  2. Ashes Commentary Rivetting stuff. After the near capitulation of the last Test Match it's quite a turn around. Could be a major upset.

  4. Classic !
  5. Always thought the title track went like mad on that one and was in a different class from the other tracks. Someone - Higgins, I think - is making a lot of "gone" noises on that one. Notice it had a different recording date from the others. Hmm - not thought of that one before. The title track has significantly more 'ooomph' than the rest of the session, although I like it on the whole. Can't go wrong with Cedar Walton and Billy Higgins stokin' the fires. Fathead Newman also fits in very well in a Morgan group IMO. Now spinning Teddy Edwards & Howard McGhee 'Together Again' (Contemporary DG stereo)
  6. After seeing them live a couple of times on Evans's last Europe tour around the time of these recordings and sitting about 8 ft from Mr Johnson, I can guarantee that it was a conventional upright bass.

  9. Certainly remember seeing him a fair bit on the vintage Vietnam news footage that made it onto our TV in the 60s. A news anchor icon - RIP.

  12. Here Watch it for the music... and more importantly, watch it for Diana Rigg. Not forgetting Johnson's theme for the follow-on 'New Avengers' series. With the Kukri-yielding Joanna Lumley taking over from Rigg. Laurie Johnson of course has delved into jazz from time to time. He recorded the third-streamish 'Synthesis' with a stellar band inc. Tubby Hayes, Kenny Wheeler and Joe Harriott !
  13. Suprised no-one has mentioned this..
  14. Typical Sun BS. Waste of paper pulp and electrons.
  15. I guess I'm lucky that I can still happily spin jazz LPs and enjoy the listen and get new things from it, something I've been doing decades ago since I was 14 or 15 and first got the bug. I started off as a modernist only but in recent years have been reverting a bit to my 'inner traditionalist'. The only time I just can't listen to any jazz is when I'm under the weather with a bug, and like Clifford mentioned, I find that any kind of sound (even cars or aircraft outside) then becomes a real problem. Occasionally after a binge of listening or several days at a Jazz Festival over-saturation fatigue kicks in - good thing then to take a bit of a break and ease yourself back into the listening gradually. One things for sure - will never tire of spinning LPs on Blue Note/Savoy/Impulse/Prestige/Mosaic etc. Even from my zimmer frame.

  17. I have a DVD film of him somewhere shaking hands and chatting with Buddy Rich, from the front of the audience at a Rich London 'Talk of the Town' show around 1969 !

  19. What a damn shame. Way too young.
  20. Yes, quite big news over here. Quite a few people from here have now used that Digitas clinic to end their lives (illegal in the UK but legal in Switzerland).
