  1. I have a copy of this which might match your description. It is in a heavy vinyl mono with '47W63rd' but no deep groove, RVG but no ear on the vinyl and with 'High Fidelity' on the back cover on the top left, no address on the bottom, laminated front. I think it's a very early Liberty from 1966. Sound quality is absolutely superb by the way - better than one would ever expect from the Liberty era (but some of these reissues can be very good indeed). I believe the story was that after the sale to Liberty, there was a big stock of old labels and they used them up with the 'new' non-Plastylite vinyl. Somewhere in the rack I have a (presumably original) 47W63rd deep groove mono with ear but it's currently elusive. Sorry !
  2. How about the Umbria fest?
  3. Funilly enough, one of my OOP Mosaic boxes has a old flyer from them offering for sale the Japanese 'Keynote' LP set !
  4. Hank Mobley 'Reach Out' (BN Liberty blue/white stereo)
  5. Up again with this thread. Just working my way through the Johnny Smith box. Really nice stuff - as mentioned above his style is coming out of the C&W/bluegrass origins but with a hint of the Tristano influence on the early sides and with added studio session-man sophistication as the set progresses. It's also a very, very listenable set - suprising I guess, as I would have expected multiple CDs of this material to get boring after a while.
  6. Yep. Nearing the end of an era. Now nearly depleted.
  7. Ah, so that explains it ! Shall we send a search party into your vinyl racks if you haven't posted on the O-Board beyond a certain date?
  8. More sad news. RIP - and a hugely influential figure not only in classical music but also via influence on Miles, Zappa etc. I guess this must be big headline stuff on the German news tonight, yes? Way too many musical passings this year..
  9. WOW, thank you very much for that.............. That's from a TV show that was recorded up in North-West England in the early 1980s for one of the UK channels (Granada?) and can be found 'at a certain site'.
  10. Yep, I know that equation pretty well - but from the UK side of the border ! It has to be pretty special these days to get me up to London for a gig.
  11. and with incidental music by Oliver Nelson or Lalo Schifrin..
  12. Thanks, Roger. My cheque will be in the mail to these guys this weekend. As mentioned on the AAJ board, I'm getting sick of borrowing the old beat-up copy of this one from the library. Especially as I was the first one to loan this particular copy back in 1975. Incidentally - is it a straight 'clone' of the original but with Roger Cotterel update to the preface?
  13. Do you have a fan living next door? MG It's OK - it was empty.
  14. Well, the roof's still on but the composter nearly blew over the hedge !
  15. MG - It's the 'Jazz Cafe' in Camden Town 13-14th Dec. Not my favourite venue and I probably won't be able to get into town but it sounds tempting. Their admission (standing) is usually around £20 I think.
  16. Now on deck - Johnny Smith Complete Roost, CD1
  17. I think the roof is still on. Just off to check.. Looks like a lot more of the same is 'scheduled' for tomorrow so I can see another Mosaic Day coming up. :rsmile:
  18. Columbia Small Groups, CD6. After playing this set through with re-runs of every disk (a sure sign that a particular Mosaic set is a really good one) this set is turning out to be one of my favourites of the past few years. Columbia alwayd did get a great recorded sound in that 30th St studio and this set is a great mix of the various players who came under the mainstream umbrella - from Ernie Caceres and Pee-Wee Russell at the more traditional end through to Kenny Burrell and Dave Bailey at the boppier end. All great music ! I find the two Ruby Braff CDs to be one of the best suprises in this set.
  19. 'Bout time someone else bought this. MG How is it? (maybe I shouldn't ask ) Just noticed they have a gig coming up in London later this month.
  20. No kidding, John. Thought my roof was blowing off this morning at 4am - a bit worrying to say the least.
  21. Kenny Wheeler/John Dankworth Orchestra 'Windmill Tilter' (Fontana, stereo)
  22. If you like this album, check out Quincy's 'Jazz Icons' DVD. An essential purchase !
  23. Well, I for one like it. It's really good late night listening. Commercial - yes - and lowish on the jazz content, with a reverby early 70s sound - but me likes. The cover design is also extremely cool !
  24. Just got my disk too today John. Many thanks - will give it a spin or two this weekend.
  25. Graham Collier Music 'Jazz Illustrations' (Cambridge University Press , stereo)
