  1. Some real gems amongst that lot - not least the Kenny Graham.
  2. That was about the same time that I saw him with Sonny too.
  3. He was in the birthday list in the Times newspaper yesterday. Total class !
  4. I thought so.. I thought so..
  5. Yet more sad news - I'll be sure to play some of his stellar playing on Blue Note later on in the day. Maybe also the video of his 1974 Sonny Rollins gig at Ronnie Scott's. His music lives on - RIP. This year has been an absolute bummer for jazz musician passings.
  6. A famous Midlands house of jazz platters, perchance?
  7. Drew a blank but enjoyed the initial listen to this BFT. Also identified George Cables 'Think On Me' on track 11 and wondering if it might have been a Chico group too. The free track before that one sounds like the sort of thing that Company with Derek Bailey and Paul Rutherford might have done. The last track sounds familiar - Arnett Cobb with Wild Bill Davis?
  8. Kenny Burrell 'Midnight Blue' (BN NY USA mono)
  9. I've got several test pressings from that Doug Dobell '77' label. Picked up for a pittance from Mole Jazz.
  10. I'm half-way there!
  11. Lee Morgan 'Sixth Sense' (BN Liberty stereo)
  12. His comeback in the late 70s/early 80s was one that I will always remember - very unexpected at the time and a huge personal victory. Also vividly featured in that 'Jazz Britannia' documentary where he came across as warm, witty and very wise. In person - just the same.
  13. So sorry to hear this sad news this morning. He was a wonderful musician and still playing superbly just a few years ago at Swanage when I last saw him with Kate Williams' group. If I remember rightly, he was also scheduled to appear there this Summer but due to illness this was sadly not to be. The Wellins/Tracey collaborations are his great legacy. RIP.
  14. Slide Hampton, Dizzy Reece?
  15. Grey metallic was all the rage over here about 10 years ago - and then it switched to white..
  16. Belated happy birthday to a truly stellar musician ! I think I caught him on one occasion in NYC with Golson too.
  17. Have a great birthday Guy !
  18. Not to mention the 'Xanadu at Montreux's. Fortunately, I have those on vinyl.
  19. Have started off with this set by spinning the last 2 disks over the past few days with plenty of repeats. Stunning stuff and presented in very good sound, lovely and crisp. My admiration for the work of Coleman Hawkins has gone way up !
  20. Mike Taylor Trio 'Trio' (UK Columbia)
  21. I was tempted with one of those Buck Claytons but the postage and import charges plus a weak £ turned me off. Great opportunity to pick up some mint low numbered sets though !
  22. Didn't Jutta Hipp pass away a few years ago? Jon Hendricks is an absolute phenomenon. I remember seeing him at the NYC Blue Note well over 20 years ago now - he was an absolute barrel of energy at an age when most of his peers would have already been well into their retirement. Inspiring ! Julian Priester and Eric Kloss?
  23. I remember at least one feature in Jazz Journal around that vintage covering Shorty's comeback and that NYJO tour and the Northern concerts. Too bad I never caught any of his gigs. Didn't Steve Voce have a hand in persuading him over?
  24. A decade earlier and this oil crisis Woolworth special was one of my first (certainly the first Miles Davis I heard). Still have it !
  25. CD7 - with Max Roach's first recorded session.
