  1. Same here - hope it arrives across the pond by Xmas. I’m looking forward to hearing his recollections of the gigs during that final period.
  2. Given it a spin - mono, sounds fine, not a sample. Have to say, I prefer the earlier Savoy and Verve material and the later Impulses.
  3. Good, swinging stuff.
  4. and hopefully not so full of dross.. Seriously though, looks like a nice package. I’ll have to spin my copies of this. I think the Fontana is a factory sample but will have to check. I’ve also got an early OJC and from my recollection that sounds pretty good too.
  5. My version is this one -
  6. Is the box lined in ermine?
  7. I saw him on two consecutive nights in the final London gig and can’t say that I found the tempo thing off putting. What was noticeable was a definite Slavic influence at times. On both nights, the last sets (in one case attended by only about 15 people left in the club) were sublime. The earlier sets got the chattering Gold Card business crowd and I felt Evans was a bit more prescribed, perhaps. Will never forget though Evans looking in some pain and being literally supported and carried to the piano stool by a couple of women I think - Helen Keane I think, plus his girlfriend Laurie I suspect. Sobering to see as a youngster. I would like to read this book !
  8. Oxfam find - interesting read, compiling their judgement on key recordings by the decade.
  9. Excellent singer, always a pleasure to hear Claire ‘live’.
  10. Well done John !
  11. Yeah - same font as used on Elvin’s ‘Merry Go Round’ I think. Stinks of the 1970s !
  12. Doubt that there was any influence on Duke but that is an interesting thought. Mary Lou Williams also operating in this area at that time. The ‘Anthem’ tracks are on Dutton Vocalion’s reissue of the ‘October Woman’ LP. To be honest I think the CD sounds better as unlike most old EPs, there is no snap crackle pop. Vocalion had access to the master tape I think. Good to remind myself of just how damn brilliant this one is. This was one very happy and compatible front line.
  13. Lousy font !
  14. It’s in Garrick’s ‘Liturgical’ style - influenced by English medieval/choral/church music. Totally unique. In the same vein as ‘Jazz Praises at St Pauls’. The music was reissued by Vocalion on CD on one of the Garrick releases. I think his experiments in this area even preceded Duke Ellington - the ‘Sacred Concerts’ would be a US equivalent but this is much more English. The Argo EP was produced in tiny numbers I think.
  15. More EPs. Herb & Lorraine Geller Imperial session.
  16. Rare Garrick EP with Joe Harriott and cathedral organ ! This one is most definitely a ‘find’.
  17. Sad news - but a really great legacy. RIP.
  18. This is great, not surprisingly. Half price too from Juno ! Shame there wasn’t a 4th side.
  19. Can’t go wrong with Barney on Contemporary !
