Anyone who went to UK cinemas in the 70s will recognise this one immediately. The 'Pearl and Dean' advertising trailer. Usually followed by cheapo adverts for flock wall-papered Indian tandoori restaurants and dodgy 2nd hand car dealers... One of the UK Maynard LPs has an arrangement by Mansfield that lifts very heavily from this theme.

Indeed. I'm showing my age a bit here but I can recollect a whole show dedicated to those Direct Cut disks in that timeframe. I think he played offerings by the LA4 ('Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte' - I have that one), quite possibly Joe Sample ('The Trio') and possibly Rob McConnell Boss Brass but I could be wrong. How's that for memory !

General rule seems to be - if the Met Office make an announcement, inverse it and you'll then get the actuality. And these guys actually get paid for the tosh they put out ?! August not looking good...

Bride of Chucky?

I used to have one. Bose ! Have a Miles 'Bitches Brew' quadraphonic 2LP set. That one is quite a laugh when the trumpet phases in and out of the various speakers. Hearing it in stereo is a bit of a shortfall though. The peak of the cartridge market was when they were available as an option on music centres from Sanyo etc. as an alternative to the new fangles musicassette. Top of the line was the quadraphonic option of course. Peak of the market 1972-74. I've also got a good number of Direct Cut/Direct-To-Disk LPs. The sound on these is superb - they were well tailored to jazz as the recording had to be done in one continuous session, no breaks I believe. Lots of good things on Japanese East Wind in particular - Cedar Walton 'The Pentagon' and 'Pitt Inn' among the best.

Let's hope it aint so but if it is, RIP for another of the true greats. He was one of the last surviving links to that early pioneering generation of modernists. Glad I got to see his 'Living Time' Orchestra at least.

Just picked up the Vol 1 'Black California' in near mint, to add to Vol 2 ! The Savoy 2LP reissue series is the greatest.

No suprise there. Now an almost jazz-free zone. And - as you say - a damn expensive one at that.

Now there must be a market for one of those with a built-in deck, amp and wall speakers. Double insulated reinforced wiring with 32ms RCDs required though...

I've always liked 'Amandla, ever since it first came out. A stronger album IMO than the much more lauded 'Tutu'.

How is that LP? Very good. Side 1 is clasic Kenny Wheeler orchestral - could have equally been played with his ownUK orchestra. Side 2 a bit more free form - Misha Mengelberg, again quite distinctive of his style. Nicely played and great sound. Do a search on Trunk Records and you'll find the site. Go to 'Ye Olde Trunkeshoppe' for the EP. Viewer discretion advised for the 'Derek's Dirty Dishes' area.

No wonder students end their courses in such debt! I'm materialist enough to want to own a copy of the music I play; but the idea of buying it in two formats doesn't compute in my brain. Can't see such a 'boutique' approach lasting long. Yeah - doesn't jibe at all either with my own student experience - by and large limited to scouring the £2 deletions/sale/cutout rack whilst the £10+ King/Toshiba Blue Note import rack at Mole remained tantalisingly out of reach ! That and living on baked beans and sausages...

I'm waiting for a bunch to arrive via various amazon.fr marketplace sellers - those were the best prizes (w/shipping) for me. I can highly recommend the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Mulligan CJB, and Louis Hayes/Woody Shaw for starters. The Don Redman may be a bit weak (albeit the great line-up it has), but I don't think there's a real clinker in the series (But I'm still waiting for the two Peterson/Fitzgerald/JATP and the two Hamptons, as well as the Coleman Hawkins... and I still have a couple of gaps). Thanks flurin - I'll keep an eye open for the Jones/Lewis (can't believe I haven't already seen/got that one) and the Shaw/Hayes, for sure. The Quincy Jones is a keeper !
