Whether or not you go for the Music Matters 45 rpm sets likely has a lot to do with the quality of your playback systems. In my case, the vinyl side is quite a bit better than the CD side, so the payback is fairly obvious. On the MM sets I like the cover art Francis Wolf photos too. Turning the LPs every 10 mins is a pain in the ass though.

"Jazz seen" is no longer available, i think it's out of print. Check the second hand book shops. But "jazz life" (including the 1500 $ edition !) is available on Amazon.com Sorry to hear the news about Bill Claxton - Channel 4 news tonight over here had a nice little tribute to him, wish I could have recorded it. Just dug out my copy of 'Jazz Seen' - bought direct from Bill and signed by him in 1999. He was a very nice guy as I recall, a delight to meet, very un-pretentious. RIP.

This was one of 32jazz' best reissues, in my humble opinion! Agreed ! And the second best was the other Woody twofer with 'Cassandranite' and 'Love Dance'.

How about this one? Not a bad album - but by the incredibly high standards of McLean and Moncur in the 1960s it doesn't live up to the very high expectations IMO. No fireworks - a misfire..

I actually spoke to John Koenig once about that 'Blackstone Legacy' session and he mentioned that Shaw was 'a bit lubricated' at that session and that it was a tough one to complete. All a bit rushed, I believe. I loke both albums by the way - but they are a little chaotic in parts.

That's a great little interview. It would be great if Mosaic are planning on reissuing 'Iron Men', although 32 Jazz did include it on one of their compilations (I think it was 'Two More Pieces Of The Puzzle' - paired with 'The Woody Shaw Concert Ensemble', an equally brilliant performance). Maybe some bonus tracks this time? Nice to hear Mr Braxton speak with such affection about Woody.

It's the only Reuben Wilson LP I've flogged because I thought it was crap. But I've made many mistakes in the past and this might be one. In the light of Mike and Shawn's comments, I'll try this again. MG I like it ! Definitely worth picking up the Reuben Wilson - and the sound on the CD reissue is really outstanding. I can sort of hear the similarity in style with 'Moon Rappin' that SS mentions. Definite 1971 groove..

Yep - a winner from the first note. I don't have any of this material so it is a bit of a revelation. 'Hot Jazz On Blue Note' for sure. Sound is pretty good too ! I've been reading Selections from the Gutter: Portraits from the Jazz Record, edited by Art Hodes and Chadwick Hansen. This makes an excellent accompaniment to the Hodes Mosaic. His stories of early Chicago scene are priceless, and his straightforward prose makes it all the more vivid. Thanks ! I'll look out for it.

Crikey ! Sounds very much like Orkney and the Shetland Islands (not suprisingly in view of the common Norse ancestry) - although I think they add lamb to the menu on occasions. And probably deep-fried mars bars .
