  1. Looks interesting. I only know his work with Peter Leitch.
  2. Amazingly, have never heard this before. Superb - and at less than £5 for the French CBS reissue, a bargain.
  3. Yet more sad news. I saw him as a youngster with John McLaughlin in that ‘Free Spirits’ trio, must have been around 1993. Not sure if I saw him with Martino’s group. Very talented, for sure. RIP.
  4. Spinning a few disks from my collection of Verve Elites Verve Elite - one of the truly great jazz reissue series.
  5. I’m pretty sure that concert at The Rainbow was broadcast on TV by the BBC and I remember seeing it circa 1975 at original transmission but for sure I don’t recall it ever being shown again since.
  6. Another spin for this Blue Note Classic release - sounding very good.
  7. ‘Brighter Day’s For You’ was recently reissued on 180g vinyl and I have been enjoying it of late. It got very good reviews ‘back in the day’ and always regret not buying it at the time. Her LPs always seemed to be elusive over here though.
  8. I’ve only been once but there were a bundle of Mosaics on overhead display - alas, too heavy. There was also a box of collectible LPs including fine Norgrans and early Blue Notes. At the prices on offer (not cheap at the time but a bargain now) I should have filled my boots and paid excess baggage. I remember that Tower branch, on Broadway I think, which used to be a Sam Goody’s. That place was like a black hole - you could get lost for hours and never get out.
  9. To be fair to them, some of them seem to like Wallen Bink so all is not lost.
  10. According to WB’s Facebook page, it would have included alternate takes of ‘Illusion’, ‘Dance With Death’ and ‘Soul Special’. Malcolm Addey was originally involved in the mastering, apparently.
  11. This is sad news, I was just listening to her new Steeplechase release the other day and also to BBCs repeat of her feature on ‘JtoZ’ selecting favourite tracks, from last January, She sounded in good form - RIP.
  12. With regards to ‘Passing Ships’, my understanding is that Wallen Bink in London were originally working on this one and planning to reissue it themselves. In the end, Blue Note took over the project. The original plan was for side 4 to include additional music. Hoffman Forums = ‘Moonies’ (not Keith..)
  13. Ronnie Barker Shep John Noakes
  14. The Tone Poet thread reads to me like a bunch of guys discovering Blue Note LPs for the first time and going into communal ecstasy over it, with ‘n’ positive feedback loops hard-wired in. Maybe I could relate to it 40 years ago but now it is a bore. All those pics with their TP ‘platter du jour’ cover propped up in display holder next to turntable - snore.... The thread is useful to find out what is coming up on the release schedule though.
  15. 1985 Holland Park concert by ‘Paraphernalia’. Great broadcast, excellently recorded.
  16. Marlow Football Club performance.
  17. Sounds like a good one and one I would like to read. I remember her featuring regularly at the Lighthouse, Hermosa Beach back in the late 90s. When in town I used to Sunday Brunch there but not sure I saw her. Ozzie Cadena was running the jazz events at the time.
  18. Saw them a few years after this was recorded - 1992 I think. Pretty hallowed venue too - Town Hall, NYC. Remember Marshall Royal on lead alto and also Richard Wyands on piano I think. Also on the bill - Buddy Tate All Stars with Urbie Green and Harry Edison plus Buck Clayton’s Band (without Buck but the rest of the lineup in situ). If only for a time machine to digest it again ! At the time, that concert seemed like an all-out last stand for a near vanishing era. No prizes for guessing what Jacquet played for the encore !
  19. Nearest I got was standing right next to John Lewis doing his solo piano / Paris tribute suite thing. Wonderful. Sadly, never saw Bags or the MJQ. I remember their mid-70s ‘retirement’. For a current day feel of how the MJQ sounded, Nat Steele’s ‘Tribute to the MJQ’ performances give a pretty good idea. Excellent player.
  20. A really good set. One of the 1969 tracks with Norma Winstone is almost prototype ‘Azimuth’.
  21. Best bet on CD is probably the Grachan Moncur III Mosaic Select.
  22. Still got about 300 of them. Surprised to come across a copy in the racks as it has now got to be more scarce. Priced at the ‘original’ price too, which was nice.
