead at the back would (in the UK) have a 3-pin (live/neutral/earth) UK style fused plug, with earth bonded to the metal casing of the converter. The whole thing should be CE marked as well, of course !

No - Not a step up converter. What is needed is a voltage step down converter, from 230/240V AC down to 110/115V AC. When I did the move back over here I used one for a while until I got my kit of the time internally reconfigured by the manufacturer. Unfortunately my converter is now stowed away Bol so can't check at this time but from memory I think they are around 1kW rating or thereabouts. Typical U.K. amps are fused at around 2 or 3A, into 240V. The unit I have has a UK plug lead (3 wire with earth) at the back and a bank of North American style 2-pin connectors located at the front. Hope this helps !

Some Mosaic vinyl to kick things off today - 'Monk Quartet With John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall'. Phenomenal - can't believe I didn't pick this one up earlier 'Stan Getz 1953-54 Clef/Norgran Studio Sessions'. Very fine music and re-mastering/pressings.

Keith R's recent BBC4 'pirate' weekend broadcast had some good recollections of the early blues years and featured footage e.g. Muddy Waters at Newport. Not that I'm a great fan of his stuff but looks like he's on a roll of late.

Amazing that he kept so under the radar. He was worth about £100M apparently and rarely gave interviews or appeared in PD photos. Probably very wise !

Christian Schwindt Quintet 'For Friends and Relatives' (Fredericksberg). Love the robust cover design on this. Covering similar ground to the Rendell/Carr Quintet of that era.

Thanks for posting this - never seen it before. I remember at least one other interview done during this period - in London with Ian Carr I think, where Miles is doing a drawing whilst he is being interviewed. Nice to see footage of that Berg/Stern band as well !

I have a theory that there was a diabolical plot which had every secondary school and college in the U.K. given a gratis copy of this back in the 1950s to put the youngsters off the trail with total misinformation. Not knowing any better or having any other sources at hand in my school library it formed the basis of the literature to support a summer project of my own choosing (on guess what). Ended up with grand statements like the ODJB invented jazz and that jazz itself ended back in 1939..

What really amazes me is that he was born and brought up in Cleethorpes and escaped the North Sea fishing industry into the music biz. An incredible talent and one of the greatest songwriters to ever come out of these islands ! RIP to a good guy..

I notice that there will be a showi by the BFI as part of the London Jazz Festival but at £16 just to get in plus the cost of transportation to the Big Smoke I will have to wait until it comes out on DVD I guess. Shame..
