Anyone found details on the box? I'm interested, but I'd like to know something about it before I order.

Randy Weston + Billly Harper @ the Jazz Standard (NYC)
J Larsen replied to Guy Berger's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I would, but I only found out about this show after buying tix for An Alien Heat. Oh well... Have fun. I have somehow managed to miss every Randy Weston performance in the city for the past 8 years. -
Thanks for starting this thread. I'm going to buy a CD version of this this weekend. My record sounds like a bowl of rice crispies.

I was never able to listen to this band because the singer's voice bugged the hell out of me. I remember "superman" being one of my least favorite alt rock songs back in the day. An old friend of mine got himself kicked out of a Catholic boarding school by blasting Dear God in his room one Sunday morning. He was, needless to say, pretty happy about that.

Too bad I missed the Randy Weston and Don Friedman shows. There was no way to get out of work.

I don't get TV reception, as I am opposed to the idea of paying for a service that is 99% crap. I rely on the radio for news and buy the DVDs of the shows I want to watch. So far I have: Twin Peaks Seasons 1&2 (2 is on pre-order) Six Feet Under Complete Series Sopranos Seasons 1 - 6p1 Deadwood Season 1 Danger Man - Complete 30 minute episodes Danger Man - Complete 1 hr episodes CYE - Seasons 1-5 Prisoner - Complete Series (far inferior to Danger Man but has its moments) South Park Seasons 1-9 Complete Mr. Bean Complete Office (UK) SNL Season 1 (I sort of regret this one) Muppets Season 1 Twilight Zone Season 1 I think the next big purchase will be the complete Inspector Morse, but it's really hard to find a good deal on that one.

This is a really good one, but my favorite Mayfield record is Sweet Exorcist. Curtis/Live is really good too.

Do you behave as well as this guy

$100 says someone made it up, but it's still funny! -
1986 World Series Game Six Re-enacted in RBI Baseball

I'd bet they hacked the game (the player of the game slide is a big tip-off). There are a lot of hacked versions of these old games floating around. Still clever, though. -
Is fusura still around in some incarnation? The big auto insurers used to have a centralized quote system on line so that you could compare rates without having to go from insurer to insurer.

I never knew that about Lyle Preslar - that's some heavy irony.

AIG has made an offer to acquire the remaining shares in 21st Century that they don't already own. If it goes through, this would quite likely impact the quality of service at TW.

Dementia a problem among former pro football stars
J Larsen replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
This isn't necessarily relevant to the conversation at hand, but as a matter of curiosity if nothing else, one of the world's most in-demand and expensive economic consultants is a former NFL All-Pro offensive lineman. His name is Blaine Nye. I've been involved in a couple projects that he worked on. -
Anyone use this stuff? I'm going to give it a try. I'm impressed that they make zoological formulas in addition to pet food. http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/

Tell me about it.

I don't really follow media companies, but I thought their merger was struck down on antitrust grounds. Are they still in play?
-
It actually is, but it is buried in the text. Do a word search. I missed it too and fed my cat Iams last night. My friend cooks for his dogs. His ex-wife has a business designing nutritional programs for various breeds of dogs and exotic cats.

So perhaps you meant "accounting" rather than actuarial. BTW, if EMI is indeed in "deep shit," the market hasn't picked up on it. Their stock has been lackluster but not horrible over the past year.
-
I didn't see Iams on the list the first time I read the article! So what can I feed my cat now, besides dry food? Up until recently, I only fed my cat dry food, but the vet told me to start feeding him wet food as well (to promote better long-term kidney health, ironically enough).

Supposedly Zito is a pretty decent guitar player. I think he has gigged a little bit.
-
That's rather worrying... EMI is in deepshit, no? Robbie Williams didn't turn out to be gold-shitting donkey they were hoping for and besides him they don't have any good horses in their stable... I dunno. Maybe it isn't an issue. It may be no more than an actuarial matter, that would remain unaffected even if EMI get taken over. I should think the business is worth very little in comparison to EMI as a whole. Actuarial? Not nitpicking, just never seen the word used this way before. If EMI were to get in trouble, it would likely have little to no effect on Mosaic. I've been involved in several situations where a big corporate parent was in trouble but its smaller subsidiaries were doing fine. Mosaic would be particularly insulated by virtue of the fact that EMI is not a majority stakeholder. The most dramatic thing that could happen would be EMI selling off its interest, but if they really got in trouble I doubt that even this would occur, as they would have more important things to deal with.

Thanks for posting this. I use (make that used to use) Nutro. If my cat had been killed by the stuff, I may have gone Scarface on someone.

The show was pretty much as expected. Jimmy was solid, Albert was fine, his (Jeb Patton) pianist is pretty good, and the bass player (Peter Washington) was fine. Perfectly acceptable way to spend a weekend evening.

Bloggers' view of baseball
J Larsen replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
To slightly expand on what has been said above, baseball is basically a series of individual accomplishments. It is this feature that makes it amenable to statistical analysis. In a game like, say, basketball or rugby, it is enormously difficult (some would say impossible) to put statistical weight on how much each individual player contributed to a particular success or failureof his team. In baseball, it's so obvioius how to do it that it practically begs to be done. As far as how the teams view the statistical approach, it varies widely by team. For instance, Oakland and Boston have in-house statisticians. On the other hand, the general manager of the San Francisco team openly ridicules the approach - beyond batting average (basic measure of batsmanship) and ERA (crude measure of pitching ability) he claims it is a bunch of garbage.
