Yeah - Can be ordered via the trunk site. From what I'm hearing it's selling pretty fast, so few copies are likely to hit the shops. Wish I could hear it at 45rpm though ! Yeah, none are being allowed to the US distributor for Trunk, because I tried to order it through a shop here. Looks like I had/have a drive belt tension issue - have got it to play at 45rpm and it's damn good. Messengers-ish afro instrumental number on side 1, vocal track and straight-ahead instrumental number on side 2. Almost like a Tempo EP. Short but sweet !

Jazz CD sales down by 80% since 2001!
sidewinder replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Some interesting comments in the Blue Note article in this month's 'Jazzwise' in the interview with Bruce Lundvall and Michael Cuscuna. It mentions that the 100+ RVGs that have recently been made OOP will be replaced by downloads via a new 'souped up' Blue Note site (and no doubt the whole catalogue will eventually be available on there). Blue Note are also dabbling/testing the waters with CD/LP combined packages at $20 for what seems to be a mainly student fraternity that likes to have a vinyl copy as well as the convenience of the CD. Mosaic's new foray back into LPs was also mentioned by Michael Cuscuna - although these are intended to be full album releases and not equivalents of the CD boxes. For example, for the forthcoming Ahmad Jamal Argo it looks like the LP set will be a reduced offering with a bundling of the key LPs, whereas the CD set will be the full blown 'complete' package. -

Yeah - 'Music Matters' is my local shop. Thank goodness some things in life haven't changed ! -
Cedar should be designated as a US national asset. So professional - and the playing so swinging !

Yet that Stan Getz Quartet show with Gary Burton from the LSE was broadcast recently on BBC4 - previously no shows from that series were thought to survive. I wonder if there are any others that they uncovered, or whether that particular show was just a quirk.

Today's experience in a large English town is getting to be typical I think. HMV of no use whatsoever - not even a jazz section for CDs, just lumped in with Easy Listening/Folk/Word etc and absolutely nothing worth having. HMV is now strictly for the X-Box and Blue-Ray fraternity. RIP.. Then down the road a Classical place with nice jazz selection but mainly second hand. Actual stuff you would want to buy - Hatology, Blue Note, Verve, DIW etc. The second hand places are now 'where the action is' - always was for vinyl but getting more so (excluding a few honourable exceptions) for CDs. -
Some great finds today s/h - £5 each. 'Quincy Jones - Swiss Radio Days Vol 1' (TCB) - Thank you King Ubu for the prompt on this series. Fabulous ! Now I'll have to find the rest of the series.. Jimmy Smith 'The Master' (Toshiba) - with Kenny Burrell from 1993 A couple of Hatology Ellery Eskelins - 'Ten' and 'Vanishing Point'

Many of them were 'officially' available on VHS about 12 or so years ago in the UK - licensed from the Beeb. A few have been issued on DVD in Andorra through 'Improv-Jazz' and their ilk but I'm not sure how legit these are. Occasionally, some of the shows are broadcast by the BBC. Re: the Rollins - it won't be a 'Jazz 625' as that series was broadcast in B&W in 1964 and 1965 only. If it's the show when Rollins comes out of his taxi on Frith St playing wild tenor, goes through the main entrance to the club and then segues into the band I think I might have caught it when it was originally broadcast but have never seen it since. It certainly left a lasting impression with me ! Possibly part of BBC2's 'In Concert' series - but definitely not 'Jazz 625'. Sadly, quite a few of the original 'Jazz 625's' were erased in the 1970s to free up blank tape for game shows etc. I'm sure I've not seen this, love too see it televised if it still exists. Definitely saw it John - but my hunch is that it will have been wiped by the Beeb. Around the same time there was also a show about Ginger Baker playing drums in Africa that I also remember seeing.

Happy Birthday - wherever you are ! -
It WILL be re-released on LPs by Pure Pleasure Records in England. Thanks for the info, Laurie. Is there some reason why it's only getting a vinyl release since I'm sure that will mean a far smaller audience for what is a terrific recording. BTW I saw him live at Ronnie Scott's on the same tour and he was on fire; a really memorable occasion. Great news ! Only just picked up the original Mole LP just the other day. A fine session and strongly recommended, along with the 'True Blue'. Only sorry I missed that particular Art engagement in Scotts. Suspect I was away from town those particular weeks - eternal regret. I did see the lovely, albeit short cameo at the RFH 'Bird' show though. As mentioned, Art was definitely on fire around this time. Brought the house down at the RFH.

This morning's spins: Lee Morgan 'All That Jazz' (UK DJM, 2LP). 'Both/And' live material from 1972, available on CD from Fresh Sounds. I think I prefer the vinyl sound quality of this bootleg. Fine music, of course. Various artists - 'Black California' (Savoy Reissue series, 2LP). Great opportunity to hear early Dolphy with the Roy Porter Big Band.

Check out the Pat Martino documentary on DVD - he drives past Willis's old NYC pad, recognises the building and reminisces about those times. -

and damn - the Curse of the Voodoo has struck as the music comes out as a 16rpm afro dirge. Suspect that my deck power supply might have been connected up with a crossed wire after the recent upgrade. Back to store ! Serves me right for insulting Swedish hippies

They forgot the commercial break every 3 mins.. -
'Ronnie Scott Presents - George Coleman 'Live' (Pye, stereo). From 1979 - George in majesterial form. Saw him at the same venue in 1980 and he was equally good.

The Inner Sleeve
sidewinder replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Thankfully they never made it onto the UK 'Inner Sleeves' (at least I think so). The French stuff was as 'International' as it got (but maybe Thijs van Lier and Focus got a look in). Plus the US schlockmeisters, folk, country and prog-rockists, of course. -
