  1. To borrow a few words from a great American, "Can't we all just get along?"
  2. I’ve seen mention here as well as other places on the web, where people state that they’re not big fans of Oscar Peterson. “He plays too many notes”, etc. Does he get a bad rap? After all, he’s performed and recorded with all the greats of Jazz, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster and many others. Norman Granz featured Oscar Peterson in his first jazz at the Philharmonic tours back in the late 40s. I don’t mind his playing. In fact I kind of like it. How about the rest of you here?
  3. I saw Ray live back in October of this year with Barry Harris. Barry said while introducing him that “Ray hasn't performed or played much in the past year due to illness. Now he’s feeling better, expect to hear a lot more of him.”
  4. Nice photo.
  5. Rice cakes taste like cardboard.
  6. I have a recording of the Jimmy Smith Trio live on the BBC 1966-01-26. I did some googling but the content is not available in my country (US). Does anyone know if Jimmy Smith appeared on the program Jazz 625? I am trying to determine if this may be that program.
  7. This is the first I've seen of this photo. I would guess it is from the 1970's.
  8. Anyone know who is playing guitar and the two drummers might be?
  9. Solo piano. A lot of the lower register on the piano. Randy's use of the left hand gives him his unique sound. It is a live recording too. I like it, but I enjoy every session Randy issued during his life.
  10. Resurrect this thread. Tiny Grimes
  11. Does anyone remember the commercial with Jon Hendricks? I remember seeing it back in the 80s. I don’t remember what product he was pitching. I want to say the commercial was for butter or margarine.
  12. Thanks.
  13. Yes, it appears to be a radio broadcast, but does anyone have this? I just came across this today. I've never new of it. https://archive.org/details/cd_tete-montoliu-chick-corea-victoria-gast_tete-montoliu-chick-corea
  14. Bill Frisell solo. Jazz Standard.
  15. I want to get the dates mentioned for the Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers week at Fat Tuesday's jazz club in NYC back in 1981. Since I don't have a subscription I cannot view the article. https://www.nytimes.com/1981/02/13/arts/new-blakey-messengers.html
  16. Yes, that was the name of the label.
  17. I just remembered Horace Silver also started his own label.
  18. Today I was in a vinyl record shop and came across an album of Mary Lou Williams on "Mary Records." This was the label she formed when no other record label was recording her. I started to wonder what other jazz musicians started their own labels. Another that comes to mind is Willie Jones III. He has his own label. Are there any others?
  19. I just watched a Nova show on Leonardo Da Vinci. The problem with the Mona Lisa and why some are not impressed, it has 500 plus years of grime on it. The colors are all lost. Those in charge of the Louvre are afraid of attempting to clean it. Da Vinci made his own paints, completely different than any other artists of that time. So they don’t want to risk losing it. Through the use of a computer program, scientists were able to re-create what the painting looked like 500 years ago. It was so vibrant in color, unlike the way it looks now. So much is not visible. There is an entire garden in the lower quarter of the painting. Today that’s not visible. The program did mentioned that tourism and all the flashing cameras and cell phone is adding to the painting demise.
  20. wow. I will have to check this place out.
  21. George Cables’ trio at Mezzrow in NYC.
