  1. Howard McGhee 'Live is Just A Bowl of Cherries' (Bethlehem/London). Quite an unusual 1956 session with the 'Bethlehem Strings' Considering that this record is 60 years old it is still archival quality. Amazing really..
  2. All the best !
  3. Art Taylor Art Farmer The Wurzels
  4. No kidding. Is this an Alberta oil side-effect? Ordered. Nice one. I am sure that you'll enjoy it.
  5. Have a good Birthday Jon !
  6. 'Ritualistic Jazz'... Is this some sort of cult I'm missing out on?
  7. "You were lucky" (said in 4 Yorkshiremen voice)....We had an English Electric 10inch valve set which Dad used to have to boot to get a picture ! Even then, the line sync could never be relied upon.
  8. That's a nice deal on the Joe Pass. Good, enjoyable set - have been giving it a spin recently.
  9. Stan Getz Jane Getz Mother Hen
  10. Helps to make up for some of the crap we get over here most of the time.. The article in Jazzwise this month mentions that Tolliver likes playing to London audiences and gets a good reception here, which might have something to do with it. I last saw him here at QEH with his big band about 7-8 years ago now (just checked - it was 2007). That band had Billy Harper and Howard Johnson in it, amongst others. That's true - first time I checked he wasn't on the bill and I remember thinking 'what a shame Billy Harper isn't in the lineup'. This morning I noticed he was in. I know the problem John - coming in from the South and SW you are stuffed if the venue is the Barbican. I'll probably try to get round it by parking for ease of access to Paddington.
  11. Any board members going to this one, scheduled in London for late March? http://www.barbican.org.uk/music/event-detail.asp?ID=17295
  12. Mr Chow Steely Dan Desperate Dan
  13. Ah, Zenith TVs ! There's a blast from the past.. Not to mention valves in the back of it that you need to kick to get to work.
  14. Picked up the Guardian yesterday for a copy of the obit of Mr Terry and was amazed to see that the obituary was written by Ian Carr. Must have been written by Ian before 2004/5, when his illness started deteriorating. So, almost archival in itself..
  15. He'd better get his Strata-East albums out before the show next month !
  16. Sad news - but what a great musician and great ambassador for jazz. Much respect and RIP.
  17. Great news about the Stan Tracey book by Clark. Will have my pre-order in for Simon S's book as well. With a film/documentary on the way for Tubby, great year for Tubb-ophiles.
  18. Ian Carr's 'Music Outside' is an essential primer for British jazz of the 1970s and Alan Robertson's Joe Harriott biography is also outstanding.
  19. Happy belated birthday !
  20. Happy Birthday !
  21. Hope you have a good one !

    Vocalion

Definitely - he often gets overlooked but those Mercury and 77 Label LPs are up there with Tubby Hayes' output of that era, IMO. Particularly 'Storm Warning', a live session cut with Phil Seamen.
  23. Don't remind me about flamin' Intoxica again !
