  1. Quick count says I have 51 of them.. :blush2: Nice to see that Phil Seaman Verve LP on there. That one doesn't come up too often (recorded at the Bulls Head in Barnes).
  2. This one has eluded me to date but it's a beauty. And still readily available and in print too I think. Remember reading some very rave reviews of this Hayes/Shaw group with Rene McLean (in Melody Maker) back in 1977 when they appeared for a stint at Ronnie Scotts (same European tour). There was a bust up between Shaw and Hayes on stage though, I recall, which curtailed the gig. And the band... Have never heard Rene McLean sound as much like Jackie Mac as he does on this CD during his alto solos. No bad thing at all, under the circumstances. Bill - too bad about that Hubbard/Shaw 2CD set. You could pick it up for £10 or less some years ago and its worth scouring the second hand bins on the offchance of a copy. I always thought that these sessions were unfairly panned when the two LPs originally came out (still got them). Don Sickler did a pretty good transcription job on some of those Blue Note 'classics'.
  3. Jimmy Ponder 'Jump' (Muse). Big John Patton !
  4. Courtney Pine Courtney Cox Pippin
  5. Cue for me to recommend Mark Gardner's very good article on Curtis Counce's recordings in this month's 'Jazz Journal'. Those Counce albums are all great but I've got a particular soft spot for 'Exploring The Future' on Dootone. Worth it just for the cover art !
  6. Ditto. The print quality on that one would make a home-made Sun Ra Saturn LP look like something from Music Matters. All of those 70s Argo reissues by Cadet seem to have that problem. The only one I have which is reasonably legible (and in colour) is the 'Meet The Jazztet.' Ah well - they were cheap..
  7. And anything Clarke/Boland Big Band related by these guys.
  8. Another nice programme - good to hear that track with Konitz, which I've never heard before. Also, really must get hold of the 'News For Lulu' and 'More News For Lulu' albums. I would have to say that 'Blue Planet Man' remains my favourite BJP album recorded with Zorn.
  9. Ivanov Markov David Kossoff
  10. When I was up in Canada that's what the Social Insurance Card was used for.
  11. Some great second hand CDs: Helen Merrill 'You, The Night & The Music' (Verve Gitanes) Charlie Parker 'Confirmation - The Best of the Verve Years' (Verve doubletime 2CD) Mike Gibbs 'Tanglewood 63/Michael Gibbs' (Vocalion 2CD)
  12. Seems to be playing OK from here. Looking forward to this one.
  13. Tony Russell Ross Russell Dean Benedetti

  15. Cookie Monster Honey Monster (again ) Henry McGhee
  16. Great version of 'I'll Remember April' on there too.
  17. Yusef Lateef 'The Centaur and the Phoenix' (Riverside, DG stereo). Back cover notes by Christiern.

  20. I can remember seeing a Tal Farlow Norgran LP in that 'Hen's Teeth' rack at Shaftesbury Ave back in the 90s. Lots of dosh even then..
  21. Klaus Kinski Natassia Kinski Tess Durbeyfield
  22. I thought the 'Rare as Hen's Teeth' selection was pretty pricey - but there again it always was. OK, there was a Roswell Rudd 'America' French LP but at £50? I'll stick with my 'Free America' CD. The recession must be hitting London as I've had no problem booking a couple of weeks accomodation there this week for later in the month. Damn good day rates for London, better than for at least 10 years. That's the positive side of this whole thing.
  23. Ray ( of 'Rays Jazz' ) was a big cricket fan too and you would have been just as likely to hear the radio on in his shop. Must be a connection between jazz and cricket. Probably, as my wife says, hours of boredom interrupted by a few moments of excitement! I'm sure I remember listening in to 'Test Match Special' in the first Mole shop too ! I think I read somewhere (Jim Godbolt's book I think) that Ray was a regular in the 'Jazzers XI' that included at least one County-level player in its ranks.

  25. One of my favourite Lee Morgan/Clifford Jordan sessions:
