  1. Yes, I like the Rouse Blue Note too. He adapts well into the bossa style and the Latin percussion sets up a good groove too. Other than the copy I have I don’t think I ever saw it on original vinyl and I suspect it wasn’t reissued much other than in Japan. It came out of course on CD as part of the Conn series (I think I have a Toshiba from Mr Tanno somewhere). Wouldn’t be surprised to see it on the list for a future Classic or TP. I have that pressing too - the only version I have of it in stereo. If I recall rightly, the master tapes of that Bill Potts album were lost, as the Capitol CD was dubbed (came out in ‘collectors choice’ I think).
  2. Title track nicked verbatim from (or donated by) John Dankworth. Top 10 hit in the UK when issued !
  3. Any advance on my price of £20? Agree that it is a bit on the brief side but a good read, nevertheless.
  4. ‘The Cry Of Jazz’ came out on DVD some years back - I have a copy somewhere. Pretty sure it was recorded in Chicago.
  5. Sounds great. Sadly, a bit too distant from me. From what I could see of the Festival lineup, the pick of the concerts along with Ron Carter.
  6. About 8 or 9 fellow members in UK, Germany, Stockholm (hi Daniel !) and Tokyo. A real pleasure each time and in at least 3 cases, a gig was included. Sadly, JohnS, who I really enjoyed meeting at Southampton area gigs, is no longer with us.
  7. This is an essential Hutcherson Blue Note and a reissue, originally released in the Liberty era. Quite an adventurous release and prime Joe Henderson too. The Lewis/Higgins team also delivers as per usual. It was also reissued on CD as a Conn back in the 2000s and on vinyl in the latest Tone Poets. A gem.
  8. Nice ! Liberty LP - an old favourite.

    Ronnie Ross

Up for this old Ronnie Ross thread. A most unexpected BBC TV sighting of Ronnie tonight on a vintage ‘Top of the Pops’ from 1984 in the group Matt Bianco. He even gets to mime a solo on ‘Half A Minute’. Nearly fell off my chair when I realised it was him !
  10. NIce to pick up those 10” LPs. The only difficulty I have with them is trying to clean them using the VPI. Need to splash out for the correct size cleaning head.
  11. Lou Donaldson’s old copy?
  12. I think this one is very under-rated, have often seen it get lukewarm reviews. I would give it 4 or 5 stars. The NY pressing sounds great too - definitely no need for a Tone Poet (already scarce anyway). NY USA mono.
  13. NY USA stereo copy. Like the picture and every orig. copy of this one I have ever seen, the Liberty sleeve secateurs were faulty that day !
  14. Brad - see my comments up above, where I compare the TP with a NY mono pressing. I don’t think you will be disappointed with this new issue. With CDs I can only compare with the Conn but for sure the TP is an improvement.
  15. That would count as about 10 sonic upgrades. They did a fine job with this one.
  16. Again, first impressions very good. It reminds me a bit of the Conn in terms of sonic presentation but will have to check.
  17. Tone Poet version. First impressions are extremely good, will be comparing with a mono NY copy over the weekend, hopefully. Crisp and very quiet in terms of noise. Updated - dug out my NY USA mono copy. Again, impression is of more ‘umph’ and cut hotter than the TP, with more emphasis on mid range, bass and ‘more body’. Big John is in your face ! The mono is the more exciting pressing, the TP adds more refinement. Both are mighty good. Incidentally, I am impressed by the cover art reproduction on the TP. Original sleeve slightly darker in tone but not too much in it.
  18. 47W63rd St DG mono
  19. Sorry - meant ‘British Progressive Jazz’ not ‘Jazz In Britain’. Between them, these two companies are emptying our wallets over here !
  20. You can check it out on ‘Jazz In Britain’s’ Bandcamp site. Yes, although short it is a real find. On my (ever increasing) list of stuff to get. 😶
