  1. Foyles in London has a whole stack of this book on display in the Jazz section. Good to see !
  2. Not a fan of his classical stuff but his early recordings with Graham Collier (in particular) are great.
  3. Billy Harper was in the Strata-East lineup that played London recently with Charles Tolliver. Predictably good - always a pleasure to hear him play. Virgil Jones also appears on RRK's 'Slightly Latin' on Limelight, I think.
  4. I'll be happy with a BASF !
  5. That one sounds pretty good on the Mosaic Morgan/Shorter set.
  6. Along with Peter Cushing he was a brilliant performer in those Hammer Horrors. A distinguished and fine gent too - one of our best for sure. RIP. His performance in 'The Wicker Man' was definitive.
  7. Very sad news - a giant has gone. Glad I got the chance to see him, RIP. That 70s Atlantic 'Best Of' LP was my introduction to his music too.
  8. Same here - I'll dig it out. Those MFPs use to be everywhere in their rotary racks - Woolies, Boots, tourist shops etc. Amazing to think that there was a time when you could pick up a Bob Downes LP ('Deep Down Heavy') in Woolworths !
  9. Some good ones too - the 'Oliver Nelson and Friends' (Hank Jones on funky harpsichord !), the Chico Hamilton 'El Chico', the Archie Shepp 'For Losers' and the McCoy Tyner 'Inception/Reaching Forth'. Sound quality seems very good - should have bought even more of them ! I'm particularly fond of Inception/Reaching Forth. The one I got from this series (Sonny Rollins) sounds good. It was mastered at Eastside Mastering Studios, Berlin. This series was a European initiative? A lot of them are currently €15 for three CDs at amazon.de (about two thirds of the series). Much better than the US Impulse! Originals from a few years earlier (mostly Kevin Reeves). Those were garbage. The sound on these is better than the GRPs (not difficult) and also the digipacksI think. Certainly good enough for my everyday purposes and if I want to treat myself to a 'hi fi' listen then I'll pop a vinyl copy on if I have one (stand by for 'incoming'..). No point in splurging money on imported Japanese CDs.. The text in the booklet confirms that these originate in Germany - Darmstadt Jazz Institut seem to have been involved in the series as does (intriguingly) Dusty Groove ! The McCoy is a great release - two classic LPs. and where else can you hear Ollie Nelson and Hank Jones do a nice cheesy version of 'Winchester Cathedral'?

  11. A whole bundle of the Impulse '2LPs on one CD' series for £3 each at the good ol' London FOPP at Cambridge Circus.
  12. Amazing that I haven't bought any of them yet and probably now won't. It's not as if I didn't get the chance - being next to a rack jam packed full of them at Disk Union !
  13. Kenny Dorham 'Matador' (King) One example where an out-of-tune piano adds to the ambience !
  14. Wayne Shorter 'Speak No Evil' Another Pathe Macaroni brought back from the dead and sounding - excellent !
  15. Hiroshi Tanno closed the Early Records business up quite a few years ago, I'm sorry to say. A great loss !
  16. Indeed - I have dozens of these things, which were effectively my intro to Blue Note. They have been stuck in my racks for years, amazing I didn't dispose of them really. Golden rule - never, ever get rid of vinyl !

    Vocalion

Ah - the Cliff Adams Singers with that guy on accordion. I have the feeling that one might have been on just before the jazz. Very much 'of its time'.

    Vocalion

Blimey - with spoken intros by David Jacobs. Almost like a time warp.. Nice to see some more Vic Ash out there.
  19. Walked across that one and back the day after it opened !
  20. Used to have a somewhat worn Liberty gatefold, which was my dad's. I wasn't as struck by the music as I'd hoped to be. I have the Liberty of this one as well. The DMM has sat on the shelf for years, really surprised how good it sounds. This has always been a favourite Herbie session, along with 'The Prisoner'.
  21. Herbie Hancock 'Speak Like A Child' (BN French Pathe Marconi DMM) It should be garbage but with the phono stage having been z-foiled it sounds pretty damn good ! Time to dig out the old DMMs..
