  1. CJRT - that's it ! I think I also caught you introducing and recording Dave McMurdo's Orchestra at the Ontario Science Centre, Ted (not entirely sure but I think that was the place). Another great night of music - the band included Don Englert and Sam Noto I think. The jazz scene in Toronto in the late 80s was great ! What I remember about the Henderson gig, as well as the fine Canadian backing group was the absolutely unique sound that Henderson got out of his sax. Not at all a big sound and almost 'hollow', never heard anyone play like that. That sax of his had just about the most tarnished lacquer of any Selmer I've ever seen. No doubt it was the same instrument he used on his great Blue Notes. The venue was 'Top O The Senator' by the way (didn't last long, unfortunately).
  2. and you get the pen scribble marks for free !
  3. John Surman 'Westering Home' (Island)
  4. He was one of the favourites there, and at the Montreal Bistro, the follow-up club. I recorded him many times in both places, and it was always a pleasure. I recall a particularly burning session with Dave Young on bass and the late Jerry Fuller on drums...should have been issued! I remember seeing you in the Cafe on one occasion Ted, recording someone for CBC Radio I think - it might have been Sir Charles Thompson or even Cedar. Can't quite recall who it was. I never knew it in the 'Montreal Bistro' days but I recall the Cafe as a very pleasant club, with excellent food. Best memory I have there is standing right next to John Lewis during a solo piano recital when the club was pretty full to capacity. It was amazing watching him from right over the keyboard ! Talking of Dave Young and Jerry Fuller - I've got the feeling they were backing Joe Henderson on the time I caught him in Toronto. Excellent team.
  5. Yeah, come to think of it I remember Dusty having that one for sale. Well snagged !

Is it really 17 years ago? Wow ! I remember being very shocked at the time I heard this news on a car radio - I knew he had been admitted to hospital and was very ill but there had been so many previous recoveries from bouts of pneumonia etc. that you just assumed he would recover. I don't think the news really sunk in for a long time. Was spinning 'Dark Magus' last night and was thinking that it's mind-blowing that this was the same guy who recorded with Parker and did 'Birth of the Cool'.
  7. Thanks - I'll look out for them. Recall seeing Cedar play once in Toronto at the old Cafe des Copains. Great night !
  8. Cool. Will be spinning a Dave Young CD on that label with Cedar Walton a bit later. Now up:- Joe Henderson 'Mode For Joe' (BN NY USA mono)
  9. Joe Henderson 'Our Thing' (BN NY USA mono). Fantastic !
  10. Pat Metheny 'Secret Story' (Geffen, 2LP). So far the backup phono sounds OK...
  11. Yeah - there must be something in the water at the moment. At first I thought it was the cartridge as I'd been messing around with tracking and I had visions of yet more expensive return deliveries to Japan ( ) - at least this one is in warranty and it's down the road to Salisbury. Such is life !
  12. Sad news - and one of the giants of the old film world. A class act, for sure. And a dignified guy too. Actually saw him on one occasion in an open top pink cadillac with Joanne Woodward. I'd sneaked in to Bel Air with my rental car doing the tourist thing (not sure how I managed it) and they were coming down the hill past me. On the way to Santa Monica/Malibu by the looks of it for a nice Sunday afternoon drive - they both looked extremely happy. RIP Mr Newman.
  13. At present - nothing. My phono stage has failed. Postscript - switched back to internal boards. As one channel has failed it was either switch to the old boards or switch the phono to mono. Hey porcy - I can play mono but I can't play stereo !
  14. Yeah, totally agree. I won't hear a bad word said about Mosaic either.
  15. My copy of the BGO CDs just arrived in the mail and I'm giving it a spin. They did a great job cleaning up the transfer for 'Deep Dark Blue Centre', as good as I could have hoped, really. I see that you have a letter in to 'Jazzwise' this month, Roger, on the subject of lack of Alan Skidmore 'TCB' on CD . I wonder if Universal still has the masters to that one? Of course, there is always the vinyl route. Not sure if it's still there but Ray's Jazz had a copy in their 'Rare as Hen's Teeth' rack a little while back. A nice copy too, by the look of it.
  16. I must admit, I've found a couple of those Oscar Peterson trio deep-groove Clefs in the racks over here for about £5 each. They took a bit of cleaning though. Lucky find.
  17. We are talking about our Dear and Beloved Mosaic here, right?..
  18. I have a dark blue copy of the 'Evolution' too and agree that the sound on this one is excellent. Dark blues with 'Van Gelder' usually = Good.
  19. Given your comment about "the UK or Europe", I assume Tesco won't ship to the US? It's probably OK to the US - not sure what their shipping charges would be though.

  21. For anyone in the UK or Europe interested in the Patton box, Tesco are doing it for £27.99. Tesco Patton Heck, if I order this I will even get some Tesco Points too.
  22. Just got my Ayler box. Wow ! At a time of extortionate energy prices and hyper-taxes it is nice to know that you can still get great deals like this for £28. Revenant have even out-done Mosaic with this set - it is a work of art. It will be a learning experience for me too as I don't have very much Ayler but seeing the documentary film got me curious. The extras in the box are fantastic too. The Ayler book is very professionally done with some very good essays by the likes of Val Wilmer and nice to see some of Guy's (Brownie) pictures in there too. I'll have to check out that Patton box if it's as well produced as this one.

  24. They should have some good pubs around there too: http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/867/ Could be a nice trip. And handier for us than the Organissimo Annual Chicago Convention Yes, I would be in, let's prepare for a Yurpean convention! They have a Carnival Night coming up quite soon. Lots of motorised floats. Highlight of the year !
