  1. Stan Tracey Orchestra 'Seven Ages Of Man' (UK Columbia Lansdowne Series, stereo)
  2. One of the most enjoyable gigs I ever saw was Stanley Turrentine at Jazz Alley.
  3. I don't know who is the worse at the moment - the England team - or France ! Was he the coach? When the camera did close-ups I thought he was one of the spectators..
  4. This one has a real 'end of an era' feeling to it IMO. A superb session - but with a bit of a sad feel to it.
  5. Mike Garrick definitely meritted an OBE or a CBE. However, he's not as well known to the public at large as Catherine Zeta Jones so he just gets an MBE. Maybe next time they could throw one in for John Surman and upgrade Mike Westbrook to CBE? Also one for Kenny Wheeler under the 'Colonial Services' division perhaps?
  6. I was talking about viewings in UK pubs and clubs.
  7. Yeah - that affected all of the viewings in HD at the pubs and clubs. Us cheapskates viewing in non-HD at home were unaffected
  8. An un-deservidely obscure session - essential for all Wayne-ophiles. If I didn't have this on LP I'd spring for the CD.
  9. Bryan Spring Curtis Counce Cuurtis Speagler
  10. Thad Jones & Mel Lewis Orchestra Complete Solid State - LPs 1 and 2
  11. I stand by what I just said about Gerrard. A couple of his crosses into the box were superb - although (untypically) he did lose posession a couple of times near the end.
  12. Lukewarm performance by England tonight. That USA goal was a howler. Rooney looked in less than A1 form, although Gerrard did have a really good game. Good pace by the USA, a spirited performanbce by them. Ahem......(cough)... who is saying England are favourites? Not round here they're not.
  13. Big Bertha Hot Mamma Fat Judy
  14. Sad news. An early stalwart of the Gil Evans Orchestra, for sure.
  15. Marquis de Sade Creed Taylor Lalo Schifrin

  17. The informative booklet in the Mosaic box has some interesting details of the rehearsals and recording sessions for Solid State, also about Solid State's 'ethos'. It mentions that Phil Ramone and Manny Albam were involved and that rookie recording engineers used the rehearsals as training sessions. I have most of the sessions on original LP (some UK pressings, come US) and also the Mosaic on vinyl and I enjoy the sessions both with and without reverb. The reverb works best IMP on the original, first session.
  18. Isaac Hayes Edgar Hayes Will Hay
  19. Congratulations to pianist/composer Michael Garrick for his award of an MBE, announced in today's Queen's Birthday Honours List. Personally I would have said he merited at least an OBE. Still, it's recognition of a unique artist and a great contributor to UK jazz over his career. And at least this list of honours has no politicians and b(w)ankers on it, for once !
  20. The France/Uruguay game was pretty lukewarm. On the basis of this, neither team will get very far in the tournament. France should have nailed it after the guy was sent off but somehow the Uruguay defence held. I wonder if England/USA will fare any better tonight. Riots on the streets predicted if England lose..
