I did the same with my dad's classical vinyls, and it was a nice and moving surprise.

Yep, for big labels the concept of "dynamic range" means pump almost every frequencies up to the max. They are so pumped that they could sound even without a cd player, actually if you put the ears on the jewel case you can hear the music without playing them.

ever have a bell for a neighbor?

Dean Benedetti? edit: for some of you that didn't understand my hilarity: in italian Dean is very similar to Don, the way we call priests: Don Franco would be Father Frank. Benedetti means Blessed and is very close to italian surname Bendetto ( Bendict ) So Dean Benedetti is very similar to Father Blessed AND Father Benedict...and yes the sound quality is similar. A argute post Sidewinder, if you knew italian. Congrats. -

Over here they replaced real bells with recorded bells, they play the real bells only for big events. From what I hear from my house they didn't employed RVG or Roy DuNann as recording engineers and the amplification system is far away from the ones at Pink Floyd's or Genesis' concerts. Worst of all I suspect they use hard disk digital recording. -
I agree with you, though good intentions are not an excuse for an approximate article. Probably we should blame the journalist more then the doctor. As you said creativity, genius and mental illness are vague concept if you don't relate them to a historic and social contest. One thing that is totally lacking in the above article. And as I said no reference to the sample. There are more bipolar desorder in artists then in bus drivers, yes because if you want such driving licence you can't be bipolar. The questions that can not have answers are: Are you mental ill because you're an artist or are you an artist because you're mental ill?

Here we are. First the sample: supporting such theory implicate that at least a significative sample of other people are analized: industrial workers, farmers, blu collars, ecc, in one word a significative sample of the total population at the times of Schumann and the others, wich apparently has not be done. For obvious reasons: about Ives or Mahler we have some significative sources about their family's story, we couldn't do the same for a poor family of farmers in Tchaikovsky's Russia Second the diagnosis of "mental illness" at times were at least "bizarre" and often totally unscientific at Schumann's times, so the fact that some of his relatives were in "insane asylum" could mean nothing. These are purely statistic statements. It's not clear to wich kind of "mental illness" Ludwig is referring for: schizophrenics, psycotics, borderlines, depression or only bipolar disorder? It's pretty obvious that some kind of mental activitities, are much more stressfull then others for many reasons: for instance often the lack of social recognizions and success of artistic work can cause severe depressions and other "mental illness" to the authors. Even the "artistic" enviromental could be stressfull, look at the spread of drugs among musicians, not a good cure for anything. These thesys can be turned on: an individual that has a strong emotional and introspective mind is naturally oriented towards poetry rather then journalism, or towards an expressionist artistic movement rather then rationalist architecture. It's like saying that in the NBA there are a high rate of tall individual rather then in the horse racing. Like the above story of NBA and the horse racing. A last personal consideration: as everyone who passed through a serious psychoalitic, or psychological, therapy knows, "mental illness" is definitely a rather vague notion.

Bells? I live in the center of Rome, don't tell me about bells! -
I read the article and I think it's total BS. I am sorry that now it's too late in Italy to confutate it sentence by sentence. I'll do in the next days if you're really interested.

Talking about soundtracks as collections of songs I thinks that Natural Born Killers and Pulp Fiction are among the best, considering how they are edited for the release. Badalamenti's work for Lynch's movies is not bad either.

Basically it was a genius who thought that, after 50 years from his age, some rich audiophile nuts wouldn't like the idea of their 10K $ cartdriges droping off from the outer side of the record breaking the cantilever handmaded by Hattori Hanzo. I'm so pleased... MG ...and you're right. Hattori Hanzo's revenge for a broken cantilever is unappeasable.

Maybe I am wrong, but to me modern 'Vanity Fair' is a magazine based on sensational, though accurate and well written, interviews and stories about the Star System, occasionaly they had some investigative strong stuff. I couldn't see any 'culture' in it.
-
C'mon Brownie, you are too strict. To me "Vanity Fair" (The magazine) and "Culture" in the same sentence is an oxymoron.

Never heard about weed - no doubts that it could happen - but a friend of mine who used to work for a record company/distributor told me a story about an LP on a small Jamaican label being returned because a chocolate chip was pressed in the vinyl. Just joking, but gatefold labels were perfect for rolling joint...and jewelcase cd cover are good for cocaine's lines...one of the reason to prefer vinyl.

"Catch a Fire" and "Burnin" "Natty Dread" is nice too. (and the double live Lp "Babylon By Bus": it has his moments, plus the most famous Marley's songs, IMHO,) If you buy used vinyl doublecheck the condition: those rastafanatics used to be very stoned when they played records. German and Dutch pressings are good as usual. Avoid the latest reissues, digitally remastered with the very same boom-fest of the cd. And look for some lost weed inside the cover... What I'd suggest if you don't mind to buy digital and if you're really interested in early Marley's works is this box set: http://www.amazon.com/gp/search?index=blen...;_encoding=UTF8 The true original Marley and the Wailers before he became a Rockstar. Trenchtown taste 100%. All this Upsetters sets are generally interesting, Lee Perry was the Goodfather of the Raggae, though I fully listened to the Marley's box only. P.S. If you find an original "Catch A Fire" with original "Zippo" cover, at a decent price and in good condition, I would be interested too.
-
Agree, but why should I buy another copy of "Exodus"? Issuing a DOUBLE LIVE album of the stuff, that should be the way.
-
Stick to them. Expecially if are original UK pressings.

Freddie Hubbard BREAKING POINT NY, mono. I love the drive of the session.

"Catch A Fire" is a great album and the Deluxe double cds is pretty interesting because you have both the plain jamaican version and and the mixed/overproduced version for "white" market. "Exodus" is not one of my fave Marley's album, so I found the double cds useless. I'd prefer a double cds of "Burnin". The bass is pumped up to the extreme compared to the original vinyl, and even compared with the EP you could find in DJ's store some years ago. Overall a comprensible remastering choice for this kind of music.

I found this link on Stereophile's site: http://www.tubedepot.com/ ...and, yes, I found it crazy AND fascinating as well. Is anybody here playing with stuff like NOS or Cryogenically Treated Vacuum Tubes?
