  1. Nat Adderley 'Comin' Out Of The Shadows' (UK Mayfair, stereo). UK issue of his A&M record with Joe Zawinul/Bill Fischer + varitone !
  2. The Maynard set for $200 was a great deal for whoever got it.
  3. "Thankfully, it’s helped keep our doors open—we got the young people I was hoping for as well as the lunatics.." That's us, I guess..
  4. To stop anyone else having it? It's very good, and odd it hasn't had a life on CD outside the Mosaic. Probably because it's British Incidentally, I also came across a stash of multiple copies of this album a few years ago and passed as I already had a copy - and the Mosaic. There seems to be an alternative universe full of them (a bit like Biroid life forms..)
  5. Sam Rivers 'Fuscia Swing Song' (BN NY mono, marked 'factory sample')
  6. Something like Pat Metheny Group 'Imaginary Day' is a good test for a system, I find. Or 'Secret Story'.
  7. And 'Clickin' With Clax' even got to the top of the jazz charts over here when it came out, such was the clamour of the bearded jazz geeks to get hold of it. Came out ahead of Spyrogyra !
  8. Wile E Coyote Richard E Grant Student Grant
  9. Weather Report 'Forecast Tomorrow' set, CDs 2 and 3 and the DVD. Best $15 I have ever spent in my life.
  10. Conn - fucious he say.... Happy Birthday !
  11. The Berendt was bought by me back in 1977 too ! At around that time I also got that 'Modern Jazz - The Essential Records' paperback by Max Harrison, Alun Morgan et al. That was my favourite of that era. All good recommendations in that one.
  12. Happy Birthday
  13. Steve White Mad Man Mad Max Max Gedray Larry Adler Morton Fraser's Harmonica Gang Private Fraser Private Godfrey Mainwaring
  14. John Dankworth Orchestra 'What The Dickens' (Fontana, mono) Miles Davis 'Bitches Brew' (Sony/Columbia Reissue, 2LP). From the new 'deluxe' box. My 4th copy of this one.
  15. Bought that one too and still have it. It was one of the few jazz tomes of the time which had piccies of the original album covers (like rare Dootos, Blue Notes etc) that you could salivate over. The critical selections were generally very good and have withstood the test of time. As far as the Penguins are concerned, I prefer to get hold of the early editions with coverage of now OOP issues. The ones that haven't fallen apart at the seams (like my early editions) that is !
  16. Steve White Mad Man Mad Max
  17. Great stuff Flurin - A night to remember for you, for sure.
  18. Son of the Manse Gordon the Moron John Shuttleworth
  19. A valvo-philic and vinyl-tastic Happy Birthday, porcy !
  20. Indeed ! - although it was a repeat from the 'Jazz Britannia' season in the heady days of 2005. The music was consistently excellent. Nice to see rare TV solos by Johnny Scott, Duncan Lamont, Victor Feldman etc. And a very Hank Mobley sounding Ronnie Scott ! A shame though that they couldn't just broadcast the full half hour shows of the Tubby Hayes Big Band, Dankworth Orchestra shows and that intriguing George Lewis/Acker Bilk double bill. We live in wait. Beeb, get your act together with the archives - or maybe even put these shows up on the 'BBC Archive' website perhaps?
  21. Well, the 'Sir John Dankworth at the Beeb' compilation was definitely worth checking out. Some great stuff. 'African Waltz' performed by the Dankworth Orchestra at the Royal Variety Performance - 1961 (or was it 62?). Fantastic performance. I'll bet they were rattling their jewels up in the Royal Box. Wonder who was on African drums - Frank Holder? (looked like him) - or maybe Guy Warren. Equally fascinating was the snippet of the televised recording session for 'What The Dickens'. What a shame that they didn't play the whole broadcast of that programme. Wonder where that recording studio location on the film was. Lansdowne? Lots of good, early Kenny Wheeler featured on the programme too.
