  1. I mentioned this thread to her in a conversation we had today. She was very appreciative, and assured me that she'd be reading it. Yeah ! Thank you very much Cindy for all the great help, if you are reading this. Hugely appreciated !
  2. Enjoy ! Certainly glad I got the Pearson, that one holds together as a coherent set very well.
  3. A real loss to Mosaic as Cindy has has represented them brilliantly over the years. The very best wishes to Cindy !

    Red Rodney

Saw him in Toronto with a local group in 1990 (Top O' The Senator) and he was excellent. Fiery and swinging - a real privilege to catch him in performance.
  5. That's where it came from, Yves. Mosaic had sold out and I resorted to "Plan B". Glad I did ! And I'm flying out there tomorrow and it's 25-26C and clear skies..
  6. The local posties must have a grievance ! My latest sets have arrived OK - thankfully. Lou Donaldson from deepest Italy must have had a risk factor 10 but it arrived pristine. The box for the HRS set was punctured though (and I noticed that the Mosaic packaging was not as bomb-resistant as usual). This morning - another spin for CD1 of the Quincy Jones set. Me likes :rsmile:
  7. You mean 'English' muffins?
  8. Breakfast is good Mosaic listening time !
  9. It was listening to a John Lewis solo recital in person (stood next to the piano) that brought home to me just what a civilised, class act he was. Until then, I too had taken the MJQ and Lewis's playing in the unit for granted. One could also see that he was thoroughly enjoying playing the recital too, in his quiet way. His presence on the scene (along with all of the other MJQ members including Kenny Clarke) is most definitely missed.
  10. So's the Getz/Clarke/Boland :rsmile:
  11. Yeah, that one and 'Space' are both really nice. Is it me or is there a hint of 60s psychadelia about these MJQ recordings for Apple? Whatever it is, the sound on these LPs is very appealing. Will have to dig them out..
  12. What is the full price for the book? At £0.6 to the Euro I might have gone for it but at over £0.9 to the Euro it's less attractive. Any recommendations?
  13. I've still got a Lene Lovich single on Stiff Records. And some Plastic Bertrand.
  14. Yeah, they had a full page advertisement every month. It was quite a sizeable store and the biggest in Devon/Cornwall. I lived for some time in Plymouth so it was my regular source of LPs (other than the local 'Our Price').
  15. Miles Dolphy Woody Shaw Everything by Thad & Mel 60s/70s British Jazz Just about everything on Mosaic Just about everything on Blue Note

  17. I have a 45rpm with WW2 British and German aircraft sounds in dogfight somewhere ! :rsmile:
  18. The only place I remember in Birmingham was going back 30 years ago - not exactly sure where it was, it might have been near the old Bull Ring. It specialised in big band jazz in particular and was a longish, narrow shop. The first great shop I remember was 'Woods' in Bradford, Yorkshire. First time I went in there they had a CBS display stand advertising electric Miles with multiple copies of Bitches Brew, Big Fun, Get Up With It and On The Corner in the stand. That was an eye-opener ! Anyone remember 'Peter Russells Hot Record Store' down in Plymouth? They were a jazz specialist and very strong on traditional jazz, although they did stock the modern stuff. The also had a hi-fi section to the shop. I've got the feeling that the guy who worked there behind the counter might have played trumpet in one of Ronnie Scott's earliest bop groups.
  19. I remember that - got a couple of Verve Elites on that deal. They were still cheaper at most places over in the US though. Ah, but in those days you had to GO to the US. No internet, you see (God, I feel old). Yeah - and it was a revelation to see how cheap they were. Toronto Sam The Record Man was the place that I first 'filled my boots' (and being resident there were no import restrictions ). Even with that damned Ontario sales tax it was still cheaper.
  20. I'll be in Trieste, Italy on business next week. Anyone know of any jazz places in town? Also - any good jazz vinyl outlets recommendable? The only connection I can think of with jazz for Trieste is that Enrico Rava hails from there. Other than that, I'm totally in the dark. Any suggestions welcome - both jazz and sightseeing suggestions too ! (not that I'll have much time but you never know..)

  22. Beavis and Butthead Blair and Brown Bush and Cheney
  23. CD2 of the Duke P Select. Apart from 'Merry Ole Soul' I already had all of this on LP or Rare Groove CDs but it's really nice to have it all collated and convenient for the I-pod. A very enjoyable set.
  24. I just bought Michael Cuscuna's mint JPN PJ Fischer LPs yesterday on eBay for 12.99 a pop. It's only a slice of the pie for this set........but a sweet one! Now why didn't I think of this approach? From 'the horse's mouth', no less !
