  1. Yes, he was strongly featured on Esquire. Captured on this reissue - must get hold of a copy. Strange that they didn't include any of the tracks on the 'Bebop In Britain' 4CD set.
  2. Last time I saw McCoy was at the Bath International Festival several years ago (2008), he had lost a lot of weight - still playing great though with a lineup that included drummer Eric Gravatt and Joe Lovano.
  3. Sorry to hear of the recent passing of the fine Scottish tenor player Tommy Whittle. A real stalwart of the scene over here for many decades. http://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/oct/23/tommy-whittle Heard to great advantage on the Tubby Hayes 'Live at the Hopbine' CD (Whittle organised the jazz performances at this Wembley venue).
  4. Yeah, that band with Joe Ford/John Blake was fantastic. I´ll never forget the event when I heard them in March 1980. I just had a bad kind of flu and was reluctant to go to the concert. March 1980 - Must have been the same tour (or maybe the next one?). I saw them at Scotts as they were heading through London. To this day, I still think it's the finest gig I've ever seen and McCoy's playing was phenomenal. The rest of the band was John Lee on Bass and Wilby Fletcher on drums I think.
  5. 'Sama Layuca' is a good one. As is 'Horizon'. I saw the band not too long after Horizon came out, with the Joe Ford/John Blake front line and it was incendiary.
  6. Staines Massive Ali G Borat
  7. That's more like it. I need some Nectar points..
  8. Sadly, that programme influenced my thinking towards Mr Previn's jazz LPs for at least 20 years. 'I'm playing the right notes but not necessarily in the correct order'.
  9. Always regret selling my 'Phil Seamen story' LP on Decibel Records for a couple of quid. And my Frank Lowe 'The Flam'..

  18. I bought it at the time together with others riding high on the Rogers boom - also saw Shorty with NYJO. More the 80s tho' IIRC. Yes, I remember that UK tour he did with them and various features in Jazz Journal (seem to remember that Steve Voce was a friend of his). Only sorry that I never got to see him play.

  20. Yes, very annoying that is. Have obliterated more than my share due to this.
  21. One of the first West Coast albums I heard was Shorty Rogers 'Clicking With Clax'. Released over here (first time I think) on Atlantic in the mid-70s and a suprising hit in terms of sales.
  22. Having got the Mosaic Shorter Vee-Jay set and all of the Blue Notes I (thankfully) have no use for this set.
  23. Alan Partridge Bernie Mathews Ed Balls
