  1. Happy Birthday Mr B. Bop !
  2. Yeah, I had the same reaction with my 'Bitches Brew' (Ray Conniff, Mirielle Mathieau etc.)
  3. I've got tons of these 'Inner Sleeves' from the early 1970s. I think they stopped doing them around 1975. My Miles 2LP sets, Soft Machines, Don Ellis twofers etc. all have them. Always found them quite an interesting read. Interesting to see who they were promoting at the time - Johnny and Edgar Winter, Johnny Mathis, Soft Machine, Janis Ian etc.
  4. Gotta mention 'Ben's Collectors Records' in Guildford, UK for anyone who happens to be visiting there. Ben's a great guy, knows his jazz and has a nice used LP selection. He also stocks pretty well the whole of Tony Williams' Spotlite catalogue on CD as well of some of it on vinyl.
  5. Seconded ! Happy Birthday, Dmitry !
  6. Seconded. Big for 'El Camino (The Road)' and 'Strut' from his RCA Novus sides. Particularly 'El Camino', which is a very strong session. As mentioned, some very nice straight-ahead Sam Rivers on those disks.
  7. There's actually TV film footage around of Perkinson in Max Roach's group with Abbey Lincoln from '64 doing a performance of 'Freedom Now'.
  8. Saw Albany playing an upright piano in an upstairs room in a pub in Manchester in the 1970s during a tour organized by Tony Williams of Spotlite records. Albany looked in bad shape physically, which wasn't surprising in view of his misfortunes. Have some lovely Albany with Lester in my collection. Yes, I remember 'Jazz Journal' doing a writeup at the time of that Joe Albany tour, with at least one interview article. Will have to dig it out. Lots of good stuff on Tony William's Spotlite label from around that time. This particular LP is apparently one of the last copies from his surplus LP stock.
  9. Always thought the title track went like mad on that one and was in a different class from the other tracks. Someone - Higgins, I think - is making a lot of "gone" noises on that one. Notice it had a different recording date from the others. Thanks for reminding me aboout this one Bill and Bob. Disposed of the vinyl years ago but it's a fine session with Fathead being something of a BN wild card. The cds second session withe the three horn front line has some nice sounds too. Higgins is certainly 'gone' on Sonic Boom. Looks like you've got the RVG edition, Bob. Mine's a Japanese import with only six tracks, all by the quintet, recorded 28 April 1967, except for "Sonic Boom" recorded April 14. It's the King Japanese vinyl, Bill. I also have a 'Sonic Boom' Conn CD and a 'Rainbow series' LP so I'm well covered on this title. Have you heard the Mosaic single CD of this one, John? They got the actual live recording.
  10. Best Wishes from me !
  11. Elmo Hope 'Memorial Album' (Prestige, white label test pressing ). 'Van Gelder' in the wax but electronically rechanneled stereo.
  12. Incidentally, has anyone ever come across this 'Temple' label before? It's heavy vinyl with black label and DG - LP sleeve is 'brown paper bag' shade card with 'Bebop Highlights' on the cover and typed script with the band lineup. Otherwise no further details, no reverse sleeve notes. Almost like a transcription disk or a posh back street bootleg. Weird !
  13. Yeah. Picked up a 'few' things yesterday :rsmile: . Gotta take the chance to spin 'em when you get it.
  14. Parker/Gillespie/Powell/Bauer/Tristano 'Bebop Highlights' (Temple) Joe Albany 'Proto-Bopper' (Spotlite)
  15. Duke Jordan/Cecil Payne 'The Murray Hill Caper' (Spotlite) Duke Ellington Orchestra 'At The Bal-Masque' (Columbia 6-eye, mono)
  16. Kathy Stobart Eddie Stobart 10 4 Rubber Duck
  17. Damn ! Ah well.... Will pick it up eventually. Thanks for the thought anyway.
  18. I wish they would "find" some Stuff Smith sets ! I'll go one further and strongly recommend it.
  19. Just about to watch the highlights on Channel 5. Flintoff seems to have out-done himself. Great news - I thought we would be in for another England capitulation today. No dought the Aussies will be fired up for the next match !
  20. Art Blakey Big Band 'Live at Montreux and Northsea' (Timeless) 'Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers' (JVC/Victor) -with Carlos Garnett and Joanne Brackeen (1972 band).
  21. Yes - not my favourite albums by Silver but that vocal is very effective.
  22. Nice to hear ! Could go either way today I think. England definitely let it slip in the later sessions yesterday.
  23. The only thing that can potentially scupper this now is.... the weather.
  24. Ponting bowled out - crucial wicket.
