  1. Don't know the album, but the music looks very interesting! It's basically a reissue of the Wardell Gray Memorial Album Vols 1 and 2. Exceptional music !
  2. Dexter Gordon 'Homecoming' (UK CBS 2LP)
  3. Oh for the days when the likes of RCA Novus were publicising great jazz artists such as Hilton. Now there's one guy who's very much missed on the scene. Great stuff, keep 'em coming Chris
  4. Wardell Gray 'Central Avenue' (UK Prestige 2LP, mono)
  5. Don't have any 78s I'm afraid - or the means to play them. I'm with Brownie on this one.
  6. Cedar Walton 'Eastern Rebellion II' (Timesless). Remember seeing this band, back in the day.
  7. Have a Happy Blue-Notein' Birthday ! 40 eh? All downhill from hereon in.
  8. Clarke/Boland Big Band 'Our Kinda Strauss' (Rearward/Schema 2LP). Includes the 'Swing Waltz Swing' material plus other walz stuff. Wayne Shorter 'Night Dreamer' (BN NY USA mono) McCoy Tyner 'Expansions' (BN Liberty blue/white stereo)
  9. Magic word 'Atomic Records'
  10. And Roswell Rudd's notes on Nichols in the 'Third World' twofer and the Mosaic booklet are essential reading on this artist.
  11. Nice to see that ebay can still deliver good deals occasionally ! Clarke/Boland Big Band 'Fellini 712' (French MPS, stereo). One of their best, for sure !
  12. Jason King?
  13. Thanks for the heads up. This is a show I really do need to check out (along with many others already archived).
  14. I've got a Japanese Toshiba of that one. Good find at $15 ! Italian equivalent of Oxfam?
  15. This is simply one killer badass album, every bit as groovy as the cover would suggest. Got this in budget bin at 3rd Street Jazz in Philly back in the early 80s when so many BNs were cutouts. "Son of Ice Bag" rocks, blows away Hugh Masakela's original. Absolutely. 'Son Of Ice Bag' smokes, with very good Lee Morgan. In fact the whole of side 1 is brilliant. Side 2 not quite so good but it's still a 'killin' album. Lonnie's Blue Notes are all very good IMO (I've started to really like 'Drives'). And the DMM pressing of this one is fine as long as the volume is cranked up past 12.
  16. Lonnie Smith 'Think !' (BN Manhattan 80s pressing, DMM Ron McMaster transfer). Suprisingly good under the circumstances !
  17. Art Blakey 'Gypsy Folk Tales' (Pye/Roulette stereo)
  18. Doesn't Roger come from eastern England? Latest news is that the bits have ben sent to the German lab for analysis: Report I put the light stories down to the local fireworks display. It's possible though that the MoD were test flying development UAVs over the Lincolnshire ranges. If it had hit the turbine though we'd have a pile of bits in the locality so that theory is a non-sterter. Low temperature effects and fatigue fracture odds-on bet.
  19. Another spin for Pat Martino 'Strings' (Prestige blue label, stereo)
  20. Have a good one !
  21. Some interesting comments and good suggestions there, Ubu. I'm glad you like the Bill Russo and yes, some of the voicings are a bit Gil Evans-ish. I'm reminded also of Kenny Wheeler's orchestration style and of course - I'm sure he was also strongly influenced by Russo (indede he is in the lineup on 'Stonehenge'). Interesting suggestion of Paul Quinichette on track 3 - certainly not inconceivable that it could have been him.
  22. Never liked her - no real organ sound there, all too clean (and I don't dig her electronic extensions of the organ) - sorry. Ok, now on to disc 2... and hopefully soon on to BFT #61 as well! Wow - I thought she was pretty big in Germany/Austria/Switzerland !
  23. My sentiments exactly. Nice one for getting the Ammons and identifying Farmer, Shaw and Henderson !
  24. Glad you enjoyed it !
