  1. Last night - Ingrid Laubrock's new group 'Sleep Thief' with Liam Noble and Tom Rainey, at the Birmingham Conservatoire. The music covered quite a large spread - very quiet and meditative in spots to Ayleresque fury a few minutes later. Another interesting departure by this fascinating artist.
  2. Charles Mingus 'Pre-Bird' (Mercury DG mono, white label promo)
  3. Yet more sad news. RIP Mr McKenna.
  4. James May Countess Of May Maggie May
  5. Time to buy me a pulp mill to fund the vinyl.

  9. Miles Davis 'We Want Miles' (UK CBS 2LP) Blue Mitchell 'Bantu Village' (BN Liberty blue/white stereo)
  10. Shouldn't be any more than $100 in near mint, I would have thought. Wish I'd bought that VG+ copy. That Danish Debut Dolphy is barmy...
  11. I think I've got this one on a UK Black Lion LP from the 1980s. Will have to check.
  12. Hope so. I'd hate to be the one who blew the whole thing apart..
  13. Actually, I bought a couple of them that are gazing at me right now from the wall: Thelonious Monk and Thad Jones. Yeah, likewise. I got a Mobley 'Turnaround', Melvin Lastie 'Aligator' , Hubbard 'Goin' Up' and an Art Farmer 'Stylings of Silver' from their half-price 'seconds' deal which I subsequently framed. Shortly after this they seemed to stop doing exports of these photos (I guess some went AWOL). Those were the days !
  14. email them and ask to have one of the sets put aside, Mike.

    Miles

No kidding ! Those Kix tracks on 'We Want Miles' are pretty impressive by any standard and Miles was definitely 'up for it'. Teo also did a great job on that particular 2LP set capturing the dynamism. Also, that bit in Chris's interview about Miles listening to the band from the wings with great concentration certainly jibes with my experience of seeing him live at close quarters. Even very late in his career.
  19. Jimmy Smith 'Crazy Baby' (BN 47W63rd mono, DG side 1)
  20. Thanks Brownie ! Looks like another one for the shopping list. Not that I would have personally selected Donald Byrd 'Caricatures' .
  21. "Jazz seen" is no longer available, i think it's out of print. Check the second hand book shops. But "jazz life" (including the 1500 $ edition !) is available on Amazon.com It's recently been reissued by Taschen in a very slightly smaller (still pretty big) and much cheaper edition: The Jazz Life Thanks Brownie. The price seems to be right on that one - I think I'll go for it.
  22. Me too. . ditto x 2 More sad news. Always really liked his arrangements for Basie, especially. RIP. Hefti Obituary
  23. What's this release, not heard of this , any other details or titles ??? I see that the Music Matters Soul Station is already OOP, along with quite a few other titles. That went quick !
