  1. Mal Waldron 'One And Two' (Prestige 24000 series 2LP reissue of 'Mal-1' and 'Mal-2')
  2. Eric The Half-A-Bee Mr Say-No-More Brave Sir Robin
  3. Not really - 'less pastoral' would be my description. Side 1 has quite a formal feel to it, with the extra instruments providing something of an orchestral backdrop at times. Side 2 of the LP seems to me quite distinct from side 1 though ('Mtume' etc), with a sound that is sort of reminiscent of the 'Now' session but without the voices. Almost Strata-Eastish. Really though, the LP has a quite distinct - and darker (I think) - sound to any of the other Hutch albums. Not sure if that helps?
  4. Ross Macdonald Raymond Chandler The Little Sister Sister Sledge Percy Sledge Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
  5. One of the greatest bands ever - for sure. Especially with the Cowell/Johnson/Chambers section. The Antibes live recordings are great - reminder to self to dig them out now.
  6. Yep - see here, under 'forthcoming'. By UK author/critic Derek Ansell. No idea of what it will look like/likely content though.. Ian Carr's 'Music Outside' has been mentioned in another thread but another plug from me here - for anyone with an interest in Brit Jazz (all 3 of us ) its an essential purchase ! Hank Book
  7. similar thing here, have been wondering for three years whether my saxophone needs a repair or whether i just "forgot how to play"... will try to change that next year In fact, the 'bone (Yamaha) is sat in its stand upstairs and just waiting for me to 'parp' through it again. Last time, I managed about an octave ! :rsmile: The trouble is, every time I work up the enthusiasm I put on the JJ Johnson Mosaic, then give up..
  8. I enjoyed the previous Lee biography - didn't have a problem with the race relations angle as I believe it originated from some academic work (I think ) - but the more Lee biographies the better. Count me in ! With the forthcoming (2008) UK Hank Mobley biography and the reprint of Ian Carr's 'Music Outside', tis a great time for jazz in print.
  9. Less money spent on Xmas throwaways = More money for CDs and vinyl
  10. Based on my recent experience with Royal Mail, I wouldn't hold your breath !
  11. 'The Jazz Messengers' (Dutch Philips mono, 'Epic' sleeve art). With Mobley, Silver etc. What a GREAT session. Doesn't get the plaudits it deserves !
  12. It's totally unlike any of the other Hutcherson Blue Notes of the period - quite adventurous and free-form, particularly the 'suite' on side 1. The vibe sort of reminds me of Shorter's 'Super Nova', also of 'Total Eclipse' in the quieter moments (although it's a more 'out' album than Eclipse). A very serious 'feel' to this album, unlike the more relaxed grooves from the slightly later material put out on the Mosaic. Some very good Harold Land too - no suprise there.
  13. Pick up the trombone and/or flugel again ! :rsly:
  14. Wow. And that Dorham isn't even near-mint vinyl.
  15. Lauren Sevian Saw her burning through 'Moanin' with the Mingus Big Band at Bath last Summer. Could have lifted paint - Pepper would have been proud !
  16. Hopefully with that annoying shrill-ness taken out of the sound? Looking forward to those 3 bonus tracks on the 'Head On'. But it was only earlier copies of The Soothsayer that were affected, right? This was discussed many years ago, probably on the old BNBB. I know my copy doesn't have any sound problems. Not only "discussed" on the old BNBB, but it was our discovery of that tape distortion caused Blue Note to pull the master tape back out and re-do the CD to fix that nastiness. It was too bad that they never pulled the original mucked up discs. I bet I bought 3 copies of it before I got one that was "fixed". That was back in the days when the BN board was doing its thing to help BN succeed. Thanks - yep, I vaguelly remember the discussion of this, back in the say. I must say that I think the sound on the old 'Rainbow' series LP was pretty shrill as well so will look forward to an upgrade.
  17. What incredible experiences to have had !
  18. Hmm. Hasn't Lonehill (or is it Gambit?) done a 'release' of this quite recently?
  19. Bobby Hutcherson 'Head On' (BN blue/black Liberty stereo)
  20. ...and from my vinyl, recorded at Poppi Recording Studio, LA. Engineer: Rick Pekkoven. Re-mix engineer - RVG. Two of the tracks composed by Todd Cochran, the rest by Hutch.
  21. Horace Silver 'Further Explorations' (BN 47W63rd mono 'Liberty')
  22. Awesome ! We are living in Turrentine-rich times indeed..
  23. Hopefully with that annoying shrill-ness taken out of the sound? Looking forward to those 3 bonus tracks on the 'Head On'.
  24. Hank Mobley 'Dippin'' (BN NY USA mono)
  25. Great - will be looking forward to this.
