  1. Have started off with this set by spinning the last 2 disks over the past few days with plenty of repeats. Stunning stuff and presented in very good sound, lovely and crisp. My admiration for the work of Coleman Hawkins has gone way up !
  2. Mike Taylor Trio 'Trio' (UK Columbia)
  3. I was tempted with one of those Buck Claytons but the postage and import charges plus a weak £ turned me off. Great opportunity to pick up some mint low numbered sets though !
  4. Didn't Jutta Hipp pass away a few years ago? Jon Hendricks is an absolute phenomenon. I remember seeing him at the NYC Blue Note well over 20 years ago now - he was an absolute barrel of energy at an age when most of his peers would have already been well into their retirement. Inspiring ! Julian Priester and Eric Kloss?
  5. I remember at least one feature in Jazz Journal around that vintage covering Shorty's comeback and that NYJO tour and the Northern concerts. Too bad I never caught any of his gigs. Didn't Steve Voce have a hand in persuading him over?
  6. A decade earlier and this oil crisis Woolworth special was one of my first (certainly the first Miles Davis I heard). Still have it !
  7. CD7 - with Max Roach's first recorded session.
  8. Mosaic Count Basie Roulette Studio Recordings set, LP2 - 'Chairman of the Board'.
  9. Happy Birthday !
  10. I think I will stock up too - and the Tokyo ones look like a good place to start. The 'Night Flight To Dakar' 2CD was very enjoyable - I remember this one coming out on vinyl and passing on it. With this lot coming out and Mosaic doing the Beehive box set all we need to get back into the swing of it are multicoloured platform shoes, checked flares, gold chain bling and aviator shades !
  11. Next up - Stanley Turrentine 'Look Out !' (BN 47W63rd DG mono) 'Gil Evans & Ten' (Esquire, RVG)
  12. The 'Ensadinado' is great. Picked my copy up in Melbourne. You'll enjoy it, I'm sure. Spinning - Tommy Flanagan/John Coltrane 'The Cats' (New Jazz DG mono). Lots of copies of this have noise issues but this one is flawless. I need to stock up on a few of the Rearwards. Have most of them but one or two gaps..
  13. I think 'More Smiles' was released over here some years after it was recorded in the late 60s. 1974 I believe. Came and went pretty fast here in the U.K.
  14. Hank Jones/Oliver Nelson 'Happenings' (Impulse) Hank featured on the Baldwin Electronic Harpsichord - period piece but not without interest.
  15. Freddie Hubbard 'High Blues Pressure' (UK Atlantic)
  16. Yep, another band who were one of the highlights at Swanage last Summer. I enjoyed their performance at the Methodist Chapel. Did Trish Clowes tell the story of her tenor and how it got its name 'Shirley'?
  17. For me - 'Gerry Mulligan Meets The Sax Giants Vol 2' on U.K. Verve and Clarke/Boland 'More Smiles' on MPS/BASF
  18. Theolonious Monk (Swing LP spelling) The Mad Monk Normo Tebbitt
  19. After messing around this morning reconfiguring Naim Powerlines and getting significant additional soundstage and resolution improvement on vinyl and CD it's.. Fats Sadi 'Ensadinado' (Saba, stereo). One of the best sounding LPs I have.. to be followed by the Francy Boland 'Going Classic/Jazz Joint' on German Vogue (2LPs).
  20. Nov 16th concert should be a good one. All booked !
  21. Booker Ervin 'Heavy !!!' (Prestige blue label, stereo)
  22. Are you guys doing a double act touring the northern clubs ? Last night at an unspeakable hour, glad to have caught a set by Jack Walrath's Quintet at Smalls via the internet, preceded by Teodross Avery's Quartet. Great to see that Walrath is still in fine form and playing challenging music that is far from the current norm. Long may he continue to do so !
  23. A great 2LP set ! Spinning - Pat Martino 'Strings !' (Prestige blue label, stereo)
