  1. Late but - Happy Birthday !
  2. That sucks!!! Glad to hear you're getting a refund, at least. That happened to me once with these guys in North America. In that case it was a fax machine. Just had one issue with UPS - Package from US to UK got returned to the US without me signing for it, then found to be dinged on return to the UK. A replacement was sent out and that arrived quickly and looks to be OK. A very mixed bag !
  3. Soft Machine 'Six' (UK CBS 2LP)
  4. 'Mel Lewis & Friends' (A&M Horizon). RIP - Hank Jones.
  5. My copy on NY USA mono vinyl cost a wallet-busting £2. One of the greatest Blue Note vinyl bargains ever ! (OK, vinyl less than outstanding but plays great and the sleeve is in fine nick).
  6. That's exactly the session that came to mind when I read this - and it's on my LP listening schedule tonight ('Way Way Out'). Sorry to hear this, always enjoyed his playing. RIP.
  7. The franchise keeps on a-rollin'..
  8. Obituary for Hank in today's Daily Telegraph: Hank Jones obit
  9. Looking forward to the performance at Bath in a couple of weeks time. It will be the first time I think that I've seen him (maybe I have but if so I forgot it !)
  10. Out of control in a Gordon Brown sort of way..
  11. RIP - A great musician and absolute gent and, has been already said - total class and elegance. And what a great life ! Just announced on the BBC main radio news as I was driving home. Not often that jazz even gets a mention on Beeb radio and a great and fitting testament to Hank that he was given a feature. I'll be sure to spin some of his vinyl tonight in recognition. Something that seems to be happening damn too often of late.
  12. Denny Zeitlin 'My Shining Hour - Live At The Trident' (Columbia 2-eye, mono)
  13. Various Artists 'Jazz West Coast Vol 4' (World Pacific, mono)
  14. Tubby Hayes Roy Castle Norris McWhirter
  15. BB King King Pleasure The Three Bips
  16. Grasella Oliphant 'The Grass Is Greener' (Atlantic blue/green, stereo)
  17. You can't drive far enough to see Sam Rivers. I mentioned it in another thread but when I saw him several years ago he chatted both about Andrew Hill and some of his Blue Note sessions whilst cleaning and packing up his horns (just watching that in itself was worth admission - meticulous) and signed the Mosaic booklet and a few LPs. A very nice person was my opinion. The gig was brilliant too and I made sure I checked out another of his other UK gigs later in the week. In recognition, I'll likely pre-order this set when it is available. It looks like they are normalising around the 'Scott' axis of early and swing era jazz meticulously remastered/presented and the 'Cuscuna' axis of the avant garde. Either way, I'm all for it as it's quality from each end. As long as it doesn't develop into a mouldy figg vs boppers bunfight.. :rsmile:
  18. Toshiko Akiyoshi Trio 'Toshiko Plays Billy Strayhorn' (Japanese Disco-mate) One of a slew of Japanese Toshiko LPs that I have to renew acquaintance with..
  19. Bob Dylan Dylan Thomas Dylan
  20. Aha - Know Calgary well but not that store. Must have closed years ago..
  21. Violet Carson Magenta de Vine Pinkie & Perky
  22. Was in Binghamton a few months ago - seemed to me a fairly peaceful and laid-back place and surely one of the more unlikely places in the US to encounter a murder. Nice town !
  23. Pat Martino 'El Hombre' (Prestige blue label, stereo). Cranked up at 12 o'clock.
